I recently bought a homestead in New Zealand with my wife @carrierad and we are doing home renovations, but I made a big mistake and the result is a disaster. Watch it all unfold for yourself.
I'm Alex, I'm a travel filmmaker, photographer, and TV host. On this channel, I'll share travel guides, homesteading vlogs as well as motivational and inspirational videos from lessons I've learned during my life. On the homestead, I'll share cooking recipes from international cuisine using vegetables grown in my home garden. Hopefully, my videos will help you learn new skills, find happiness, inspire exploration, and grow your creativity. Stay tuned friends!

Mate...! Welcome to the moneypit that is owning a home! Really glad you didn't edit out the 'fails', or rather the learning experiences, because I think we've all been there - in one form or another - and the fact that you both got through it with laughter and not blame is a beautiful thing. Btw in Arabic we say Al-hamdo-illah after someone sneezes and you know we don't talk about Fight Club, right ;-)

Yup! Home owning is a money pit! I just bought a house and in the first month we had a huge leak in the main pipe and interior pipes, then te AC compressor died. In Texas. In the summer. $14k later, we got no money but the house is ok!

Planting trees is very important, its important to know that the land you're on is deforestated land as is much of NZ, i think a cool way to give back to the whenua (land) is to become a kaitiaki (guardian) by re planting as many of our beautiful and unique endemic native species into your property. They will provide food and shelter for our native species who dont have many safe havens. Doing some basic pest control will also help make your home a conservation asset. Some of my favourite native plants Pururi, rimu, flax, kowhai, nikau, cabbage, manuka, kanuka (Pests to remove if you can that will welcome native speices back onto your property) Rats, stoats, weasels, hedgehogs, possums.
@johnpaki1534
@johnpaki1534 2 года назад
Well said bro your comment means alot, most farmers or landowners are now on board and doing their bit in land conservation(planting) and the irradication of pests, "give back to the land what we took and the land will give back to you"

Thank you guys so much for sharing this mistake, something I have come to realise is that people with 'experience' just means they have made more mistakes. I wanted to give up on homesteading while building my chicken enclosure because I didn't have the experience to make the whole thing square or level etc using recycled materials (my OCD wanted it perfect) and my wife said "it just has to be able to hold chickens", put it into perspective for me that you need to make mistakes to learn.

Welcome to rural living in NZ, I almost fell off my chair laughing at the water disaster. Hubby and I have had over 40 years of ups and downs, with both equipment, and our animals. Sheep, Cows, dogs,, possums, etc. You name it we've been there done that. I just loved the fact you were honest and did not delete the emergency lol. Well done to the two of you. We've bottle fed orphaned lambs, we've had milk feeders for calves, all of which became too close to being pets! Thank the lord my hubby is a Kiwi, who had to put me in my place re naming all of our livestock lol. Now I have zero to do with the cattle, makes our lives much easier to lead lol. I'm English and still to this day, find it rather distressing to separate my common sense from sheer stupidity. I can't tell you how much I enjoy your videos xxxxx

With the temporary washing machine plumbing you have, which drains into the tub/sink. Remember to always check the drain is clear every time you wash. One time I forgot I left some socks in the sink, the washing machine couldn’t drain and it overflowed and flooded the laundry. Amateur hour!

Alex consider if you are going the gas way of heating water, just get a gas calafont so you have hot water on demand no need for storage cylinder I've had one for years.
@michaelheliotis5279
@michaelheliotis5279 2 года назад
From the sounds of it, I think that's the plan. He mentioned not wanting to pay for hot water while it wasn't being used and opening up the space currently occupied by the tank, so I presumed that meant doing away the tanks entirely and using a calafont, rather than merely heating the tank with gas.
@barryhansen6854

That valve to turn the water off is called a Toby, which I always thought was a cute name so if you're doing anything in relation to taps or pipes always remember to go see Toby first. I'd suggest not opening up the wall when you remove the hot water cylinder but instead turning it into a cupboard to hold stuff like your vacuum and brooms etc. Having lived in a house the era of yours, the bane of my existence was not having enough built in storage and you have a perfect opportunity to have a huge cupboard there.

I also took out my old electric hot water cylinder and put in bottle gas Rinnai instant water heating. You will also notice that the country gets a lot of flies in the warmer months due to all the animals. Does the house have fly screens over windows? I also fitted a WiFi controlled Heat Pump to cool the house in the hot Wairarapa summer. I can turn the unit on, and adjust the temp of the house when I'm out, and it makes the hot summers so much better.

