Love this. Me and my mom have a property together. The mobile isnt nice and maybe one day she will get her own place on the property. But as a single mother im now able to start a small market garden, have a small chicken flock and some milk goats . So life is good to me .
My sweet heart and I are saving every penny we can to get our homestead. When we met we didn't know that the other deep down in side wanted to have a homestead. Until one day as I was working on my small garden. He came out to join me. He looked at me and said I enjoy this so much. Maybe someday we can have a small farm. He said he was so happy to see my eyes light up about the subject. Now we spend hours just sitting and talking about things we would love to do on our farm. He's active duty right now and for Vday he order 3 packs of seeds from baker creek. He made me so happy. I contacted him as soon as I could to let him know that I absolutely loved his Vday gift and that it was the most thoughtful thing he could have bought me for Vday. We may be a year or so away from finally buying our land. But we enjoy every moment of dreaming about it. I love what he says.. The journey is just as beautiful as the dream. And he is right. It's the small things like feeling the joy of a few packs of seeds that makes the journey worth it.

I'm the impatient get up and go one. Luckily my other half is the complete opposite and reigns me in lol. We bought our 10 acres last Aug. and so far just have 18 chickens living in our greenhouse. I want all those animals and this and that now but slow and steady wins the race. For now we're just cleaning up the land best we can and making compost. Hoping to start the actual chicken coop and our raised beds a few down the road when the weather is a bit nicer. Love you all's drive and affinity for simplistic life. Way to much stress out there in the world not to love and enjoy what you're doing.
@@davelawson2564 This is our main layer flock and they have 200 ft of premier one fence right now to range in. We'll do cornish in tractors on back pasture some time down the road but not ready for that now.
Well put Mike and Lacey. My husband and I bought our 10 acre property 22 yrs ago. We are now 62 and 65. I became disabled about 10 years ago. Now I have time on my hands I have concentrated on trying to expand the garden out so I can help my kids and their familys and the local food shelf. They have helped us out over the yrs of my being sick, so I will give back. I have some seeds that I have gotten the last couple of yrs but would love baker creek seeds. I look longingly at their seed catalog 😏🙂 I call it the wish book.. I love watching you both and the kids. Your all working hard to get what you need and teaching your kids the same. I live in the city now, just like you did. took out all the flower beds and started growing veggie in Sq foot beds all around my property. anywhere and everywhere I could put a seed to grow something I did it. my one neighbor hates it. LOL! the rest of them love it. my twins granddaughters just loves to help grandma plant food and they love to eat it. that why I love seeds and growing our own food. it taste good and fun. someday we'll find our bigger homestead in the country.
Mike and Lacey on March 26th we close on our homestead after a three year dream. We’ve learned to sacrifice now so we will have that mindset when we begin working our farm. It will be one baby step at a time. I love thrift stores, yard sales and consignment shops! It’s the best way to go! I am just too old to undertake homesteading any more. I used to raise chickens work a huge garden among other things and worked a full time job. I still with the help of my son and grandson cut my own firewood but that is pretty much that my back will let me do. Keep up the good work, you ae making it happen.
This is so informative. We are in the process of transitioning into homesteading. Our plan is 2 years, right now we are working on getting debt free. I watch you guys and am so inspired, I know there is a better way of living than just paying bills and going to work every day. I grew up on a farm when I was younger and loved every minute of it. It was a ton of hard work but I believe it is my passion. My only regret is that I didn't start sooner.

I would love some seeds. I live on 1.6 acres and this year I have two ponies on the property and have composted their manure. My vegetable garden is ready to plant, just waiting for the last frost which will be pretty soon. I am retired. So far, my place is just an expensive hobby, as I give away produce and eggs to friends and family. They all appreciate it greatly so that has been my compensation. I don't have a well, so my limiting factor is my water bill. Water is very expensive in Southern California. I think all that compost is helping the soil retain moisture, so I should be better off this year. Thanks for all the great advice. I love watching your videos!
Sounds good I hope water will be more accessible in the future in CA. I feel sorry for you there, I lived in the desert for 20 years. Be careful with horse manure they have a lot of grass seed in their manure (naturally) and you will be weeding all the time, maybe use mulch as a weed retardant or the fabric ground cover (residential doesn't last you have to get commercial grade, little more expensive but will last 25 years if you take care of it). Just learned that the other day thought I'd pass it on. Happy future and farming on your little homestead. P.S. I love ponies/horses.
Thanks to Harvey I lost over 100 quail 30 chickens and ver expenses pigeons we are still working on our house . But we are being able to work in our garden . Expanding it this year . God bless love your channel .

