Here's a real homeschool day-in-the-life (well, the school part at least) for my 10th grader.

I always love when people ask me how long we do school. It really depends. Sometimes we get into a great conversation about something and may take twice as long as normal. Sometimes art projects take a while to finish. Sometimes we just need to spend more time on something. Sometimes we fly through everything and get done really quickly. That is the beauty of homeschooling. We generally start around 9 and finish around 1 (Sometimes 2 if we have tests) with a K5 and 7th grader. I have been preparing the 7th grader to probably expect longer days when he starts the high-school level. He is already taking high-school level math and science this year, so he gets it.

I have Elementary age children currently but like you said most homeschool youtubers do too which is great for right now for me but I am so excited to see that you and a couple other mommas are coming on with some middle school and high school videos to help those that are there now and those of us who will be there before we know it. Thank you so much! I am sure I will be visiting these videos again in the future!!

It's so nice to see how another homeschooler's day looks, I have one in elementary, one middle schooler and one high schooler. We also start late around 10/10:30 and finish by 2pm. We're also using Generations 😊

Thanks for sharing! Love your channel!! This looks like an awesome and realistic college-prep school day! What are your high schooler's main peer/friend/social opportunities?

We start at 9:00 and we are finished around 2ish. If my student has a paper or project it may be a little longer. On average it’s about a 5 hour day.

Can you do a video sometime on how he will graduate. Diploma? Transcripts? Anything like that. I have time mine are still elementary- but time is pressing on. Thanks so much!!

We start at 830 or 9 and are done by 2 maybe 3 on longer days.

In my state the required time is the same for all grade levels. It's a bit ridiculous. There's no way my 7 year old needs the same amount of time as a high schooler. We make up the time with additional reading but it's still silly to say a 1st grade logs the same time as a 10th grader.

I have a more relaxed, Charlotte Mason style. My two oldest, 8th and 10th take band at the local high school first thing in the morning at 8:30. My oldest then has an additional commercial arts class so he isn't home till 10:45. We start our basket time at 11. That takes about an hour. Then we have lunch followed by group subjects (history, science, and latin). Group subjects take about an hour. We finish with independent work, math and language arts. My 10th grader is usually finished by 3 or 4 depending on how long his math takes him. Math is his biggest struggle. It can take an hour to do 5 problems. Not counting the public school electives, his school time is about 3 to 4 hours.

My husband and I meant in marching band so you can imagine how important music is to our family. This has been one of the biggest “downfalls” to homeschooling is not having the music ensemble classes and no option for marching band. I have two questions for you, how did you learn about the option for your children to participate in your local public school classes AND secondly, how has that experience been? I would be concerned about the type of influence both from students and teachers especially with how things have changed since I was in school. Band was an amazing experience for me and kept me out of trouble. I was on a bad path prior and didn’t learn about Jesus until summer before senior year. Have your kids been accepted and treated kindly since they are homeschooled and coming into the group?

@@judabrisfam7604 In my state, WA, any school aged student has the right to attend any public school classes. My kids attended public school a few years ago, so they were already familiar with the school environment prior to attending. Some kids are great, others are not.

Does your 10th grader work through those materials by a schedule or syllabi that you have set up for him?
@stephanieroy79
@stephanieroy79 Год назад
What planner do you use? Do you create the schedule you showed in the video?
@mandy-maltz
@mandy-maltz Год назад
I use the Mardel Simple Plan planner :) We're not on a set schedule, it's more like a routine. I don't dictate what he does when, he figured that out on his own. I let him have control over what subjects he does when, just as long as they get done during the day.

How long does teaching textbooks take

Do you think teaching textbooks it’s good? My son has moved beyond my abilities so I was planning on purchasing BJU for math and English too

It's worked beautifully for us. I wouldn't use anything else for math and don't plan on changing. We'll use them until the kids graduate.

With teaching textbooks how do you manage it?
@mandy-maltz
@mandy-maltz Год назад
I just let the kids do it on their own, independently. It requires nothing from me as a parent at all.

I have a 15yo that I'm trying to figure out how to homeschool here in Texas. I have no idea where to start, what to do ect. I know he struggles with how to write a paragraph. I need any guidance on how to figure out where to start and what he knows. Any ideas and tips will be so appreciated from a scressed out mom😢

I would start with IEW and download the grammar and Structure and Style to see how he likes it. My boys were really struggling in writing until we went with this company. They offer a month free through my website to help homeschool moms. You can download it here for free: iew.com/MandyMaltz-welcome

We start at 9 or 9:30 and usually finish by 2-3:00. My kids, however, want to take so many breaks! Is your son self-motivated to keep things moving along or do you have any tips? Enjoyed your video, as always.
@mandy-maltz

My oldest was like that when he was younger. He finally figured out that he finishes quicker when he stops taking breaks. That was enough motivation for him 🤣

We don’t start school til at least 9:30…. We’ve always been that way… it takes my 9th grader as long or as short as he decides to work that day 😂 Usually 4 Hours…. My middle schooler usually 3 hours.
