crosstrainingenduro.com tractionerag.com Our Honda CB500X review - Honda's budget priced adventure bike that is a hoot on the road and easy dirt roads too. I own one. Commuting. And smooth dirt roads. Into serious adventure riding though? Look elsewhere... unless you deal with that exposed sump and radiator, low ground clearance, plus road oriented suspension and ergonomics. A seat height of 81cm (32 inches) for the Honda CB500X makes it brilliant for short riders. Remember the 2019 did get a bit taller due to that bigger front wheel though. 2019+ models 830mm (32.7 inches). Beginner rider, or new to adventure riding? The power delivery on the Honda CB500X is perfect: very linear and no surprises. Experienced riders enjoy it too, except for those expecting top end performance. I've also trawled piles of vids, reviews and forum posts to explore, the good, the bad and ugly points. Lets start with the good. The CB500X is so cheap! Like most Japanese bikes it's not made in Japan. It's actually made in Thailand, but it still features Honda's reliability at a bargain basement price. The Honda 250 Rally and Kawasaki 300 Versys are cheaper, but you get way more engine with the CB500X. It's great for road and easy dirt roads. Essentially the Honda CB500X is a road bike with a few mods to make it an adventure bike... just. The models up to 2018 probably slot in around here. The 2019 Honda CB500X models and on got the larger front wheel and a bit more suspension so slots in around here. It loves twisty mountain roads. This won't be your style of bike. It's extremely economical, and will get either one or two people around with a minumum of fuss... but you'll need more gear changing than a 650 of course. Remember too, this is only a 470cc engine. It seems Honda have started that stupid stupid European tradition of exaggerating their engine capacity. Sigh. The 2019 Honda CB500X picked up a bit more midrange power. The little Honda has good service intervals at 12000km for oil changes and 24,000km for major services. Okay, what's not good about the Honda CB500X? Generally Honda CB500X reviews indicate it is super reliable. The only obvious known issue is a small number of coolant leaks reported over the years. Causes mainly seemed to be various bolts not tightened correctly, and a few water pump failures. It's hard to find very recent cases so may all be fixed now. The Honda CB500X is cramped for taller riders. I'm well over six feet tall and had to fold myself into the bike. Easily fixed though. I installed the lower Knight Design footpegs, repadded the seat for $15 with some vinyl and furniture foam, then put in some Rox handlebar risers. The riding position on the Honda CB500X is very road bike oriented. Fine if that's your thing. But try standing to ride over rough ground and it's all set up wrong. Traditional adventure riders will find the footpegs are too far back, too high and the bars are too far forward. The Knight Design footpegs are further forward as well as lower so can alleviate this to some extent. And the Rox pivoting risers bring the bars back for an upright riding position. The Honda CB500X gearbox can be clunky when changing lower gears, especially on new bikes. It's made worse by quite low gearing too. Sports oriented riders will like the acceleration, but many adventure riders go one tooth higher on the front. Some even go two teeth up but you'll need to trim things a bit to fit a 17 tooth sprocket. The clunky changes from first to second are a lot better then. Some Honda CB500X riders have said their valves tightened up before the recommended 24,000km service. If you bike starts running rough keep this in mind. Most riders don't hit this issue though. Doing a lot of dirt with the Honda CB500X? The road oriented front fender is way too short. Buy a front fender extension to keep muck off the engine. The sump is very exposed, consider some form of protection there too. Doing a lot of dirt? You may want to install an extra flap to stop mud and dirt being sprayed over your rear shock. Our Honda CB500X review found the suspension is very ordinary, as you would expect on a budget priced bike. Any spirited riding on bitumen or dirt roads will find the limits very quickly. Get it modified, or just keep the speed down and it does an acceptably adequate job. If you do a lot of dirt roads there's a good chance you won't like the small 17 inch front wheel on the Honda CB500X 2018 and earlier models. Riders with small hands may find the Honda CB500X clutch lever is too far out, this can be fixed with aftermarket levers. Some riders and pillion passengers report the seat is too hard for extended rides. I find it fine for a morning ride, but yes you may want an aftermarket seat if doing all day rides. Finally a very stupid design flaw on the Honda CB500X.

Great review, but most for people looking for an used up to 2018 model. The 2019 has got some great updates that may should be focused a bit more, I don't find the gearshift "clunky" on the 2019, it is perfect. The engine has also got some more torque. The new slipper clutch is super easy to operate, the handlebars is improved a lot too. You mention the new 19 inch front, but it also got longer travel suspension which in sum makes it better off road :-)

Rally Raid stage 3 conversion kits are available for these bikes that really address most of the issues holding this bike back for true adventure riding. The standard AT is bigger and heavier but honestly with the seat in the low position it's not much taller in the saddle at all. (5'7" 30" inseam) Pretty amazing that it has so much more travel and clearance. The difference between a street bike in "adventure" style and a bike built for "adventure".

