A brief examination of the wonders of the volume control on an old Les Paul Junior. Thanks for watching the show my dear Homeskoolers. Paypal tip jar is tombukovac@gmail.com Homeskoolin merch available at www.guitarhouse.net
@@chrislestermusic you hit the nail on the head. Single pickup guitars are, in my view, some of the most versatile guitars in the world because they allow the voice of the player to shine and provide the variation.
Hey Tom, my wife was recently diagnosed with breast cancer which is a shock. One of my areas of solace during this tough time is guitar. In recent years, I've tended to be in a bit of rut, but you're Homeskoolin' classes been a great source of inspiration. What I've found is that when my playing is inspired, I'm inspired and I'm better able to inspire my wife to walk through this tough time with grace and peace. Thanks for staying true to yourself. It's a breath of fresh air.
This magic show reminds me of going to my friends house in the summer of 1976 where we listen to the stones and he shows me how to play wild horses and we are just digging being alive. Tom there is so much humanity in your playing and in your conversation . Your love of playing guitar is so infectious and your teaching without being condescending is like a friend showing you how to play a stones song in the 70’s. Thanks bro!
We can see so much support for Tommy B. There's so many names coming to pay musical respect I honestly think in 25 years time people will say during the Covid19 period they learnt so much about music from this straight up unassuming guy..Sometimes rough times offer up true gems.. Home skoolin is definitely one of the best
Gordon is over 3.2K subs already, largely your referrals I am sure. What an artist he is....!!! His dips into the emotional and spiritual component of music is great.
"It's easy to play, but someone has to come up with it." Gem. I realized that's how I rank my favorite guitarists, and guitar music. Who has created memorable - timeless - guitar parts? Why I love Gilmour, Townhend, Walsh, any Beatles, any Steely Dan guitarist, Page, Honeyman-Scott, ... Bukovac! .... and why not so much, ummm ... (name of shredder here).
Thanks Uncle Larry. I got my '59 Junior a month ago and it's a fantastic, inspiring instrument. I haven't had a reissue that responds in the same way. I agree with your discussion point about the volume control, and I find the tone control is similarly perceptive to slight adjustments. The two controls in tandem almost act as dual EQ controls in a way that modern P90s or humbuckings don't seem to.
Hey Will, I wanted to add a photo, but I don't know if you can do that here. It's almost completely unfaded cherry. Has a few nicks and dings but otherwise in great condition. The neck is pretty chunky, but I've felt fatter. Man, I love that thing!
My 58LPJR never sounded so great until I put the Savvy on it and tuned it…. I love it more and more now…. It sounds that way unplugged…. Loud and sweet…. Thank you for Music City Bridge genius!!
Tommy, I’ve been wanting to say this for weeks. The way you have the phone positioned, and when you lean forward, it gives the perception that you are in a tiny house. LOL I LOVE IT!!
Hey Uncle Larry, we all know that Dave Stewart is a great guitar player himself. It would be off the chain if you could get him on the show and maybe playing a little guitar with you. Just a thought.
Catching up on 2 weeks of episodes going backwards and man does that Junior sound sweet ! You're a guitar players guitar player bro for sure..Makes me think of YES and that Junior sounds like a dream !
1. Felt stuck with my guitar for couple of days.. 2. Uncle Larry brings up some new chords 3. So inspired to learn and Play 4. Moved 58-60 LP Jr. from a third place on my dream list to number 1. Thank you Uncle Larry!
Just got my Rolling Rock Homeskoolin’ T-shirt. Proud to be a member of the T3 (TomTimeTeam). You really are a truly gifted artist and we all are grateful you are sharing your talent and wit with us particularly during all this global insanity.
ey Tom, so glad to discovered your channel. I am 53 yr old and cannot believe how you are refounding a totally new way to approach my guitar play, more musical, much more enjoyable and fun and this is all about...thanks covid for brig this guy to youtube! greetings from Argentina
I have to thank you Tom, I never visualized playing octaves like that before. This is one of those rare occasions where you learn a new technique that fits your playing style perfectly
Hey Tom, thanks for the channel i'm just a camp fire guy but the knowledge that comes from your channel is priceless.I also play in the garage & a father of 3 so i play, watch your videos, drink beer dialed!
Thanks for turning me on to Gordon Mote. He is simply amazing I think he's one of the best musicians I've ever seen really enjoy it. Not taking anything away from your show Uncle Larry your show is the Zen.
Uncle Larry, I think I finally figured out why I love your music that you create so much. It references something my Dad said to me being a landscape painter(Cleveland Art School). He said that you want to pair paint colors against one another that are opposites, because they make a dramatic statement and standout. It is like the chords that you play, they are eartistically (New word!) interesting because they catch your ear and sound dramatically different than standard chord progressions that you hear on the radio. Your music is subtle but has a bold heartfelt statement. I don't know if I am explaining it clearly, but thank you for sharing your amazing music!!
I would like to thank you for all the content and information that Tom Bukovac is providing. Thank you for real! I live in Brazil and started watching your videos thanks to simultaneous translation from youtube. Thank you! God bless you and your whole family ...
Hey Tom, Ian Thornley from Big Wreck uses that Jimmy Page lick so often. I love it. Thanks for sharing and reminding me to go listen to some Big Wreck.
Great Homeskoolin' class today Uncle Larry.....those chords, very cool, Les Paul Jr. TV yellow...super cool....P90's are the sound of Rock n' Roll!! IMHO...The Who Live at Leeds arguably the greatest live record ever, Early Black Sabbath and Carlos Santana, Man!!....and oh yeah, your good 'Ol Uncle Larry Bukovac throwin' it down on todays lesson. Thanks so much Tom. Hey Larry how about a lesson on getting all those crazy "Train country sounds" sound effects what not. Cheers Tom.
