Honda guys are so smart that they made the suspension fully adjustable for a reason, if the standard setup works for everyone then having adjusters will not make sense. It's not rocket science and it's something that every rider should know how to do it on its basics.

Listened to this advice and my bike was bumpy as hell. I'm 220 without gear and probably 230 with. I hardened the suspensions much more and more I ride smoother. Counter intuitive I know. But previously every little bump felt like a canyon

Finally - that's what I always say! No matter how good you think you are at suspension, the guys at Honda are better at it. Every time. Bought a 600F five days ago - which is why I lurk around the CBR600 videos - and the very first thing I did was set everything back to factory on the suspension. Although it didn't really ride badly at all with strange settings when I took it home, so I guess the adjustments are all made within a viable, usable window after all. And all that preload adjusting for weight - no! Get a spring to fit your weight if it's a bit more than normal ( > ~200 pounds ), then ride the preload in the same 2-out-of-7 standard notch! Don't crank it to 6-out-of-7 on the road unless riding with the absolute maximum weight allowed - which I believe was the full bike + 189kg for the 600F. But even then I'd leave it on 5-out-of-7 as long as nothing bottoms out.

don't listen to this old fart. He's blatantly wrong. forget the manual and adjust the suspension to your own weight and riding style.

Setting depends about many things... standard settings can't be good for every rider, preload is adjusting by weight of a rider, oil in shock and forks getting thiner by mileage and compresion and rebaund need to be adjust, so standard setting can't be good after eg. 10000miles, also depend on riding stayle and level of skill.. Standard setting is good refrent point but it's dosen't mean that is the best setting for every rider... Bike set up is very hard to adjust to be sutiable for every condition, to every rides...

So you are saying that the factory has set this suspension up for any sized rider?!? So if a little girl (100lbs) rides the bike or a fat guy with (300lbs) sits on it, the stock factory set up is best. Now clearly in my example you would need to replace the springs, but the point is that adjusting the pre-load needs to be done based on the riders weight in order to get a good rider sag. All that being said, going back to the factory settings is certainly a good starting point, but by no means the right or even less so, the best settings. The only difference between setting up a bike for the track or the street is that you will go with a much harder setting for the track than the road. Also, it might not be as crucial to have it dialed in perfectly on the road, as forces are generally much weaker on the street than the track

@HooligansMx
@HooligansMx 2 года назад
This is technically wrong because it depends on your body weight and tire etc if your over like 100lbs you shouldn't use this method. At 210lbs I had to change my springs front and back and have shop that really knows there shit help dial it in knowing your body weight and it was 100% worth it my bike is now the most comfortable smoothest riding rocket Ive ever been on and I've never had traction issues either
@kirkdunn1379
@kirkdunn1379 2 года назад
correct.....not everybody is the same weight and ability......you should start out on std settings and make sure they are set to std, even from the dealership they may be off......alot of tuners are fullof shit i will give this dude props on that......do your homework find reputable tuner if needed.......for majority the stock suspension is fine, play with the clickers if bike feels weird (thats why they are there)......if your light or heavy get appropriate springs.....get the bike balanced is most important thing, the clickers are just fine tuning......good suspension makes huge difference......keep your stuff maintained and tires are also very important as well as pressure ........but yeah its not rocket science

@TheOldMechanic 3 года назад
Hi, oww yes absolute, but you have to look in your owners manual what for your bike the standard settings are. If your weight is higher then about 80 kg, I would put the spring preload (front & rear) 1 click / turn stiffer. 🏍 👨‍🔧
@MrMedicusNeo
@MrMedicusNeo 3 года назад
PLEASE don't do it like this! This can bring you in trouble putting "booknumbers" in an older bike, even don't knowing wheigt, riding ability of the rider and the environment! Even on a New bike this will not work, this are just numbers but for what riding style etc??! Go to a tuner or a person who knows about suspension and riding performance:)
@TheOldMechanic
@TheOldMechanic 3 года назад
@@MrMedicusNeo Hi thank you for your comment. I absolute don't agree with you and I explain why that is. At first I allways go according what the official Factory Service Manual tells you for the standard settings. The standard suspension setting are allways THE golden rule to set up the suspension. When the designers 'tells' you about what the standard settings are, they come to that conclusion after a lot of days on their factory track, and according to the test riders feedback a standard seting for the suspension is set, so to say. The standard setting is absolute perfect for daily rides (roads). Its a different story when you go with your bike on a circuit, there the asfalt is perfect, with no bumps holes.. Those guys at the (Honda) factory are not stupid you know and when ever they design a new bike there is a lot at stake.. But ofcourse you are free to go to the specialised suspension guru's and leave your money there. My channel is about doing your own motorcycle maintenance with knowledge that I collegted in the previous (over) 40 years. Greets from the old mechanic
@MrMedicusNeo
@MrMedicusNeo 3 года назад
@@TheOldMechanic thanks. Golden settings don't exist in the real World, and I don't say that honda is "stupid". But you are definitly wrong doesnt matter how many years of experience you have. You can "tune" your bike on your own when knowing how to do it the right way. People spend hundrets of Dollars for exhausts and other stuff. So its ok to spend maybe 50-80 dollars setting the bike correct. :) have a nice day (I do suspension settings so I know what I'm talking about).
@TheOldMechanic
@TheOldMechanic 3 года назад
@@MrMedicusNeo We never agree and thats okay with me. I stopped arguing a long time ago with suspenision setting 'guru's simply because thats the way they earn their money. I allways stick to the Factory Service Manual, and inthere is the the Standard suspension setting, and the best way to go. Have a nice day, greets from The Old Mechanic.

