Is French in Canada 🇨🇦 much different from 🇫🇷 France? The curriculum might be for France, not Canada ❤

@JuanMoreno-wo5yb you know how there are different dilects and slang in Spanish... and even Portuguese and other languages... I believe there are some differences... but I don't think major ones... if someone from Quebec goes to France, they can understand each other.I believe this is perfect for French here in Canada, especially because it's the beginning stages and conversational. There's definitely a different accent... but let's be real I have a foreign accent of my own learning French 😅😂 so I do think the curriculum so far is perfect!

@@JuanMoreno-wo5yb Hi there - I hope you don’t mind me chiming in! I am in northern New Hampshire, and my family left France in the 1600’s, settled in Quebec, and in the 1920’s came down to the US... my father’s first language was French (Canadian), and my whole family was bilingual until my generation 😬. ALL that to say - 🇨🇦 French and 🇫🇷 French have the same foundation - but are very different. I learned 🇫🇷French in school, and my 🇨🇦French family had to put a little work into deciphering it🤣. My husband is just about fluent in 🇫🇷French... and struggles with the 🇨🇦French my grandparents spoke.

Hi Katie! Thanks for sharing! We live in a town close to Quebec and since we are still in the beginning stages (conversational) it's been OK! We go to the French town to practice a bit 🤣 but it's so basic right now... do you find the dialogue, accent, the way things are pronounced different? I haven't noticed anything huge from visiting our neighbors yet but maybe it's because I am not fluent in it yet! I would love for you to take a look at the free pdf and let me know what you think!

@@lifewithginab accent wise it's like US northeast vs US midwest - it doesn't seem to interfere, but it's different. Dialogue-wise I'm not sure. I know my grandparents, aunts, and uncles said it was just different. They were the ones who were so fluent they would switch between French and English seemingly without even knowing they did it!. I'm new to your channel - did you just move to Canada? Or just to a French-speaking Provence or city?

We've been using the Spanish curriculum and really like it. It's so appropriate for young learners- which is hard to find with foreign language (although becoming more common). We usually split each lesson into 2 half-hour lessons. My daughter always wants to watch and sing the songs several times, and there are so many activities that involve getting up and moving and games and such which is great, but hard to get my little to move on from - she thinks we're just having fun! So anyway, most of the time the lessons end up being done over two sessions. I hope you guys really enjoy it. I took French in high school for some reason that seemed good at the time. It's a beautiful language but not particularly useful in Texas.

I just bought the Spanish Level 1 version used last week. I will be using it with my 5 year old son. We are so excited to start. We have several Spanish speaking moms at our co-op so it will be perfect for us.

This is right on time!! We started taking Capoeira classes as a family and trying to learn portugués but was having a hard time finding Brazilian portugués language learning resources for kids. I will definitely check this out and I’d love to see you do a lesson with your kids. Thanks!

Due to the cost I purchased Song School Spanish for this upcoming school year, but I'll be anxious to see what you guys think of Homeschool Languages so maybe we'll get it in the future!

Oh I love how this one looks! I definitely want to introduce a 2nd language. We live in the southwest US right now so obviously I’m leaning towards Spanish. But I took some German in school and have German heritage so I’m tempted to lean that way even though it’s less “practical”

That is so great!! I would love to teach my kids Spanish, too... even though it's not Canada's 2nd language... it's very close to Portuguese, and my husband actually speaks Spanish pretty well, too! I actually have an aunt who lives in Germany... I love that they offer German too!

This looks so amazing! Like you I learned French in school, but have not really used it since. Also, interested in the Spanish as well as I think my little ones would benefit more from Spanish. So excited to see something like this opposed to strictly online language.

Yes! And I feel like I could actually teach and learn a long side, my kids! The Spanish looks really great! It's awesome that they offer some lessons for free as a pdf so you can always take a look and see if it's a good fit!

We just use high school textbooks. It's been fun for our kids. They're 4-7 years old. We're doing Spanish 1 this year. Next year, we will do Spanish 2.

