I feel like a lot of RU-vid videos that try to explain why they homeschool are always walking on egg shells and not wanting to say anything negative about public school When in reality a lot of times that is what drives people to homeschool, the trauma they themselves endured as childrenOr the hardships their children have gone through. Thank you for keeping it real. It’s a disservice to try to sugarcoat public schools in an effort to not step on toes.Especially for us new homeschool moms or Moms that are thinking about Homeschooling and maybe Questioning whether they are overreacting to some of the Bad feelings they had about public school, like I once did. This is a comment for not only this video but the one where you describe why you homeschool. Anyway thanks. I didn’t mean to make it this long, lol!

Thoroughly enjoyed this. My hubby's first reaction to the idea of homeschooling was why bother when there is a good school just down the road? But he was willing to give it a trial. The first year I was too scared to say anything to him when I was finding things tough, thinking he would then say put her in school. But he had already seen the benefits she was getting and how well she was doing. Now when we review each year it is him saying why would we want to send her to school? Its great when she goes on the farm with him and learn about animals and help him with his jobs. They build a good relationship and she learns practical skills, and I get a break.
My husband teaches the outdoor life skills like farming, building, and fixing things.I teach the indoor life skills like baking and cleaning, along with basic academics. He wasn't always on board with homeschooling but after certain laws and other things started happening in our small "good" schools that didn't go along with our beliefs and morals, he was totally on board.
I had quite the gamut of educational experiences, private schools, public schools, homeschooling. Even in college, I went to a private university, a community college, a public university, and two online colleges. By husband only went to public schools, even in college, and then joined the military. So my husband was against homeschooling, but he was willing to keep the idea on the back burner for consideration. We ended up sending our kids to public school with the agreement that as long as the experience was predominantly positive over negative, we would continue. Everything went well until our oldest started middle school, and our youngest was diagnosed with ASD. Our oldest was picking up some really negative habits, attitudes, and ideologies, and we knew our youngest wouldn't be able to function adequately in a mainstream public middle school environment, without being exploited. We decided to let them stay in one more year, so our youngest could finish elementary school, and we could do more research and possibly sell our house. All I needed to have the confidence to homeschool was the feeling that my husband was behind me 100%. We have a little over two weeks until we finish our first year of homeschooling, and it has been fantastic!
Is your husband Filipino? I’m Filipina and I’ve been homeschooling for 3 years now... and my family still asks about when the kids will start ‘regular’ school. They’re nice about it but are still skeptical that we’re serious about following through. For many Asians homeschooling may be a difficult thing to fathom. How has your husband’s family dealt with the two of you choosing to homeschool?
I took my then 9 year old out of school last year after a string of events that put it all over the edge. Things had been building up since pre-k and my ex didn't want me homeschooling her so my hands were tied. Then she got beat up by a 14 year old boy (school resource officers son at that) who had been picking on her since kindergarten, her teacher scratched her, the bus driver dropped her off in the wrong part of town and then Parkland school shooting happened followed by another school shooting that same week. It was just a doozy of a week. I also hated her principal who was very condescending and would always tell me what I needed to do with Emma, what time she needed to be in bed and chastising me for keeping her home sick and for visiting Maine when my Poppa was dying. I felt like my kid wasn't my own kid. Like I was borrowing her from this evil woman who only saw my child as a paycheck. I finally got the balls to tell my ex this is what we are doing, you've never been a part of our lives if you don't like it take me to court and she's been home since. Its been a great thing. Daddy is home during the day during the winter and early spring and she isn't missing him by getting out of school an hour after he has to go back to work. Often times he will even come home super early after he drops off the big rig to pick her up and take her to deliver the smaller stuff in the car. She gets so much more "Daddy time" which has brought back the kid I had before I put her into public schooling. She was always a quick witted, silly child and in school she was never happy, always mopey and angry. Shed throw a fit and then fall asleep doing homework and have to be carried to bed. I always find myself apologizing to her for putting her through the public school experience. My husband was a U.S. Marine and a diver so he teaches her a lot of the more fun things like survival and he sails so they do knot tying and swimming. The biggest thing for her now that she doesn't go to public school is that she is taking a karate class with my husband. Of course my husband is teaching and nearing his black belt and she is a white belt, but he is Japanese on one side of his family and is able to pass that on to her. Our entire lives changed. Dads are so vital to a child's education and upbringing. I'm glad my husband took on that role for Emma from day one and never looked back. I am also glad he agreed and was on board for homeschooling from day one and was willing to put up the finances to defend our decision if need be. Kudos to your husband for supporting you because so many men don't support their wives and women get stuck with putting their kids in public school.
I was lucky, my husband was completely on board from the start, but we just started homeschooling in December 2017. Our then 2nd grader wasn't having a good school experience and we were both worried about him emotionally, so the discussion was easy for us to homeschool all three of the kids.
Thanks for sharing your perspective on homeschooling. It was nice to see dads supporting the mom in their homeschooling journey. It is hard work for mom and she needs all the support she can get especially from her spouse.

