Tour of my 2009 Honda Civic Stealth Camper Setup. I break down how I constructed the build and how it gets put together inside the car.
#camperconversion #DIYbuild #stealthcamper
I've been using this setup for the past year and spent a total of 21 nights living in the car. It has everything that's in an RV with exception of a toilet! Build includes running water, power, solar, refrigerator, "kitchen" area, and ample space for storage. The setup is completely removable and doesn't permanently alter the structure of the car.
Specific Gear Mentioned:
Coleman Butane Stove
Inflatable Boat (LWD by KLYMIT)
Hammock Tent (REI Quarter Dome Air Hammock)
Versa-Brella
Jackery 500
DIY Reflectix Window Covers (Shoutout to my cousin Chris for sewing!)
12v powered cooler/fridge by Alpicool
100 Watt Folding Solar Panel
2.5 Gallon Water Tank
RV 12v Pump

That's an interesting Idea for a lightweight dead beater conversion, just completely strip it down to the shell, convert the engine bay to storage/ cooking center, if you could make it weather/vermin tight/theft resistant..

Yeah like mark said if you get that down to bare bones it could be really spacious even cutting unnecessary frame work an replacing with( I know it ain’t cheap)slight weld work to form as flat a floor as possible thing would be sweet and tint the windows as dark as u can’t because it isn’t a car anymore haha

A lot of ingenuity in your setup. I'm curious: Is the 100W solar panel very effective back there? I have a Jackery myself, but have not added solar since I wasn't confident that it would be worthwhile from inside the car. Take Care!
@jaroddclark
@jaroddclark 2 года назад
Thank you! You were right to hold off. The solar doesn't end up doing much through the window (~12-15 Watts) and I mostly use my car inverter to recharge the Jackery during the day. I'm thinking of ways to move the panels onto the roof, I think they'd be much more effective there.

LMAO ! This is crazy ! Why not take your passenger seat out for more storage or whatever ? Damn! I love it though!
@jaroddclark
@jaroddclark 2 года назад
Thank you! I've thought about this a bunch. I've ended up leaving the seat in so that I have the capability for an extra passenger. I think also taking the passenger seat out would make the car less stealthy when I'm in the city. Good observation though, it is the biggest space in the car that I I've neglected to use to its full potential. I'll be working on improving the build over the winter and this will be top of the list!

@jaroddclark 2 года назад
Nice! As long as the 2x2's were made out of a stronger type of wood, I imagine you could. I'm not a carpenter, so I tend to overbuild structurally to ensure things will be durable, which is why I went for the 2x4s. Since the build doesn't attach to the car, there is a bit of play in the entire thing. When I've been going over bumps and backroads, it is likely under stress and I've felt better about having the 2x4s.

The plan, unfortunately, would be to take out everything to gain access. Would’ve taken a very long time, but luckily never happened on a trip.
@YouStillNeedToSleep
@YouStillNeedToSleep 11 месяцев назад
First you would hate it. Second, you would have the least fun getting everything out just to reach the spare tire. It's a good idea to do "emergency drill" and get used to moving things out of the way fast.
@ev6377
@ev6377 2 года назад
hi, this is nice. do you have to remove those 2 back parts to get the tire? or just the left side may do?
@jaroddclark
@jaroddclark 2 года назад
Honestly, when I first built it I just hoped I wouldn't ever get a flat and kept the wrench needed to disassemble it in the car all the times. I ended up getting a flat last winter and I ended up just removing the contents around the spare and removing the bolts that held the piece in place. I didn't even need to remove the wooden pieces at all, I just lifted it up and there is enough room to (awkwardly) slide the spare out.

Cool! I’d love to see how your build is coming along. While building, I built it out one piece at a time. I wanted to make sure the build fit like a glove. I don’t really use the panel much anymore but it seemed to cut down the wattage by about 40% even in direct sunlight. It’s possible newer solar panels could be better, not quite sure

I’m about 6’1” and measured the bed portion to be exactly right. If you’re fine with pushing the drivers seat a bit farther forward for sleeping mode, there should be no issue with extending the top flip-out portion of the bed by another few inches.

I got the idea from this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fELaecRQ104.html Automotive carpet (mentioned in the video) is thinner and can be applied with a strong spray adhesive. So worth it IMO, it makes all the difference when it comes to sound & appearance.

Neat build. What inspired a 4 piece platform that is bolted together? Likewise any concerns with the frame sitting in your spare tire cavity?
@jaroddclark
@jaroddclark 2 года назад
Thanks! I knew I didn't need the entire width of the car for the bed portion and when designing it, I felt it'd be easier to have these sections separate. Also, it adds structural stability to the entire build without bolting it down to the car. Each piece is just large enough to fit inside on its own and when bolted together, there is very little play. As for the spare tire cavity, it doesn't concern me much. Most of the weight of the rear platforms rests on the crossbar under the attachment points.
@jasonvictor1798
@jasonvictor1798 2 года назад
@@jaroddclark That makes sense. For my corolla I'm leaning towards a 3 pc platform with 2 in the backseat and 1 for the trunk. At 4:34 - is that simply 2 shelfs on the left side? I'm not sure what their function is if it's anyting but a shelf. Also how come you didn't put your water tank closer to your kitchen area?

Hey man great job! Do you have the dimensions for all of this and the schematics? I have a 2010 Honda Civic Ex Sedan which I'm planning on converting into a "camper" by building a platform bed but so far out of all the videos I've seen no one really explains how they made the build. I never work with tools or wood so I don't have the first clue of what I'd be doing. Any help would be appreciated.
@jaroddclark
@jaroddclark 3 года назад
Thank you! When I built it, I never had a full version of "plans" or "schematics" lol, I am fairly new to woodworking as well. In order to make everything fit right, I built each piece out one-by-one. I built the drawer structure first, and once that was in place, I could measure out the empty space beside it and use that measurement for the width of the lower portion of the bed. I'd be happy to take some measurements and put together a rough diagram if you'd be interested in that! Best of luck with your build!

Removing the back seats took out a good bit of weight, but I'm sure that my extra stuff doesn't help the gas mileage. However, this car is pretty fuel efficient to begin with, so any changes in mpg have been fairly insignificant. I think the last time I took a long road trip I was getting 32-35mpg highway. Not sure what mpg I had before I converted the car, but I think it was pretty similar.