We have been loving it... it's very beginner friendly ... like the basics but that's what we need because we don't know much! Kids are actually learning a lot and it's sticking! Super easy to use too! I would go on their website and check out the free sample lessons :)

My father was born in Faial Azore. He spoke Portuguese but we never learned 😞.. I'd love to learn it and learn with my daughter.

We speak Portuguese and my kids understand it especially my oldest he can even speak it... but I admit I have a hard time just introducing it into our day to day... I'm thinking of getting the Portuguese homeschool languages too!

@@lifewithginab my father probably assumed he had no reason to speak it, other than talking to his parents. Is Brazilian Portuguese similar to European?

@lisadixonwild yes just a different accent... my dad is actually from Portugal and my mom is Brazilian... my parents spoke Portuguese to us but we picked up on the Brazilian accent because of my mom... my husband's grandma is Portuguese and from Portugal and speaks to the kids in Portuguese (from portugal) every week when she calls. It's like English having different accents. We can understand someone speaking English from Britain :) same thing with Portuguese and the different accents and dilects.

Also to add: I noticed that your father is from Azores ... they have a very different dilect... I understand it but I know it's hard for some to understand!

@@lifewithginab I've noticed that. There are a lot of Portuguese people where I live and how they speak sounds different from how my family spoke. They actually moved to Canada first then came down here to Massachusetts. The volcano that erupted in the 50s made them migrate.

I have an incoming 3rd grader. I’m still unsure about curriculum. It’s our first year homeschooling and I have an incoming 2nd grader who is still learning to read more fluently and more comfortably and I’m unsure what to get for her as well

I would stick with language arts and math for now... and nailing those 2 down. Have you checked out the good and the beautiful? That's the curriculum I use and we really like it! They have a placement test on their website as well :)

I thought about getting the Portuguese one, but we already speak it, and it would be too easy for Nicholas the level 1. And I surprisingly always did well in French... so we will see how this goes 😅

Yes they have different resources, languages and different levels... I am not sure if they came out with level 2 yet of French... but if they didn't they will be coming with it very soon

So far so good! Our whole family had been enjoying it... level 1 is very conversational day to day things. So it's been a fun way to add language into our homeschool

I haven't picked up the workbooks or mini units yet (they have several themed units, too)... they are coming out with level 2 in the Fall i believe :)

I moved to the U.S when I was 12. I was so good with my first about speaking in French. Infact she spoke French before English. But... Then my other two came along and I just haven't been good about just talking to them in French. They know body parts in french,that's about it. And my eldest still understands but doesn't really speak it anymore... All my fault. I wonder if something like this would help me bring it back in the house by keeping me accountable and making it fun for the kids at the same time...?

Yes, definitely! I can relate to this... because we speak Portuguese.. my oldest actually is conversational, and he understands 100% and my 2 youngest... they have a harder time, and it's my fault too... but I do try to speak Portuguese as much as I can. But I feel like I forget. If I feel in a couple of years, it still becomes difficult. I might get the Portuguese course too ... to make it more fun for my little ones... but it would be too easy for my oldest. I think this program might be a great one! I'll keep you all updated as we do it in our home!

Hi!!! Sorry this was an older video. They used to ship to Canada but delivery services have been losing boxes and its been kind of a mess :( so they haven't been shipping to Canada any more and only offer the pdf version. I got it before they stopped shipping to Canada. If they offer the physical box in the future for Canada I will let everyone know!

@jessiemousseau3132 I think the manupalatives add so much but if you buy the pdf they give you everything you need to make your own... they have a free trial of the first few lessons online you can take a look at :)

Hi Gina! Thank you so much for this video. I am interested in teaching my children Portuguese as I am 50% Portuguese as well. What would you say the pronunciation of Portuguese is, as far as the country they use pronunciation from? Is it more like mainland Portugal, Azorean, or Brazilian Portuguese? Thank you!

It's only available as a PDF version for Canada :( I bought it last year... when they shipped the physical box to Canada... I actually wish I bought the Portuguese one too! I'm thinking of getting a US postal code... because it happens a lot where certain things aren't available in Canada :( I asked and they said the shipping costs were way too high to send to Canada so it wasn't worth it. They do offer the PDF version though. I know it's not the same but it's an option!