Great little review, would be good to see how you went about your seat modifications, had a chuckle at your bar risers, considering your other video on suggesting not to put bar risers on bikes... Have a 2016 CB500X here in Thailand, I didn't realise it was 12,000 kilometer oil changes, I've been doing it every 4-5000klms? Shame about the suspension hey! Ah well, probably kept me alive not being able to go too hard in the Twisties!
@crosstrainingadventure
@crosstrainingadventure 3 года назад
personally i would stick with your current oil changes, edgar. i usually do them twice as often on adventure and road bikes as it simply seems to long an interval otherwise. sometimes i suspect the manufacturers are pushing those figures to make the bikes look more maintenance-free? i don't have any evidence for that but i know many of us feel the same way.

Max, the part that has more known issues on the 500X are usually the kits that change out the entire footpeg bracket to a dirt stance - even Rally Raid hasn't cracked that nut quite yet (they don't sell one, but others do). That said, Jenny Morgan of Rally Raid says she very rarely stands except on the most aggressive of dirt when riding her fully-modded 500X, so I might take that approach and not stress the pegs.

If you could only have 1... CB w/ 120/90/17 front tire or DR650? The obvious CB for more pavement, DR for more offroad... but having never ridden either not sure which one covers their lesser area better. Lots of grey area but will the CB cross over into the offroad (nothing crazy) better than the DR handles pavement. (reasonable comfort is the concern) Typical day riding 1 to 1.5 hrs out to the fun stuff and then of course the same ride back. See a well farkled DR local that I may go check out.

Everyone would have a different opinion Jeff, but I don't think there's much overlap at all. The CB500X just feels like a road bike with the smallest possible mods to make it acceptable on a dirt road. Aren't they still made in Japan but assembled in Thailand? Sad how hard it is to find a full japanese assembled bike

It's often only the more expensive models that are made in Japan but it's interesting to see some like the DR650 are still made in Japan.

Very hard to say, depends on your torso/leg length and other factors.... chances are you'll be okay. Or might just want lower footpegs. Just sitting on the bike in a shop isn't much of a guide either, I felt good on the bike there. But five minutes of riding after I bought one, I knew I'd made a mistake!

@@crosstrainingadventurewith the full Rally Raid kit how well do you think these would do off-road? Mostly I commute/adventure tour, but I would also like something that can do some dual sport trail riding nothing too crazy and I don't need to be the fastest. I have a mostly Rally Raid CB500X just came without the 17" spiked rear (broken). Love your Chanel btw. I think you have one of the best for this sort of thing out there.

@@crosstrainingadventure LOL Fair enough but it might be wise to wait and speculate on the possible-yet very belated appearance of the x 400 before forking over cash. Why oh why did Kawasaki use the 300 instead of going with the lighter and more powerful 400 that was presumably already available?
@crosstrainingadventure

I haven't heard anything about the XR400 return but that could be good... as long as they don't slap heaps of extra weight on it! It is weird how the mid sized bikes are so neglected nowadays.

HONDA, MAKE A LIGHTWEIGHT 650 VERSION, GET RID OF THE UGLY PARTS AND MAKE IT LOOK LIKE A SCRAMBLER!!! nobody is buying these to do rallies, so putting rally fairings on them is DUMB! Oh, and adjustable suspension that can adjust all the way to off-road capable would be great!!!

The water pump drops oil, not coolant, from 560km point. Handelbar wobble from new and the abs disc is touching the fork. In one year and 3500 km, I very close to sell it. I have a 2021 model. I thing Honda is a peace o shit those days. Now the handel bar wobble is worse, and the warranty doesn't give a shit on the customers. Maybe in other places is different, but in my country this is the situation.

Asta nu este o veste bună, Andrei. 🤔 The CB500X is made in Thailand but generally the quality control is very good. The dealer won't fix the bike under warranty? Did you contact the Romanian distributor/head office? Perhaps they might respond?

@@crosstrainingadventurei went to the warranty, they change the gaskets, but the pump still drops oil, and they tell they will solve the wobble isue, but they don't want to realy solve it. Now i'm wayting for a new pump, for over 3 weeks. I call them 4 days ago, they said that they will call me back, and thwy did not. Tomorrow i will go to them and see what I can do. Because today I put some weight in my top case, and the wobble is worse. On my old bike, a gs500e i used to put the same weight and I didn't had any problem.

@@Yowzoe I have sorted it with new tires, new stem bearings. But not on warranty. Honda did not want to change the tires even if they were garbage from factory. Only the water pump. @@crosstrainingadventure The gen 1 shared the sv650s engine but that’s about it. The gen 2 uses the engine out of the Gladius. The VStrom is definitely more street oriented than say a GS but the Honda is even more street oriented than that. (In my opinion)