As a family of 7 we are always trying to shop smart to get the most for our limited resources. I have aspiring plans to can as much as I can from my garden this year to help with food security for my family.

I am married to a wonderful husband, a mom of 3 and grandma of 5! I love to garden and I garden with those grandsons and have been encouraging and teaching them things I have learned, which they enjoy! Times have been hard the past few years... I am a special education teacher in the public school system, I am also a cancer survivor and in the last 6 years I've had both hips replaced, among numerous other surgeries and when the spring hits I so look forward to that gardening, whether its veggies or flowers! I am trying to make somebraised beds, that my 76 year old father can work in. We both have several health issues, and are trying to eat better. My father has limited mobility, but loved gardening when he was growing up and while raising his 3 children. I want to ignite that passion in him, again. I want to show him a healthier way to chose seeds and bond over the garden once again with him. Thank you, for considering us.
Watched it and then watched it again two days later. We were stuck in the city for some time, had almost no expenses and plenty of money to spend. We maxed out our city garden and had some chickens but desperately longed for a place with a bit more space. Insanely high land prices made that very difficult. Finally found a rundown house with a piece of land and there it all began. I totally get the "no money for shoes" thing! Sourcing free wood has become a favorite and neccesairy hobby nowadays. Our house desperately needs new windows (old are broken/missing) but it's just not in the budget (approx 10.000 euros). You have to be frugal and look at things with a long term perspective. We are happy, healthy and have a good supply of food. We just love homesteading!
Great video! You guys always put a smile on my face! I started falling trees on my property last year, as soon as the ground thaws I will cut in the driveway and pad and move my (used) 5th wheel trailer over and be building! I work full time in town so the main focus will be building the cabin and a few raised beds along with containers for herbs. I am good on seed though, like I said I work full time lol....I would love to see them go to a family in need! Thanks again guys!

I don’t need many. I live alone in the city but I have a small backyard container garden. The containers consist of 3 fifty gallon animal watering troughs and 2 thirty gallon feed troughs sitting on my patio. But I grew a variety of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers (both sweet and jalapeños). It was enough for healthy eating for the summer and fall. I even fermented some of my peppers and cucumbers! Thank you for your inspiration and motivation! Growing on!❤️
Flowers Funny Farm we are on 1.23 acres. We have 2 steers, 1 goat due the end of April, 9 meat rabbits, chickens, 1 duck, goose, 1 pot belly pig, 5 dogs and 1 cat. Most of our animals were given to us free or we trades for. I want to garden more but still have to work. Our area has very wet spring so we have had to move to raised beds. We have been very creative in filling the beds kitcken scraps and rabbit poop. Love watching your channel, it gets me through work till I can get back home.
I would absolutely LOVE seeds. I'm trying to make a little bit of money this summer and sell some plant starts and recently I've had a few set backs with finances. My husband was layed off 2 weeks ago, and I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to fulfill the goal I had in mind. Gardening is truly the one passion I have, and the joy it brings my heart is indescribable. You are so right - it doesn't matter whether you have money to homestead. My hummy and I rented land, and grew our own food for years/ It was hard, as we had to work full time, too, as well as growing veg and animals, but we were young enough then to do it! :) It's an experience that everyone should have a chance to do, if they want to :)
We are in Victoria, Australia and it is extremely expensive to get acreage. Also our government regulations make it so difficult, almost feels impossible as first home buyers. Love your work. And your encouragement.
My husband and I are trying to work our way into homesteading. The last 2 summers he worked all the overtime he could so most weeks he was only home on Sunday and Im done with that nonsense. So we're trying to be creative in learning some new ways to bring in some extra $$$. I grew up farming so homesteading is perfect for me. Hes learning.
This is my third year gardening here in zone 8b & my first year starting my own seeds (4 kinds of tomatoes & a basil). Learning new varieties that maybe I wouldn't have thought of would be nice. I love y'all's enthusiasm and Spirit! And just for being real!
Back in the day All families lived on the same land and worked their gardens together and harvested and put it away together. If you didn't work you didn't eat was something often heard. Y'all are blessed Lacey's parents have let y'all set up your homestead there. It will benefit them greatly as they age and y'all are there to help and assist them. I have been on the lean side more than the well off most of my life and would not change a thing for it made me who I am today and strengthened me to handle situations most cannot. But at the end of the day it's all about doing all we can and the The Most High will help with the rest. If we obey Him, love and help others, all will be well with our soul. Be Blessed!

