Charles Blow talks to Casey Parks, contributing writer at The New Yorker, on the noticeable rise in homeschooling among Black families, mainly to have their kids avoid racism and inequality in the school system. Rates have increased from 3.3% in the spring of 2020, to 16.1% in the fall of 2020.
"Even before the pandemic, the number of Black families schooling to home school had doubled from about 84,000 to about 150,000," Parks says.

I just watched this segment with my husband and we were talking about how it’s time our communities build our own schools to educate our kids the way we want them to! We know what our kids need. I know we already have HBC colleges but we should start working towards having our own schools with black leaders, in every major city in America! I homeschooled our first born and by the time he went to school he was reading second grade books at 4 years old. Spoke 3 languages and could count up to 1000. His teacher couldn’t believe how smart he was and how much he knew. He knew all the countries of the world and capitals cities of Africa, North America, South America and Europe, the solar system, science and geography and most importantly he knew he came from a rich history and his identity was instilled in him from as young as a baby. We instilled in him to have a pride in his heritage and in his Islamic faith! Only we can give our children what they need and deserve.

I agree! But it's going to take Black politics to get Black schools built in our community. Unfortunately many of us don't have the stomach to do the Black politics that's necessary...

👏🏾 That is amazing. I definitely agree with the concept of us teaching our kids exactly what they need to know about who we are and where we came from. It does worry me that you sent him to school early just hope that he wouldn’t have problems with the teachers or other student. That is one excellent kid thou!!!

Homeschooling among blk Americans has been on the rise since before the pandemic. I took my daughters out of a blk private school years ago, now they are both 2 academic years ahead. They are so much happier now. I only regret not taking them out sooner.

Me and millions of others lol. It's very true. These people enslaved our ancestors and have been abusing and killing us ever since. Here it is over 400 years later and WE'RE GIVING THEM OUR PRECIOUS BABIES only to subject them to the same abuse and murders. No way in hell am I ever doing that again. I honestly don't know why I never considered it an idea in the first place but I did and did so fast. I have one child who graduated public school. I have 7 who graduated from homeschool and 4 more still attending. We got this, family, we got this.

I really believe in the formative years the foundation that is set will either propel them to prosperity & healthy life when that foundational structure is sound. We just can't get that depending on the oppressor. We've got to do it for our people's mental, spiritual & physical wellbeing. MJ told us, "They don't really care about us."

I'm a twice retired master teacher. This is the best advice to give African American, Mexican or Islamic parents who are willing to sacrifice in order to secure their children's future. First of all, less than half the teachers are qualified to teach young African American or minority children. Teachers weren't willing to return to school nor research current curriculums and strategies to increase their knowledge to instruct proficiently. Many times, as the lead teacher, I needed to instruct teachers how to master mathematics and technology. Many times younger European American teachers were hateful to African American students. European Amer. teachers would pretend they couldn't understand our children's language or choice of words. My former school district didn't allow us to teach the state social studies curriculum. Classrooms grades K - 5 didn't have any social studies materials, globes or maps unless teachers purchased the resources. I retired last summer totally annoyed by America's educational circus. I'm in contact with many of my former students and families. I financially assist my former students who attend college. African American students are in jeopardy of failing educationally and emotionally in both public and private schools settings. Truthfully, if your child is having difficulties in school, make surprise weekly visits and communicate with your children in depth.

@@Dom-xi8je I’m not against homeschool…. I homeschooled my child until she went to kindergarten. I know that’s a short timespan but it really helped her be a high achiever. The social aspect of it could can be challenging for an only child especially. How intentional with social activities can you be with a plandemic putting your child in isolation from her peers. Anything can happen that you have no control over their going to have to interact with the world at some point.
@amandar614
@amandar614 3 года назад
@@QueenBees456 I have an only child that I am homeschooling. We found an online platform called, "outschool" where kids can join social clubs and take fun classes so they can interact with other kids. That has been helpful during all the COVID19 stuff. But before that she was in gymnastics, ymca classes, art classes etc. There are numerous ways to "socialize" your only child without having to step foot in a school system. The real world is nothing like a classroom anyway, so what exactly is it teaching them? My daughter probably is out in the world more than public school kids. (Grocery store, the park, the library, trips to the zoo, museums, farms, etc). Also a childs main influence should not be other children their own age. Yes, they should have some interaction with other kids, but being around adults more will teach your child much more effectively in preparing them for adulthood.

It's extremely important to understand what your children are being taught and fed! The knowledge is definitely something to pay attention to and are they advancing enough? Always talk to them and the administrators. I found that the school system failures are hidden so you must pay close attention. They also aren't teaching them real history!

Once black people figure out that school choice, including the choice to home school, is the best option for them the teachers Unions are dead. Give vouchers to families based on the amount of money the failed public school system would have spent on each child. Let the family use that voucher for a private school, or let parents straight up keep that money if they are home schooling.

I just read an in-depth article on Yahoo about this and I just wanted to please ask these black families that are choosing to home school their children to not take sports away from them. I don’t blame you parents for doing this at all but I do think the lack of sports would be very bad for those kids mentally and physically. These is that Tim Tebow style rule that allows homeschooled children to still play school sports. Im just throwing this out there in case any parents were not aware.

The school system in America sucks! Everyone knows it. There are good schools and good teachers, but not enough to go around and ensure quality education and experience for everyone. Public schools are so bad about removing great things from education and the inserting junk instead, like critical race theory, lgbtq, history told only from “Caucasian” perspective, to name a few. Most of them invite no sense of innovation by teachers with great ideas and teaching methods and only want to stick to the status quo. Eventually, the status quo gets old, you become irrelevant, and you either “change or die”. We are seeing the slow death of institutionalized education in our country from Kindergarten thru college.

If you can, homeschool isn’t as over why as you think and their are homeschool communities or you could build a community to be able to do things like group projects and field trips. I believe it’s easy to humble someone when they are older, but it’s harder to build them up from a deficit when they are older. Pray on it and do research so you’re ready.
