This video shows how to change the fluid on most Honda Automatic Transmissions. This is done by using a 3/8 ratchet and about 3 quarts of Genuine Honda Automatic Transmission Fluid.
This particular video shows the fluid being done on a 2000 Honda Accord Coupe V6. All 6th generation V6 Accords are identical to the video. The 6th generation I4 Accords is done in a similar way, but the transmission drain bolt is on the passenger side.
*This video is a informational video only and any fluid change should be done on your own risk. I am not responsible for any damage.

Good video. These transmissions suffer from a design flaw, essentially rendering them prone to all kinds of failure. One way to mitigate this is to install a transmission cooler (simple bolt on kit takes 60mins) and put a filter between the oil lines. Then you can replace the filter, and keep the transmission at better temps, which will hopefully reduce the issues. $200 dollar investment.

Henry Thoreau just last week my little brothers 2000 Accord 4 bangers tranny gave up. 110k miles. Mine has 190k and it’s still going strong. Mine is a 2000 v6. I installed a tranny filter and instead of a cooler, I baby it, and also installed a switch to manually force the fans to turn on to help cool the tranny and engine in stop and go and hot weather when I’m not using ac. I also allow it to cool down when it’s idling. Not sure if it’s better than a. Trans cooler though. We also had a 03 odyssey a while back that failed at 185k

:( The dissappointment in your voice when it clunked after the change is sad. :( I would not be too upset, since seeing the color of the old fluid, it WILL take those 3 flushes to clean everything out and get back to spec. This was a great video!

Charity Zank for a full flush I would recommend 12 quarts but you would have to flush it 3 times using 4 new quarts each time after driving a couple of hundred miles in between. This allows fluid that is in the transmission to be moved to an area where it can be removed and replaced. Hope that helps.

Have you ever had the transmission service before this. That was pretty dark looking. Its good you plan on changing it out more frequently now. Honda has a dump and fill theory. If you stick to their recommended schedule enough of the old fluid come out for them to be happy. Honda claims not to have a filter but I found what looks like a filter mounted behind the radiator. You can also flush it by disconnecting the cooler lines and dump the one into a bucket while refilling fluid through the 17mm bolt. There a YT video on it check it out. Every time I bought a used car I change all the fluids. Maintenance goes a long way. I have a 2000 Accord EX V-6 and it shifts very nice.

When any car is cold the idle is high which causes a shake when shifting gears. Is like changing from neutral to drive with your foot on the gas pedal accelerating a little You'll feel a shake cus you are telling the car to move even before putting it on gear.

go for it.. just do it till the fluid is red over the course of a few months. don't drive fast or haul a heavy load.. thats where the tranny ultimately fails b/c of poor assembly.

I have a 1999 honda accord v6 coupe 3.0. When I bought it (for a really cheap price) the guy basically said that the transmission was done. I changed the oil, the radiator (since the previous one was blown) and did a few other things to it. Well during the summer I realized that I had to warm my car up for about 20 minutes before driving. Annoying yes. Necessary yes. I checked the ATF fluid levels and to my surprise it had gone down since I last checked it. I looked by the Driver's side wheel well and it turns out that there's a leak coming from the right side (towards the passenger side) of the transmission. I don't frankly know what it is, but as soon as I filled it to the required amount of transmission fluid, and warmed it up for about 10 minutes, it ran fine for a couple months. Now its acting up again and to be honest, I love this car. I just don't like the transmission that honda put in this and the amount of fuel that it consumes. If I have the time, I'm planning on dropping the transmission and replacing the transmission filter, solenoid, etc. Or maybe buying a rebuilt transmission and putting that in. I dunno yet.

my trans fluid is dark but not that dark. barely any metal shavings on the magnet for 150k miles at the time. my fluid is red though and on a paper towel it is pink. thats healthy right?
@CharlietoKind
@CharlietoKind 10 лет назад
the transmission, like you said, only clunks when the engine is cold/weather is cold. seems like because of the high idle.. during the summer, I was in a hurry and pressed the brake, grabbed the shift lever, and pressed the gas and shifted into reverse at about 1000 rpm and it made a clunk noise like it was cold
@thweepz
@thweepz 10 лет назад
I think you should be fine :). Mine does it too. I think it is due to the high idle. Usually I will let it run a bit that way the clunk isn't as hard. My mechanic said it was normal for these cars. I dont have the V6. Kuddos for keeping the original trans going! Those things aren't easy to maintain
@huntertawney593
@huntertawney593 10 лет назад
I think it's the torque converter not being up graded when they did the motor up grade on these cars ..Its what it seem to me to be because when I punch the gas it's got to make a full spin then pop and zoom zoom i'm off love the power of the v6 but that dam pop has just puzzled me!!
@CharlietoKind
@CharlietoKind 11 лет назад
I agree, especially the fact that these V6 Accords and 99-02 and some 03 odysseys didn't have the best tranny. I bought this car at in May of 12 @ 122,000 miles. From the color and the smell of the fluid, I agree the previous owner has never changed it. Currently I have 139,900 miles on it, and I have done this "flush"/change 5 times. It has not slipped once! We also own a 2003 honda odyssey that tows at it max 3500 lbs reg. and at 180,000. we have never changed the fluid! (my parents van)

