Want to see what worked and what didn't for our Ocean Main lesson block? I'll share the resources we used, the projects we did and even show you the main lesson book my son completed.
This unit was scheduled for 4 weeks, but it took nearly 7 weeks to complete. In large part it was because I was writing the curriculum as I went. I would research the topic we planned to study, then wrote out two pages of text as well as opening activities and projects as well as listed out the resources materials used for each lesson. That curriculum will be available soon!

Beautiful! We made a similar octopus with yarn and a styrofoam ball years ago. I even used the large google eyes lol I probably would not do it again this way but rather the Waldorf way due to trying to Earth conscious regarding pollution. And I agree that the library is an excellent source! There is also inner library loan and if you want the librarian to order books, sometimes they will. I was a Children's librarian for a few years, and would do this at times. I really miss it too! Blessings!

The octopus was really fun to do and I especially like the way it turned out since I didn't know what I was doing, just working with it as I went. I remember when I was in first grade at my Waldorf school and our first knitting projects were just to knit a square or rectangle. Then the teacher helped us form it into something and stuff it. I made a cat. I need to share that in a video, but the point it, it's very exciting turning a square into something three dimensional buy squeezing here and stuffing there. I feel it's similar to drawing from the inside out. Also, my mom came to visit yesterday with my sister and my mom pulled out the octopus she made when she was with us, and then another one! She's been busy knitting another one, and then my sister wanted to make one! Well, I've rambled on...Libraries are awesome! I just get frustrated with late fees!!!

Hi Hannah. How do you decide what to include and what not to include? I’m currently putting together an ocean unit and there is just way too much, I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed. Which fish do I include? Should I do a section in coastlines? Etc etc!! I’d love to know how you decided what to leave out? Thanks!

There is also a huge pile of plastic in the Pacific Ocean right now. I can't remember what it is called. When I think of sea life and education, I feel this topic should be covered too. I forgot to mention this earlier! It is a tragedy beyond words.

Yes, the great trash pile...as large as Texas if I remember. I have to fact check that. So we didn't cover that nor polar ice melt. I did so intentionally and would love to share my reasons for that. I think it's necessary to discuss solutions and practical steps that even children can take to care for their environment. For us currently, it's as simple as taking our own bags, picking up trash, composting and being diligent about recycling. I'm trying to create small habits that hopefully become second nature to the kids without resentment. Side point...it's a huge pet peeve of mine when I find recyclables in the trash!

It probably won't make a lot of difference, but I'm going to stop buying plastic water bottles. Even though we have recycling bins, we still have the moral and ethical level of each person not being the same. So this creates a problem when that person or people get on a boat with plastic. It would be great to establish some laws with the waters regarding boat trip ( small and large) with the use of plastic. But my goodness... what an undertaking this would be. The only answer is education from the start. Japan does this. I wish we would too.

The pollution of the oceans is not only caused by plastic waste but also by microplastics. Also 80% of the pollution is caused by industries and people on land... only 20% by fisheries and off-shore industry. If you want to learn more about this look up the plastic soup foundation. You'll find info on how to reduce your plastic footprint aswell. I think every person can make a difference since it is every single person/family that is contributing to it.

Where is the video for the penguin feltie? also, where do you get your felt? I checked hobby lobby & either i was looking in the wrong area of they don't have it. I love how everything you use/do is so hands on & naturey.

For the Natural Earth and Science Cards, maybe next time what you could do is take the information and create a vocal mythology tale around that. A cloud is such and such" and take that information and retell how it could have come about? Bringing in the mythology aspect of it all. Does that make sense?

Do your kids grab some of the books on the unit you are studying on their own time? Just curious when you say you did not get to a book if they look at them on their own.

Good question Danielle. So in general, no, my kids won't just pick up a non-fiction book related to our unit and read it. There are exceptions though. If it's a fiction book related to the unit, then yes, my son will pick up the books, seek them out and read them. If they are non-fiction, he may do so, but mostly no. If I hand him a stack of books and ask him to read them, he will with no problem.

Hi, I am thinking of homeschooling next year my 10yr old twins. It's so overwhelming so I am really enjoying your channel. I am hunting for a curriculum that fits our family. Have u heard or used the good and the beautiful curriculum? It's new and I like that's it's Charlotte Mason inspired.

I would love to know how you started instructing your children to use art supplies to create beautiful things. I know art is subjective, but my kids (8,7,4,2) generally make messes instead of trying to draw any type of form. Any advice appreciated!

Crystal Jordan 1-5 years old should be doing process art. That’s where they are developmentally. Which means it’s more fun for them to explore and make marks, messes, feel things etc than make a finished product. So they’re doing the right thing!

It's kind of a mix of me, the curriculum suggestions and the kids. We cover about 5-6 topics a year.

You always find such beautiful books! My most recent Thrifbooks order is based on some of your history book hauls. I can't wait! Have you looked at Laws Guide to Nature Drawing and Journaling? It looks amazing and I'm very tempted to order it.