Hi I’m just wondering if you could please do a video on putting the fairings back on a 03 Honda cbr 600rr thank you
@David..
@David.. Год назад
Never really seen any of these gurus make it that complicated to be honest. Seems they set the pre-load for a set mm of race and static sag and then adjust rebound and compression dampening with the rider on and off the bike and send the rider to test it out and then tweak based on what they like. Maybe it’s different in Europe than here in the states but lots of people just ride their bikes in the twisties only and bias towards a more track set up.
@jkljkl218
@jkljkl218 Год назад
The biggest difference is that that is for track. Everyone has a track set-up and everyone has a street set-up. Not every street is made the same so the main goal is comfort + as much performance you can safely get without putting on extra stress on the suspension and other bike components. If you run track all the time, by all means, keep your track suspension set up on, but when you ride on a regular road, then set it up for a softer setting. If you ride the twisty roads, then slightly stiffen up your suspension but also leave enough room for when you get off the twisty roads. It's all a balance and there is nothing that's a fit all type of situations set up, ya just have to swap depending on your situation.
@riltjd
@riltjd 3 года назад
I must say usefull video however your comments at the start are not accurate. You give a baseline that would work for a average weight rider e.g. 70-80kg with e.g medium-advanced skill level. However ONE setup for everyone does simply not work. Everyone has a different riding style/level/and weight at which having your suspension set up to you is definitly not "a show" as you call it, but instead educated drivers trying to improve their driving. Thanks for the video for a solid baseline which im sure a lot of newer people will appreciate but please dont deter them from going further into the topic! Ride save!

is there anyway to lower the seat height without buying a lowering bracket. i'd id prefer to sit a little lower to the ground just so my feet can be flatter, i really love this bike.
@mikevlogs4501
@mikevlogs4501 3 года назад
The seats are so thin already it's hard to really do that. You can lower the front end just a tad. Like not even visually noticable. That will help you with your initial tip in going into the curves as well. Ask AMA racers they raise the rear of the bike an 1" and lower the front a tad on some of those bikes.

I have the same issue. Have you found anything yet? I thought adjusting the spring would help lower it.

What is the web page that you use to see the workshop manual? It seems that you have a lot of information there !!

Is it applicable to cbr1000rr 2005 model? Same suspension adjusters
@red-k2048
@red-k2048 3 года назад
yes, but you might wanna go online and check the exact amount of turns, there can be a slight difference. Just look up, bike model/year stock suspension factory settings :) The way you do it however is the same. :D

Subscribed!! great content!! Keep it up!! I have a question for you!! I also have a 2010 1200 GS and I was wondering if it is possible to put a suspension (front and rear) on it from the GS Adventure of the same year. I don't have leg length problems! ;-))

Hi OverKill.. good question ! What I do if this was my bike. I would first write down the settings that your bike is on now. Then follow my video and turn it to those standard settings, go for a ride and see if for yourself if thats an improvement. If not you can allways go back to the settings it was on. Hi Noorazman, I looked up the settings for your Kawasaki GTR1400 (2007) For the front fork the standard Rebound Damping Force Adjustment: First turn it fully clockwise (hard). Then ANTI clockwise to the 5th click.. But with your weight I would start at: the 3th click. THEN For the front fork spring preload: The standard is: Standard: 14 mm high. But with your weight I would start at 9 mm high. For the rear shock absorber setting: First turn it fully clockwise (hard). The standard Rebound Damping Force Adjustment 1 1/4 turns ANTI clockwise position. But with your weight I would start at: 1 turn ANTI clockwise. (The rebound adjusting screw in on the lower side of the shock absorber) Then for the rear shock absorber spring preload: First turn the knob all the way to the anti clockwise position.(soft) Then the 12th click clockwise (standard) But with your weight I would start at: the 25th click clockwise. Then take your bike for a ride and feel how your Kawasaki rides. From what you expirience you can make some fine tunings. Hopefully this helps you ! Please let us know.