Note about the pipes! (Although your plumber might have mentioned it/ figured it out already). If you’re increasing the pressure make sure your pipes are set up & okay to handle it - if they’re not they can burst (which is awful especially when it’s in a terrible place like a wall)

Hi Alex, I'm not sure if you're interested; however, I highly recommend looking into various energy-efficient ways for hot water. You can get 'heat pump' hot water systems (warning - they're quite pricey!) and also solar hot water systems. However, I also understand you can go so far in depth on various energy-efficient aspects to the house that it can be very pricey. Such as looking into the windows (double glazing), passive airflow, insulation in the walls - this can be done without having to strip the house back bare. Alot of research - but maybe If it is a forever house and solar power is something you may consider down the track. (loving the vlogs and house updates/fails. We all have those moments!) :)

I was also thinking about things like this. Here in the Netherlands everyone has gas but we've started to realise that it's running out and we have to move away from fossil fuel, so we've actually been thinking about heating with a heat pump or solar!

The joys of discovery and learning curves, just sometimes the clean up is worst than the task. Better to apply a small quantity of sheep to your garden and dig it in, with the rest going into your compost bin. Green waste/ dead waste/layer sheep and repeat. Transfer one bin to the next ='s turning it over. Your compost should smell sweet, no offensive odour, if so it is still breaking down. Best manure, sheep, cow, goat. Horse contains seeds so be aware, preferably put into compost first. Chicken only in small quantities. Your tap experience is a bit like mine way back when I put in an irrigation system - I forgot to open the regulator on the valve head before turning the flow on - there was an almighty bang and I watched the valve head disappear into the clouds followed very quickly by a fountain of water - lesson learnt. Keep smiling and enjoy the moments that you will one day look back on.

Don’t install gas. Bad Carbon footprint. Go solar and batteries, install a windmill or use the flowing water on your property to generate power? Lots of options other than gas. Even having to pay a bit more for your electricity is worth it, as most of NZ’s grid electricity is generated by renewable methods.

I have just discovered your channel after watching some Europe blogs....dreaming of a trip in 2024! and am delighted to see you are in New Zealand now. My family live in Masterton, and we have friends who have rural properties ,so I have found yur yourtube renovation s great, especially the water disaster one...that was hilarious ... so entertaining, I was laughing for ages. Well done for including it in your line up- very relatable!!

Bless your hearts...I wanted to cry for you and laugh for you at the same time! You both have the best outlook on what happened and seems like some good came out of it; you're also much more savvy now than you were before. Thank you for not hiding your mistakes (ahem...learning opportunities). Thank you for showing that life has it's hard parts, even when you're living out your dreams. You're both doing great!

In Denmark we say "Prosit" instead of "Bless you" which means, "wish it may benefit you" in old latin. In olden days people were superstitious and sneezing was seen as something bad, so they thought the only way to prevent something bad from happening was to say "Prosit". Thanks for enlightening us in both the good and let's just say not so good sides about home renovation😅 wish you the best of luck with the rest of the renovation!

100cm = 1m. 6 inches is 15.24cm. A lot less than 100cm or a metre. Both your videos (you and Carrie) are always so calming, adventurous and fun all at the same time. It's a journey watching you guys and how you deal with things. The beautiful, and the difficult (and the difficult often times makes the difficult!) Cheers! Also love the little native kowhai tree visible at 15:58 with the yellow/golden bell like flowers! It would have been yellow all over without any seeds a month ago! (Typically). Tui and NZ Bellbirds/korimako birds love em :))

Installing a washing machine at a new place is a big fear for me! If you are going to use LPG, make sure you're in a delivery zone with suppliers (they usually don't allow pick ups). You will want 2x45kg bottles. Rural properties sometimes only have 1-2 set days a month for delivery. In general, if you aren't going to use a lot of hot water/consumption ( 2-3 person household won't use much) then LPG can be cheaper than electricity and natural gas (best if you use a lot of hot water and/or gas heater- would recommend a heat pump instead and then a heat transfer system). Looking at your situation. Some people with LPG heating will go through 1-2 bottles a month during the colder months (due to the pressure required for heaters- same with hot water if its a very cold morning, both bottles will be used at the same time). Hot water - potentially 6 bottles a year and then 1 bottle per year for cooking. Make sure you get a full run down from the gas fitter on how the LPG system works and where/how to relight the pilot light. During a power outage it wont work. Maintenance wise - replace the LPG hoses every 5-6 years and have a gas fitter come out every couple of years to do a check up.

omg that was so funny, if a bit weird, usually there is a tap like outlet but it is a old place i suspect that there was perhaps a concrete twin tub like sinks here some years ago. ... also we don't call it a mud room, but a wash house, cause that is where the washing machine lives, and its that size so it can fit in the wringer washing machien from the 50's my nana had one. New Zealand housing can be quite querky sometimes.. ♥

