HOMESTEADING DEBT FREE... OFF GRID with a BIG FAMILY - Gridlessness 

Wow. I will turn 42 and we are about 80% in completing the homestead (house, root cellar, greenhouse, workshop, barn, chicken coop, sauna). It has been a lot of hard work and the system has made it quite difficult for us. We had difficulties with building permits and the property tax&home insurance alone is becoming stressful (we are in Nova Scotia. Very high cost of living with very low wages). We were starting to look at Ecuador but we are not financially independent enough yet. Also I am getting tired and don't know if I would want to start all over again especially at the age that you mentioned (65!). But glad to hear that you are doing well and I wish you the best! Which province/state are you in?

@@fabiancanada8876 Hey, if you don't have a mortgage, like I don't, maybe do as I have done: I don't have homeowners insurance! Instead, I have $100K renters insurance. I own my home outright, but I created a living trust, it being the actual owner with me being the administrator and I "rent" my home from my trust for $1 a year (legal trick). My homeowners insurance jumped from $1,200 to $3,900 for no other reason than greed on the insurance company's part. My $100K renters insurance costs me $211 a year. The decision to switch was a no-brainer. Plus, with homeowners insurance, losses are "adjusted" ( read that, bend over and spread 'em). Renter's insurance pays replacement value on personal property losses, no "adjusting" and no hassle. I built this house (all welded steel and concrete). I can just build another one, if an EF5 Tornado sweeps this one to Oz, for no more than $20K in materials. I'm a retired plumbing & electrical contractor and certified welder. I homestead in North Texas.

I am about to do the same at 57. The area doesn't matter, what will be on offer does. It is liberating to think that i dont know where in the UK I will be this time next year. I am too late to provide the smallholding life to my 2 adult kids but my grandkids will have fun. That is if my kids produce any!

And the only reason you can say "it will be tough" is because you have expectations, which you can either drown in or throw to the winds. God Bless, and love one day at a time.