Robert Van Gorder Hi Robert,. I just want to say that it's great that you are doing the defending and hopefully protecting your wife from dealing with it. My husband is super protective and it means so much to know he values me and homeschooling so much. It frees me to focus on homeschooling without the added stress of being questioned about our choices and it also shows me that he believes in me. Every now and then, when I've had a bad homeschool day and questioning my own abilities, my husband listens and tells me I'm doing an amazing job. He is also involved and helping. We're a team.

This was the first video I've seen from you and it was very entertaining! 😊 My husband and I are actually the opposite of you guys as far as schooling backgrounds go. He was pretty adamant about wanting to homeschool our kids (I was pregnant with our first when we started talking about it), and I was dead set on public school 😬 I ended up changing my mind, thankfully, and we've been homeschooling ever since my oldest was in kindergarten (he's finishing up 6th grade)! We have five kids, with another one due in January, so I will definitely be checking out more of your videos!! 😃👍
I’m the same way! I don’t want to give up the control in teaching 🤣 but my husband is cool with that, he likes to do the science experiments and the outside play
You guys are so cute😊 your story is pretty similar to mine. I was homeschooled and my husband went to public school. And from the beginning I wanted to homeschool. We homeschooled our oldest for Kindergarten and put him in public for 1st. And because of that experience, we’ve decided to homeschool all of our kids! Keep up the good work!

I love the idea that time with Dad in any capacity, whether it’s just outside hanging out and chatting or changing a tire, is Dad’s contribution to schooling. Just Dad being available and home has a huge impact on the kids and it helps to reduce tension when we are not like “you need to do science with them!” and then they don’t and then there are fights etc. Like you said, your gifts are academic inside teaching and his gifts are outside, and that we each need to make things work for our personal gifts. My husband is really against it. We both went to public school though. He's a bit similar to your husband. I'm trying to convince him. I think it would be good for the kids. My husband works nights and weekends and the flexibility in schedules is a plus for us. But the atmosphere of public schools scare me with all the bullying and other issues. I have similar feelings to those expressed in the video. Side note, your husband is hilarious.
That was great to watch! Jonathan was hilarious. I am a SAHD, that did 99% of the education, untill my wife decided to go back to school. I still do most but she is able to help little more . I try and leave her alone though, she now has "home-work" too (LoL)! This has been a hard journey for me, being a "dad" that is doing this, I had to exclude my self from many function because I would have been the only dad. I would be very interested in learning about Canada's laws in regards to HSing!
Homeschool On yay!! The terrain and weather looked familiar in some of your vlogs. He grew up in vanderhoof but we are now in Alberta. My husband has a handful of cousins that are RCMP officers in BC and Alberta so your family is even more relatable. So exciting to find you. Btw, I have been so blessed by your blog, vlog and podcast lately as I’ve been trying to completely revamp our homeschool. My daughter is 10 and quite dyslexic. Wondering if AAR and AAS might be what we need. I implemented your morning basket ideas and want to try looping. Love the changes coming to our home because of it. Your podcast on kids falling behind has been a gift from the Lord. Blessings!
You don't have to stick with your choice. It's perfectly okay to defer your decision and send your kids to school for now, and then decide later on that homeschooling is a better fit. Or not, as the case may be.
what i think about home schoolin is that the parents are having major sepanx. whatever it is that they will learn in traditional school is what they need to know about the world. however we want to put our children in a bubble and keep them safe from the challenges of the outside world, is just not possible and not really a practical move. let them experience the obstacles, competition,and all the social learning they can get along the way. the outside world is tough. let them have the experience to learn how to tackle the scary world we have. after all, everyone grows up, and parents are not always gona be there for us.