Recently discovered you and your series! WOW, have I been in the dark. These are the lessons I have longed for.. Thank you! Its not "here practice this pattern 5,000 times"... Your lessons actually get me thinking beyond that type of stuff! Anyway, I quickly ordered my t-shirt! Thanks again!
Tom, your tone and playing on this was phenomenal. Love watching videos like these, checking Reverb, getting antsy, and then reminding myself the tone is in the hands. Much love man
Dear Uncle Larry, following one of your early pieces of advice I went back and gave the Beatles catalogue a good thorough listen and learnt a few tunes off each album. Man I can't tell you how much it was a benefit to my ear for melody and understanding arrangements better... but I mean, there are so many other obvious choices when it comes to guitar ;-)
I'm having the first rehearsal for a new project today with two other guys who are awesome multi-instrumentalists. I can't wait because they're both so brilliant and creative that it should be really fun.
Good morning Uncle Larry. Love the Junior. They are by far my favorite Gibson, not to exclude the specials. The P-90's and a bare bones rock machine. I love mine. It's a 2019 DC tribute with a Wilkinson adjustable wraptail. Not the cool factor of a vintage, but is my number 1.
Loving your channel. Saw Dave and Annie in a band called The Tourists way back in the mists of time in a pub called The Family in Australia. Love the way they've both kept it real.
What a great way to end an at times troubled weekend. Brings back some positivity and stability. You just crack me up. Ain't that the truth about music store etiquette? Some people just don't know when to kind of tone it down. Also crazy volumes... Would love to see Dave Stewart join you. What a cool dude, too.
Thanks so much for doing these. I wait all weekend to see what you will come up with. So much entertainment, obviously, from your generosity and the goodness of your heart. I tell everyone I meet with any interest in guitars to sign up. It never gets old. 8-)
Tommy, You are the master of hiding the pick when the need arises to finger-pick.... I try and these old hands won't cooperate! Thanks for keeping us entertained. And I love that old LP!
Hello from Brazil! Every guitar you play sounds fantastic! Congratulations for your dedication and for the show! you make me study more and more! thank you
Hey Tom! A little hello from France. I hope to meet you one day, maybe in France? 😜. Thank you again for your videos, it's a real pleasure to listen to you every day!
Love the insight into the Tronics on the JR. And for making Sunday a good day. Busted out my Mickey Baker book again thanks to you. messing around with complex chordal voicings you show us.
Was fortunate to work at electric lady studios in the late 90’s. Dave Stewart was doing a record and on his way in one morning saw these electric scooters which were all the rage downtown at the time. He asked us to go out and buy two of them. ($800-$900 each?) and we set up the studio for him to ride the scooters through the hall and into the load in for studio A live room in a loop. He spent most of the day doing that.
Gostaria muito de agradecer por todo coteúdo e informações que você Tom Bukovac está disponibilizando. Obrigado de verdade! Eu moro no Brasil e comecei a assistir os seus videos graças a tradução simultanea do youtube. Obrigado! Deus abençoe você e toda a sua família...
Cool lesson! Great voicings, love how it moves, been using the octave J.P. trick for years, great in acoustic jams for blowing minds..totally badass axe too.. Thanks Tom
OMG that opening riff sound so great jammin it with my Heartfield DC5 fretless with full flats and hoooooo it's smoooth gonna have to capture a solid jam later. I literally grabbed it off the rack as soon as I heard the first couple chiming notes skim on in to the room...instant inspiration triggering jam, man, no lie, thank you for that - needed one today and you came through! So Jimmy Page-y and therfore also amazin
Nice that when I finally got to the lesson part that the JP call was on - except I think he usually played a walnut stain but in all fairness I was pretty stoned during my peak LZ phase and not much has changed since lol haaa
Ahhh Tom. The guitar store stories. I spent 15 years running guitar stores. People who think that a store is an opportunity to show people their songs..a captive audience as it were. I encountered that more than a few times! I also had people come in and sit there and basically conduct lessons.
Great story from your musicstore owner days about the hipster band members playing in your store... Made me smile and grin and kinda reminds me of the musicstore scene from Wayne´s world - NO STAIRWAY. :-D
Hey Tom, Don here again. I follow a shit load of guitar players on RU-vid and I have to say the sound of your guitar is head and shoulders above anyone else. It has to be the microphones, mike placement, interface or whatever the hell else you are doing, but man it is spot on. Can you give us the skinny on how you are doing it? Love your show, never miss it. I've been playing guitar for 60 years and I learn something from you everyday, and isn't that the point. Stay cool, dude.
@@donaldnelson8764 Tom is recording with his iPhone propped on an old small parts drawer. Mostly he is playing through a Boss Cube practice amp that is on the workbench just out of view and a pedalboard.
Hey Tom. Thank you for what you said about not egotistically playing your own songs loudly in a music store. I work at everyone's favorite corporate chain of music store and even in times like these, people still feel the need to come in and scream "look at me" through their instrument of choice. The anecdotes about cringe-worthy customer performances never end. It's not open mic night. My personal least favorite is the melodramatic acoustic guy who occasionally sings very loudly during his quiet song. Thanks for everything Tom.
Time to print up a nice sign that you put up on your shift. "No performances allowed'. Which will give you immediate right to shut them down. Iso booths are great for every department. Big mistake is putting chairs out. Take charge Mr. Sean!
