Homeowner faces criminal charges after 16-year-old Ralph Yarl shooting

The Kansas City homeowner who shot 16-year-old Ralph Yarl was charged with two felony counts, prosecutors say. Yarl’s family says he was shot twice for ringing the wrong doorbell when trying to pick up his brothers. NBC News’ Maggie Vespa has more details on the growing outrage.

the simple truth is not opening the door at night to a stranger is the best policy. He wouldn't have needed any help in the first place if the shooter adhered to it. By all means, call an ambulance but if I hear gunshots on my block and then a knock on the door, I am not opening it.

The way they worded about the guy that helped him was weird. He actually went to Ralph who was in the street shouting for help at that time and told him to lie down because he didn’t want him to move and make the injuries worse. He talked with him and stayed with him while waiting for an ambulance. They had him on a radio show today. He sounded absolutely heart broken over what he witnessed. It’s beyond awful what happened to this young man and I just pray for his physical and mental recovery from this traumatic event in his life.

I heard the prosecutor say twice that there was a racial component but they refused to pursue hate crime charges just because it would have been less time in prison. Really? This man is going to die in prison regardless but you'd rather get a longer sentence instead of labeling him permanently as a racist? That's just baffling. Clearly you didn't have any proof of this being a hate crime.

Prosecutors often strategize, picking charges and dropping others for a number of possible reasons: for you to assume they passed on the hate crime charge because they lack evidence illuminates the working of your own mind and little else. I've never seen a case where prosecutors publicly stated there's a racial component to a crime, when in fact there wasn't. The prosecutor didn't stutter, and he didn't say 'maybe'. You have to be pretty twisted to think they have some sort of motive to lie about this.

Sorry, you shoot an unarmed, wounded, kid lying prone on the ground, that is attempted first degree murder. You thought you killed him, you confirmed he was no threat to you, and defenseless, so you decided to shoot him again to make sure he was dead, that is premeditated murder.

This is tragic. I guess the 85 year old shooter could be a racist with dementia, but he fired at someone simply for being on his porch and then fired a second shot when he was down. The rest of his life needs to be in prison. And if his defense lawyers argue that he had diminished capacity due to dementia, they're making the case that people's competency needs to be regularly tested for gun ownership, the same way it is for driver's licenses (which is basic common sense, unless you're the NRA).

What’s saddest to me about this, besides him being shot INSTANTLY for simply ringing the wrong doorbell, is the fact that the ONLY person who wanted to help him first required that he lift his hands and lay on the ground before he opened the doggone door.
