This was an incredible video. I was dreading doing the belt on my Beat but this video made it seem a little less daunting. Still a hell of a lot of work, but doable!
Thank you thank you. It is very tight. One of the rougher timing belt jobs I've done. I always read you had to pull the engine in the Beat to do it, but I thought that couldn't possibly be the case. I can tell you, it sure would have been easier with the engine out! LOL
Alright, now you need to do an engine drop vid before you sell the Beat so we can see the difference! Trying to decide which route is best, esp since I don't have a lift! Great vid!
I HEAR you! Beat has a deposit and pickup is scheduled next week. If I ever do a Beat again, I can tell you with certainty the engine is coming out. Lol. OMG. Tight quarters university
Lovely job, My mechanic just dropped the engine to get the belt done, but now I hear a loud whining noise that sounds like a supercharger whine. It might be the water pump is a bad unit or the oil pump failing so gona have him replace both, new waterpump is OEM this time and while at it. Replace all seals and gaskets, document the crankshaft and bearings, replace piston rings, replace motor mounts, replace gas tank, replace entire clutch assembly. Very very expensive service hours probably 2500- 3000$ worth but all preventative maintenance and age related issues I had planned being taken care of will make me very very happy :P
Yes as I got into it, I thought about dropping the engine/transmission out. But, so many people were asking if it could be done without doing so, so I wanted to show that it can, although a little more difficult. I can imagine that level of work you are having done is worth every penny!
@@rhd_ron spending as many thousands and thousands on a vehicle I won't get back is not worth it. But I know no other car exists out there that gives this kind of amazing driving experiences so I go way above and beyond to make sure nothing goes wrong, wether it be replacing the entire distributor since there had been cases of them randomly seizing up. To replacing the gas tank cause its 31 years old who knows how much rust is built up in there.
Hey, does your beat make a whining sound when the engine is hot at operating temperature? Some say that it is normal or might be. I managed to locate it maybe around the lower timing belt cover area. Maybe going to try to adjust the belt tension

This video was a great help! However, that annoying background music on your video was playing in my head during the whole procedure. MAKE IT STOP!!! A few things to add: Buy the very best LONG 14mm 6-point wrench you can find. Only use 6-point sockets on the engine mount bolts and nuts. Have one of those magnet retriever things handy for when that metal spacer retracts into the plastic engine cover while you are trying to reinstall the engine mount (no big deal just annoying). If your Beat has "valve clatter" THIS is the time to do the valve adjustment. Don't expect the camshaft and crankshaft timing marks to line up EXACTLY all by themselves. There's a little fudge factor involved. If one set of marks lines up and you can manually move the other pulley onto its timing marks WITHOUT moving the other pulley off its marks you are good to go. You couldn't do that if you were one tooth off. The Beat service manual lists the torque spec for the crank pulley bolt as 11.5 Kg-m or 83 lb-ft.

Yeah there is a lot of detail I could Go into, like how Honda made a hole in the frame of the Beat side chassis to accommodate the engine mount bolts Being removed for this job. Tried to keep it to what was required around general mechanic items. Thanks!
Will that kit work for the 96 honda today rs ... same motor as beat 656cc E07A MTREC... JA4 body ... don't need it yet but may as well order one for the future.. I do need to find a rear motor mount.. I can't find one ...
Did anyone else see an old stripped timing belt tooth at the crank pulley @ 18.24 at the top of the picture and @ 21.50 to the right hand side of the new belt? A little worrying. Where did it come from? Did the car have timing belt failure in the past? Also, did it get removed before building it back up?????
Hmmm, can't say that I see what you are talking about at those two specific times. This little truck was super low mileage and I did the belt just because you never know the history when you get these from Japan. The work was done and the truck has been on the road over a year now.
