440 ex stage 2 hot cam. Heard a pop and now wont fire. Turns over fine. 1 rocker arm was tight and wouldnt drop on its own. Loosened it. Cam chain is super loose. Guessing the tensioner is bad? 0 starting issues to wont even attempt tk fire
With the new camshaft hot cams stage 2 that I put in my xr400, I noticed that the cylinder head was noisier as if the regulation was not working properly, what they say is 13mm and 15mm. What can be?
Ivan Martinez hot cams call for a larger valve clearance which causes more valve noise. From what I've found it seems normal. As long as it runs good and you know it's installed correctly I wouldn't worry about it.
I still dont understand why the stock cam has a decompression pin and the hotcams has nothing. Whats the fix? Also how do i know if my chain guard is bad or if the tensioner is bad?
The decompression makes them easier to start. If Honda didn’t use it they’d have a ton of hard start complaints. I’ve had more tensioners fail than chain guides so unless you have a lot of hours on the engine I would be inspecting the tensioner first.
me 400ex is ticking but it's not too loud i already changed the cam tensioner which was bad , then adjusted the valves . it's not as loud but i can still hear it any idea what else it can be ?
Double check the valve clearance and be sure you're using the correct feller gauge. I've seen many people confuse the metric with standard. Did you check the decompression system on the camshaft? If you're running a "hotcams" camshaft it could be due to the extra clearance used on those. They'll typically have a light ticking.
Maine Boat Guy yea when i bought the bike it was passed down from another owner and he didn't know what was done to the bike but i'm pretty sure it's been modified it has way to much power and i noticed it has a "big gun rev limiter" smaller sprocket and things like that. i'm not sure if it has a hotcams cam shaft. is there a way i can see if it has one ?
HI, I have the same problem, ticking at the top, around the head, new piston, new valves, new rod, adjusted the valves, changed tensioner and chain, tomorrow I check decompression on camshaft, do you solve the problem ??
This one I had done for a friend so he had only paid for parts. I'd guess you'd be around $500 typically for parts and labor depending on the actual labor rate.
i just did a rebuild on mine. put a new cam on it. now when i first adjusted it. it ran good. but SLAPPED like hell just like before... the RIGHT exhaust valve was STUPID loose...i adjusted where its supposed to be.. and now it wont run. will fire for a SECOND..i have to loosen that right exhaust valve way back loose THEN it will run... WHAT...THE...FUCK??
You have to roll the engine over one more time to top dead center when it's loose like that the decompression mechanism is making the right exhaust valve loose.
