Every time I read this verse, it still guts me. Anyone who has, at a young age, experienced a deeply pure & naive love will understand why. ♡ " I was a child, and she was a child in this Kingdom by the sea, but we loved with a love that was more than love, I and my Annabel Lee."

This poem and the Haunted Palace are my favorite poems from Poe. In college years ago, I did a project in which I recited Annabel Lee to the instrumental version of We Have All the Time In the World from On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. The class was stunned, especially how the music matched the poem. Got an A in the class. I was going to do the Haunted Palace to Thunderball but felt Annabel Lee was a better choice.

It along with "The Raven" have become my absolute favorite pieces of literature outside of the Bible, since my wife passed away. I always liked these two poems, now I comprehend them, now I feel them, now live them. Thank you for this video. Both "Anabelle Lee" and the "Raven" cause me great pain. Yet, instead of running away from it, I am strangely drawn to it, as if the pain also brings the pleasure of her memory to mind. Even though the moon beams and stars rise, I can not ignore the "nevermore".

So, you get the chills because when you shiver your body temperature rises, causing a fever, which is your body's way of fighting infection. I went through this when I had pneumonia a couple of months ago, it was awful! You also shiver when you're cold, which is the body trying to warm itself up.

You've completely missed the genius and the glory of this poem. Poe was something of a trickster, and, having seen the darker side of 19th century America, he wasn't above poking fun at the Romantic fervor that had so captivated the elitist authors and literati of the time. The sing-songy rhythm lulls us into a fairytale setting about eternal love and devotion. . . as he proceeds to accurately describe a descent into madness with symptoms whose pathologies had not even been named yet. Look for them, and you'll find -- Delusions of grandeur, projection, obsession/compulsion, persecution complex, inferiority complex, paranoia, and perhaps a couple others. The meter moves from sadly slow to frantically accelerated a couple of times -- a nod to what we now call manic depression. The nighttime references refer to lunacy (derived from the word lunar), because people then (and now) have noted more insane behavior during full moons. Finally, he clearly says he lies down by Annabelle Lee IN her tomb. Necrophilia means an unhealthy love of the dead, not necessarily sex with a corpse. But this lovely little ditty that well-bred young men and women undoubtedly wept over all unawares is ultimately a poem about necrophilia. Well played, Mr. Poe. Well played!

"Annabel Lee" and "The Raven" were both written by Mathew Franklin Whittier, younger brother of poet John Greenleaf Whittier, and falsely claimed in a sort of 19th-century identity theft by Edgar Allan Poe. My paper, "Evidence that Edgar Allan Poe Stole 'The Raven' from Mathew Franklin Whittier" explains. It is downloadable at the following link. It can also be found by searching on the title on Academia.edu. www.ial.goldthread.com/MFW_The_Raven.pdf
