Homeowner cutting trees on the Homestead - PLUS - family time in the forest

Working on several projects today on the homestead. Trying out my new Husqvarna chainsaw pants cutting some trees around the property. Also working fixing the tire on the John Deere 755 compact utility tractor. Once we get the tire repaired we took the 755 and ran the pulverizer implement on the road project trying to pack in some ruts. We also took the drone out to fly a southbound barge on the ohio river and then we finish it all off with some wonderful family time out in the hoosier national forest exploring some local waterfalls!

Do you see the value of a gas powered compressor mounted in the back of the truck now? A good thing to do when looking to improve the value of the land is to look into picking up some ginseng seeds to plant in the fall along with looking into changing the mixture of trees over the next 10-20 years. Ginseng has a 5-10 year maturing time so in a few years you can start moving around and harvest as it becomes ready for a cash crop to grow with the trees. A nursery for trees up near the house where you can keep saplings watered till they get to 5 gallon pot/bucket sized will let you plant a mix of higher value trees you can transplant into the woods as you clean them up/thin them so you can change the makeup of the forest without ever leaving a bare area.

Good progress on road, ever use a 3 point landscape rake? i have used a back blade for many years, however after I got a rake couple years ago now it is my favorite tool. The farm I bought in 2010 needed a lot of cleanup. I leave The brush piles for the small critters. I also established an area about an acre where I just left it as is. No one including me is allowed to enter, ever. It is a sanctuary for the larger animals. I now have a nice heard of deer and large flock of turkeys.

Cap’n... about those chaps. They are great for cutting wood in briar patches... so, I thought, they’d also be good for rabbit hunting in briar patches. Cold morning (10f), 4” of new fallen snow and 40acres of the thickest blackberry, cat brier and raspberry brambles you’ll ever see we’re calling me to hunt. So, the beagle and I got out just after sun up. Normally I would have worn my insulated coveralls... but, nope... I had chaps to protect my legs. I brought along my .22 because I knew the bunnies would be sitting tight. About half an hour in, the beagle flushes the first one. It turned left, the dog went straight. So, I followed the tracks deep into the briars, proud of the fact that the chaps made me immune to brambles. About 20ft in, the cottontail sits. I step over a fierce cat briar and into a raspberry bush. As I pull up to shoot, the beagle jumps a rabbit. I shoot as the dog chases the other rabbit around behind me. You know Cap’n, I’d never shot two rabbits within a minute... and I’d never hit one on the run with my .22.... but for some reason, I thought I could. So, disregarding my surroundings I wheeled around to shoot. Well sir, when I did, that cat brier grabbed ahold of the back of my calves like a shark grabs a seal. My torso kept turning with the momentum of my .22 rifle and arms. But, my legs didn’t. Fortunately, the snow broke my fall... unfortunately the face full of briars and the thousand needles in the back of my legs did not allow me to appreciate that fact. I learned three things that day: 1. I’ve never taken two rabbits within a minute. 2. I’ve never killed a bunny on the run using a .22. 3. Chaps only work one way... forward. So my advice to you Cap’n is... don’t put them on backwards.

Recent to your channel, loving the video's. Do you have to get any kind of special permission to film the barges.

70mmbobbyj hey welcome to the channel and glad you’re tagging along with us! I just try to be as respectful as possible with the barge traffic and not put my drone anywhere that could damage any of their equipment or be in their way

There is a video called the "World's Best Tree Feeling Tutorial". It is about 45 minutes long but after watching it for what seems like 15 to 20 minutes it ends and you go what?

@@CaptainKleeman Just the opposite. Meant it covered at least 6 very informative ways on how to fell 140 or taller trees. One leaned severely back. Two wanted to fall in the direction of a nearby house. They covered such subjects such as how to properly do a plunge cut.

awd3264 FYI- Terry Hale is a master at timber management. He has videos on the mechanical science of felling trees. I’ve dropped tens of thousand trees and after watching his videos changed several things I was doing wrong.
