AARP’s LGBTQ+ Dignity series is released every one to two years. Aligned with previous studies, Dignity 2024 finds that many LGBTQ+ adults still worry about social isolation and support as they age. According to the Movement Advancement Project (MAP), “there are over 2.4 million LGBT adults over age 50 in the United States, and this number is expected to double by 2030.” Research consistently shows that queer older adults have different life experiences than their heterosexual and cisgender counterparts. LGBTQ communities are diverse in race, ethnicity, age, socioeconomic status, ability, and even in other ways. There is more to understand about how inequality and discrimination impact their quality of life across their lifespans. Historically, queer people have faced discrimination in every area of their lives, from employment to housing to healthcare. Research shows that LGBTQ people sometimes create strategies to avoid discrimination, such as going back into the closet to find suitable housing or forgoing essential healthcare, which can jeopardize their mental and physical well-being and even their longevity. The Queer God Squad thanks the AARP for sharing this vital information with the public and for their research and programming meant to address these issues. Let’s hear what these four senior Queer folks have to say about it.