Hi I work full time in an oil change and maintenance shop .........do fucking not kick the ratchet please ....if you strip it (high chance doing tht) we can't ever change it ...and it will cost you alot ....either grab with one hand and hit hand with other ....or take the loop end of a regular wrench put the circle end onto the ratchet handle and leverage pry ....always remember to "run gears" as we say at wrk tht means idle in each gear for at least 30 seconds do this in all gears a total of 3 to 5 times then check trans fluid level again and repeat if necessary

I've noticed in mine the slower you move your shifter into P N R or D4 it engages much harder into gear compared to sliding your shifter directly to the gear you intend on using in a some what fast motion to where its not try to actuate into every gear in between before the intial gear you need. I have an 01 accord ex v6 coupe. And for all you 98-00 guys the 01-02 radiators have built in trans coolers atleast for the v6's i know they do. Might be an easier solution possibly.

My wife and I purchase our 2002 Honda Accord EX (V6) in 2002, new. Fourteen years later, today is 07/27/2016, it has over 250K miles on it and, except for the recent jerking experienced sometimes when departing from a traffic light or stop sign, this car has run smooth as can be. I am willing to guess that not many other car manufacturers could top it.

keiandra thomas No, Keiandra; not yet. I drained the automatic transmission fluid (often referred to simply as ATF) and replaced it with Honda's recommended ATF in addition to a pint (+/-) of a transmission additive which is a thicker fluid and is supposed to smooth out the changing of gears. I don't remember the name of that product, sorry. That additive seems to have helped some but not enough. I've already visited a local transmission specialist to replace the transmission. We're looking at about $1,200 to $1,500 for a new transmission which is much more affordable than a new car; our Honda Accord still looks and operates like a new car, transmission being one of two exceptions. The other exception is the lights to the instrument panel don't work--other RU-vid entries cover this problem. I may wait until after the (2016) holidays to replace the transmission. Best of luck to you!

Hey Keiandra! Good to converse with you. A couple of additional comments for you. I don't think anyone would go wrong with purchasing a Honda Accord; they are very reliable provided common sense maintenance is given to them. Their reliability remind of the old VW Beetles; change the oil and tires at proper intervals, love them, and they will last forever. (Other maintenance is required, of course, but you get the jest of my comment--little maintenance required.) We purchased our Accord new, off the lot in 2002 so we know its maintenance history. You purchased yours as a second owner and, unless you know the previous owner(s), you haven't a track record upon which to judge its condition. Still, you have a good machine, in my opinion, as Hondas are excellent cars. One big, maintenance payout is better than 4 to 6 years of car payments for a new car (Not to forget the differences in car insurance, too.) even if you have to take out a loan or charge the repair to your credit card. That's our opinion and that's why we drive an older car, though I currently drive a 2013 Nissan Frontier truck which I/we, recently, paid off. I got rid of my 1999 Honda CR-V due to the piss-poor service of my local Honda dealer; they have lost the sales of two new vehicles to us due to their service department. My purchase of a Nissan, our first with Nissan, was more of a protest towards our Honda dealer. But, I transgress. Beware certain transmissions, even in new cars! When visiting a local transmission shop the other week, I learned that a certain transmission design results in horrible consequences. I took notes but cannot put my hands on it at this moment but when I find it, I'll notify you. I just "followed" you on Google+ so that I can send you this information. I'm not up to speed on social media nor how it works; don't really care. In fact, I don't "twit" and I don't "face!" Neither does my wife. That's why you'll find my accounts (RU-vid, Google+, and any others I may have) bare. Well, I follow a lot of RU-vid accounts but that's only because I want to give them support because I'm impressed with their work. Well if you have applied "TLDR" to this comment, I understand. You will hear from me anyway, soon as I find that piece of paper which contains my chicken scratch of notes on transmissions. Cheers!