Family of 6, stay at home mom/homeschool teacher. We've really taken a hit with our income from this virus going around. My husband works on commissions and currently theres no customers. We still have our rent, utilities, car note, phone bills... we are really struggling to stretch our money for food. We already have some meat rabbits but having some great seeds would definitely help us gain some security and peace of mind.

I got some avarski peppers and pineapple tomatoes and ecineasha, could use any other kind of SEED. Last year I had a lot of flowers and some tomatoes from the dollar store. Not a lot of seed just enough to get started raising my on veggies. I'm stating a couple small raised bed gardens this year for me some fresh veggies. As I get older I see my health getting worse and I think if I start raising my own vegetables without all the chemicals in them that my health may get better. I don't need a lot of seeds just enough for myself.

I had been trying to do it all & driving 🚛 all week. I'm trying to focus on starting the seeds this weekend. Next weekend will be focusing on the greenhouse & tarping where the garden will go( my whole yard). Cutting some or all the limbs or even the trees. Setup the lights for microgreen & plant starts. I've decided to not to buy any groceries except milk, dog food, & unfortunately my energy drinks( it helps keep my sanity & not to kill car drivers also keeps me awake. 🐖 may come this year. More chickens & possible ducks, & turkeys again.

Great advice. My husband was recently disabled from complications from West Nile virus. He randomly passes out along with many other things. I’ve started trying to do more homesteading. Canning, some gardening, (trying more this year) we do have chickens as well. You just have to make things work as best as you can.