Hey Alex- sorry to see the mess with the washing machine install. When plumbers talk about "Low Pressure" systems, they are referring to the hot water system (boiler) not the cold water. Cold water is being pumped out at mains pressure. The hot water coming out the top of the immersion heater cylinder is low pressure. A lot of older houses in NZ had this "low pressure" hot water system installed as it was cheaper to install and in theory lower maintenance- and with most NZ houses, quick and cheap was always the main priority with building. The main drawback of this system being that it can take time for the hot water tap to run hot (30 secs) and for showers, it means your overall shower pressure is low and there's a fine line between scalding hot and freezing cold because the shower mixer is trying to mix High pressure cold water with low pressure hot water- and because of the pressure difference, the mix isn't very good. Gas on-demand water heaters can save around $200 per year compared to a hot water tank / cylinder that is constantly using electricity to maintain heat. And yes the hot water cylinder will eventually fail (the heating element is the thing that often breaks) so it's good to get it replaced- although I've heard some cylinders last for as long as 25-30 years. But it could go at any time.
@paulmara2695
@paulmara2695 2 года назад
Oh and top tip. If you do get a gas on demand hot water heater, make sure if it is installed inside, that the plumber runs the exhaust vent to the outside of the house pointed away from any bedroom windows. Sometimes NZ plumbers don't do this for some reason but there's been unfortunate reports of people getting Carbon Monoxide poisoning in NZ from poor installation of gas water heaters inside. Most plumbers should do this. But just something to make sure of. Some plumbers sometimes install the gas heater outside to get around this issue and simplify the set up. The down side to this is that the unit is more exposed to the elements and inlet pipes into the unit could freeze during the winter, stopping it from working. Also make sure to get a carbon monoxide alarm for the room it is installed in as an added precaution. Some hot water gas heaters need a mains electricity connection for the ignition. This can add an additional cost as well to get the electrician out to sort out wiring for this as well. However some systems do run off small D batteries (which gets around this issue) but it depends on what size you are looking for. This option can also be helpful because power outtages can happen in NZ from time to time, so if you have no mains electricity, then you can't get the ignition spark for the system even if you have full gas bottles and water tanks. Average shower pressure is about 6-8L per minute. A 20L/min on demand gas heater unit should do the trick although speak to the plumber. In reality, the actual real life working outflow tends to be about 60% of this figure = 12L / min. Which should still be fine for simultaneous use of shower and hot taps in kitchen etc. Also worth thinking about where to position the gas heater (inside) relatively close to an outside wall where the exhaust vent hole can be placed / drilled through. And also close to where you'd locate your LPG cylinders....again somewhere reasonably accessible to the driveway as they are heavy to move. Also consider getting gas pipes installed into the kitchen at the same time (whilst the plumber is doing the work) if one day you decide to get a gas range to cook on. Will be cheaper to install it all together than two separate jobs. Expect a 45L LPG tank to last around 4-6 months for showering / hot water needs. Oh and make sure to get an exact quote and timeframe from a plumber before agreeing to go ahead with work. Some NZ Plumbers have a knack of finding extra costs for jobs and then wondering off (to other jobs) for a week or two before coming back to finalise the work.

I think it’s wonderful that you two are willing to dive right in and do something that you have not done before. You really can do anything as my wife will tell you. She has learned to do electrical and plumbing with self help books with illustrations. Her delight and satisfaction has been passing inspection from a qualified building inspector. Together, we built our own home in rural Alaska doing most of the work ourselves. You have done an incredible job with the wall repair and painting thanks to your meticulous surface prep work. It must be satisfying to stand back to enjoy the aesthetics of a finished room with the sunlight pouring in as though even God approves. What an amazing place you have with the fruit trees and flowers in bloom. With a well-fertilized garden that you have in the works, you can have plenty of food for yourselves and your neighbors. Somehow, I feel connected to you even though we are at opposite ends of the globe. Thank you for inviting me into your world. Take care. I like your hair the way it is, but if it’s in the way you may want to try something different.

@@AlexanderAyling Yes, plumbing is particularly challenging because of potential for leaks. Electrical gets complicated with multiple switches. Why did we do it? Labor costs are extremely high. We wanted a home that we could own without any debt. We could also build what we wanted. We raised seven children, five daughters, two sons. All are married with families of their own. Our children helped and gained valuable skills. Best to you as you pursue your dreams with your lovely wife..

Lesson there is "Always turn the water off before doing any kind of plumbing work!" I was thinking that watching you tackle that, then, whoosh. My personal experience with washer/dryer combo's is they're crap! They NEVER dry properly and only take small loads. Top loader washers and separate dryers are much better.