Changing the fluid on my '02 this weekend. Mine does the same tell tale clunk so I know exactly what you were referring to. I've never done it on an Accord, and the previous Gen6 I owned was a 2.3L 5 speed. I love the V6. When the 4 speed finally goes I'm tagging in a 6 speed manual. I've watched several videos as a sanity check on the procedure and yours was one of them. Great information that was very useful. I have to admit, however, I lol'd at 3:50. Just gettin' her done and I can appreciate that. Just 2 questions as this post is 8 years old. 1) Do you still own your G6 and how many miles are on her? Mine is silver as well, although the paint is wrecked at this point. Mechanically she purrs like a kitten. 2) For the love of God, please tell me you have invested in some proper jack stands and ramps? Great video though. Cheers!

no it is not an easy job getting the mount is difficult you have to Jack your engine up off mount but before that you need to loosen other mounts not totally take off just loosen.let me give you some advice so you don't make the same mistake I did on 02 v6 coupe before jacking engine up unplug a.c. compressor and take your battery and tray out because when you jack the engine up your transmission line and a 350 trans solenoid is under tray.I broke my wire to compressor cause not unplugged and I smashed the solenoid and hardline so my car would not shift and a.c. did not work after and I had to go to junkyard. to replace all.all is good now good luck.you should probably loosen trans mountsnif not already broke.mine were broke prior to project. so I did not worry with it I just replaced them after motor mount were done

Great video, have you considered changing the transmission fluid filter or was that not necessary? I was thinking maybe that's why the fluid looked so dark after you put the new fluid in.
@CharlietoKind
@CharlietoKind 9 лет назад
Docktory its not necessary as the only filter on these cars are "lifetime" filters built inside of the transmission

I got a 1998 Honda Accord A/T and I have 144miles on it right now and I'm having a problem with acceleration. It runs great but when you shift it to D4 the acceleration is poor. My mechanic told me to do a transmission flush for about 5 times to take out the old oil and refill with honda genuine atf and run it for 2 miles and flush the new oil and refill it again with new atf and do it all over again. Is that the way that you do? to clean or flush out old oil inside the transmission? Thanks

Use a pipe for leverage on that ratchet if you don’t have a breaker bar or clearance issues cause you could potentially break the mechanism in that ratchet and it won’t work anymore

@CharlietoKind

it sounds like you have bad motor mounts.. mine do the same when i hit the gas really hard, it makes a popping sound, especially noticeable when going uphill from a stop and stepping on the gas hard.

I got this car new and noticed the trans at about 5000 miles was doing something wired and I keep the paperwork were I took it back and asked them to look at it They said cant find anything wrong!! Car now has 140,000 and it seems the pop is getting worse..I checked the mounts .. Just seen on the net there is a recall on the trans

Can someone please explain why would I do the drain fill drive x 3 method? That doesn't make sense, why would you drain and fill it three times? If you do that, then what, after 100 miles each 3 times, I'm good for next 90k miles or what? Just purchased an used 2002 accord ex coupe and I don't like it at all. Needs a lot of work, and I could tell that it's hesitating and shifting little hard..Maybe it's just me. I'm deaf, I only can tell by the feelings and the odometer displaying.
@CharlietoKind
@CharlietoKind 10 лет назад
these accords are getting older, and the shifts are harder, especially when when its cold. but for your question, the reason why you do it three times, is because when you drain the transmission fluid, its only the fluid in the transmission pan.. there is still old fluid in the torque converter and transmission itself. so when you replace the transmission fluid with new fluid, and start the car, the old fluid (in the torque converter and transmission) mixes with the new (in the transmission pan), making it dirty again. after three flushes, I would recommending changing it only once every 30,000 miles. I know the owners Manuel recommends 90k, but , thats under normal driving, not severe drivng which most drivers do.! hope this helps and go easy on the older honda transmissions.. very fragile.

Your draining out the hole system fully, there is small areas that and lines that you miss and for that reason there is that 3x method

dont we have to reppeat this process 3 times in order to flush?i think the user manual says so. confused. any one knows anything?
@CharlietoKind
@CharlietoKind 8 лет назад
The manual doesn't say anything about doing it 3 times. But that is what gets all the fluid out since the torque converter holds over half the fluid. You drain and fill once, when you drive around it mixes the fluid and you repeat for cleaner and cleaner fluid
@tomtwist4059
@tomtwist4059 8 лет назад
the manual does tells you to drain and fill 3 times inbetween short drivesw to do a complete flush

If you want to replace all of the oil in your transmission you need to drive the car and do this process several times. There is lots of Oil in the torque converter and valve body. The idea is to flush all the shit out of your transmission. I would drive about 10 miles and do this process three times. Oil is cheap and transmissions are expensive. Jackstands are super cheap at Walmart. Come on bro. You are Worth it. Jackstands are cheaper than a hospital bill or death.