Man, I love y'all. I am learning so much. I am pretty much solo on the homestead as hubby works a job he loves and isn't a true foodie, but he doesn't mind eating well haha. I don't need seeds, if I had ordered everything I wanted to try fro the Whole Seed Catalogue I would need 375 years to plant and harvest all of it. Seeing last year's catalogue over Mike's shoulder all year last year is why I ordered it this year! I am growing, preserving and preparing food for three households (my parents, us, my daughter's family) and the market garden technique let's me produce nearly all our veggies year round. Lacie and Mike you guys are amazing! As you know, you two and your Vlog series are responsible for lighting the fire that has fueled my homesteading dream. This video definitely spoke to me since we recently purchased a place to develop our Homestead! We jumped in too fast with too much on some things and I had to pull the reins on others so we could catch up but it's all a learning experience! The place we bought has no infrastructure other than a home and a detached Workshop. The home was a thousand square foot smaller then our previous home in the suburbs so that's been an adjustment and lots of time spent purging unnecessary items! Purchasing a place with no infrastructure to develop a homestead has been excellent since it's a blank canvas and we can do what we want how we want but it is also proving to be costly and time-consuming. You spoke in your video about not having the tools that you needed to get the jobs done efficiently and we are living that right now. We have not pulled the trigger on purchasing a tractor yet nor do we have any other type of Machinery other than a pickup truck. We've had to hire people to take down very large trees on the property line in preparation for our perimeter fence and that is no fun! You also spoke in the video about the difficulties people can face if they are lacking basic gardening, farming, animal husbandry and homesteading skills. I want to mention that most people don't think about the carpentry skills that they will need on a homestead! Granted, the animals don't care if something isn't aesthetically pleasing, that's for sure! However, having the ability and know how to make something sturdy enough to stand up to weather and animals is crucial. I was in a position where I had to learn very quickly how to build an animal shelter when we had rains from Hurricane Dorian headed our way and my husband (who is always happy to build anything I ask for) was out of town working. I'm very proud of the pig shelter I made but it was definitely a humbling experience. If you remember, we searched for a place to develop a homestead for over three years and it was one heck of an emotional roller coaster ride! I've been researching and learning and helping other friends with Farms that whole time to try to get the experience in the knowledge I need and I still fall short, I expect I will fall short for quite some time now maybe even forever since we're perpetually learning! Well, all that to say is that I've definitely romanticized homesteading for years and I knew that I was romanticizing it and I knew that it was harder than my dreams about it. Homesteading is very hard, but I will tell you coming from someone who's dreamed of living this life for years, I can't even begin to describe the joy, fulfillment, Pride, and love that I feel at the end of the day knowing that I worked hard and achieved what I set out to do. I'm sure you to know that feeling also! Even on the cold rainy days when I still have to be out there doing something I still feel completely enriched at the end of the day. I hope this doesn't wear off and I hope I don't get used to this feeling and take it for granted. Also, while I would love to throw my hat in the ring to receive some free Baker Creek seeds I don't need them. I probably have too many already! Is that even a thing? Too many seeds? Anyway, huge thanks to you and your family for the content that you take time to provide for us. When we started this journey I had intentions of vlogging everything and it was just too much! ❤️❤️❤️
Wanting to be a homesteader but right now I am unable to afford one. I am disabled but doing what I can, am growing food in 5 gallon buckets. Right now I have garlic, green onions growing. Will have peas, potatoes and beets planted soon. Have built a compost bin out of old pallets and chicken wire. My disability check does not go very far but I scavenge items like old chicken wire and fencing , wood so that I can build a raised bed garden and have some chickens. Would love to have have some seeds so I can grow some more of my own food and make the grocery budget stretch. Like you guys did I make one trip to town once a month and that covers everything doc, propane, gas,shopping you name it. If I do not get it on that trip will I have to get next month. Love watching you guys you have giuven me a lot of helpful information keep up the good work.
You both are right on target! I am still working my way out of debt. First things first. Then I will need to save some money and THEN I want to purchase some land and move onto that. In the mean time I am growing peppers, tomatoes, and some other veggies right here in the city. I hope to have a few chickens and rabbits, too. I am legally allowed to have them, but I am afraid that my neighbors are going to raise a stink about the chickens. We will see how that goes. Smart shopping. Nothing wrong with shopping at a consignment shop. I still go to salvation army, goodwill, yard sales, and flea markets. You just take the stuff home and wash it. Good as new.
I loved this video, thanks for the added thinking points, and I would also love being considered for the seed give away. I just lost my job and need to move because my housing was job connected. There is some family land I can move to, so I can continue to be as self sustaining as possible. But setting up that old house, moving and buying my seeds and supplies is just not fitting into the budget. Gardening is not an option it has to be done. My grand-kids were disappointed when I said we would just be using what seeds I had left from last year. They knew their favorites were gone. So winning a give away would be a huge blessing.

I plant the veg that a buy to eat. eg I plant my carrot top and let them go to seed to collect them, collect the seeds from veg like tomatoes, capsicum/peppers, cucumber. Don't harvest all of the leak if you cut off the bit that you want to eat and it will keep growing etc, good luck

My husband and I need Baker Creek seeds because we have the land to grow produce for us and our children but not the extra funds to obtain the seeds. We could likely purchase seeds that have GMO and chemicals in them but I have serious health issues where I cannot eat ANY gluten or dairy, so relying on produce is extremely important to my well-being. My husband is diabetic and our youngest was born with diabetes, so having healthy fresh vegetables is also very important. We have always hoped we could get 'healthy', non-GMO, and non-chemical seeds.
Jeanette just so you know you can not purchase gmo seeds. They are only available to the big agro businesses and sold with contracts and chemicals to grow them. The non gmo seed packages are just green washing. You can purchase seeds that are sourced from the biotechs ( Monsanto owns over 40 % of all our heirloom and organic seed.) Mostly sold at the big box stores.For example Burpee sources many of their varieties from Seminis which is owned by Monsanto. The seeds are all perfectly safe for you to grow. Its how you grow them. If you need seed I have quite a seed collection here and am happy to share . all of my seed is sourced from responsible companies and much of it saved by myself. If you are unable to get your hands on some let me know. Good luck.
I am 68 years old and have been homesteading since I was 21 with little money , I save seeds from what I eat and plant them its free....there are many seeds for sale also that are not GMO and are cheap look for any seeds that say heirloom, even the dollar store has them. I would buy a pack of seeds start them and sale the extra plants to pay for the seeds etc.
@@jeanettebateman6394 Thank you , seriously if you need them , happy to send. Other things I have done to get free seeds are buying organic peppers that were grown locally and saving the seed . A week on a paper plate on the counter and they are ready to save . I've had almost 100 % germination from red and yellow bells , jalapenos and pablanos. A woman I worked with literally took the seeds from a slice of tomato on a burger she ordered at a diner , dried them and successfully grew them on. I've grown beans from a package of dried black beans and dried kidney beans . More than you can ever grow in a 99 cent investment, Best way to get garlic is from a local farm stand. Its acclimated to your area and less than half the price of buying it from a company. You can root in water a sprig of rosemary , sage and basil. , if you can find chives in the grocery store with roots , just plant them . they will come back year after year. Find a gardener in your area ( we usually love to share ) Strawberries , backberries , raspberries send out more shoots than we can deal with. Asparagus crown seem expensive , but they will give you a twenty year pay off. I had to be creative also and have years into it.
I enjoy watching all your videos. I started mending my soil and building raised beds as I could afford or gather the materials needed the a few years back. this helps with y disabilities, ad help provide fresh vegs to my family and neighbors. Being disabled, I am on a tight budget, and can't always buy the seeds needed to grow a good verity of things. I always save the seeds of the things, that do well in my area, to save money the following years. I would love to try different varieties of vegetables but haven't had the extra money.
We don't need the seeds, but thank you anyway. We are in town (zone 5, Iowa). We are building raised beds in the back and have added dwarf fruit trees as 'landscape' in the front of the house. Every year we try to 'improve' our systems (eg: adding 'guilds' with the fruit trees with blueberries, comfrey, and strawberries; eg: covering the raised beds to be able to extend our harvest; eg: using succession planting to increase our production) Our biggest challenge is to make enough compost. The community composting facility adds ground up tires into their compost mix so we have ruled out using that option. We hope to use cover crops this year to help improve our soil. We are an older couple who started homesteading later in life. Our homestead income is a blackberry and blueberry farm. We started small with about 300 blackberries and just 100 blueberries. The first year was a disappointment because spring rains took out half of our crop. Then 2nd year was great and we learned we had a market for all the berries we could grow. This will be our 3rd production year. We are expanding our blueberries to about 400 plants and increasing our blackberries slightly. If all goes well I will be adding fresh cut flowers to the farm this year or next. When we started we began with cows. Unfortunately we bought at top of the market. Had mostly females and said let’s grow our herd!! It grew beyond capacity quick. And we learned we were just too old and my husband’s back problems made managing the animals (mostly the huge bull he purchased) too difficult. Anyway we sold at the bottom of the market and lost quite a bit. We then shifted to berry farm. But homesteading is an adventure and learning process. You have to be flexible. For extra cash flow I have herb, tomato and pepper transplants and sell fresh tomatoes from my garden. I also breed and train field labs that also provides extra income. I love you tube. I dream of doing a channel one day but not sure too many folks would find us interesting enough. Farming is long lonely hours. It is great and worth it but sometimes I think I would enjoy the community aspects of like minded people. Maybe you guys could do a pro/con about you tubing. I love love your channel and your family is precious 💕 FYI I don’t need seeds. All planted for the year. Good luck to everyone else.
