Honda Civic Type R Driving Modes. What's the Acceleration Difference?
The Honda Civic Type R (FK8) has three drving modes. Comfort, Sport and +R. Each adjusts the suspension and steering, making everything firmer, sharper and more focused. Comfort, is the perfect choice for long cruises. Sport is the default mode and generally where I spend most of my time and +R suited to the track. On top that, the performance is also altered, from a little lacking in Comfort mode to slightly frantic in +R mode.
A little annoyingly, Honda doesn't give you any personalisation within these driving modes, it's these three choices and that's it. Personally, I would like the to have the choice as there are definitely circumstances where the +R throttle response coupled with the Sport steering and suspension setting would be ideal, particularly on British B-roads.
It got me thinking. Just how much of a speed gain is there between the three modes. On some cars I've found the 'Sport' button can be a little bit of a gimmick and it doesn't really do much accept make it feel a bit more alert. So, we know the Civic Type R definitely feels more alert with each setting but how significant is that mode when it comes to in great acceleration.
I thought I'd put it to the test. Now, this isn't the most scientific test, there are no gadgets monitoring all this, just me and timer when editing so it probably won't be 100% accurate to the 100th of a second but it will give you a pretty decent idea of the differences.
I also didn't bother with 0-60 timing. Simply because I couldn't find a safe place to do it and it can be influenced by my own ability rather than that of the Civic itself.
I decided to try the Hondas three driving modes when in motion. The first test is 30-40mph in 3rd gear and the second is 40-70mph in 4th gear.
So, here it is, the Honda Civic Type R FK8 Driving mode acceleration differences.
Let me know what you think.

There isn't lag - it's programmed boost threshold - the ECU keeps the torque request down below 3k as the tiny turbo can make enough torque to snap the rods. Start the runs at 4k and the "lag" you are talking about won't be there especially in 3rd+ as Honda limits power in 1st and 2nd Lol As far as the stock engine being too much - my R makes 640bhp - starts in +R and I have it set to about 420bph in 1st, 500bhp in 2nd and 640bhp in 3rd+ .....will easily do 296kmh which is the gearing limit currently on the stock 4.1 final drive - the new Type R uses a 3.8 final drive which would open the car up to well over 320kmh but I prefer the stronger acceleration from the 4.1 for now. Cheers from the United States 🇺🇸

Thanks for the feedback and info. I wondered if something like that was going on with the boost. I’m all about the power, however the speed this car can build in standard form does mean you’re hitting speed limits on any mildly spirited drive. How do you still have a license with 640bhp! 😂 You’re car sounds awesome!!!

I just became the proud owner of a 2021 Type R ! Coming from a very fast mustang gt 10R80 auto (didn't own it long as i found myself very bored driving auto) but before that i owned a highly modified Veloster N which was fully customizable! I certainly feel you're frustration on not being able to have any customizable options. That being said though as great a car the N was/is the Type R is in a different universe when talking about build quality, interior, and top end performance! My N was proper fast but would always fall flat on its face up top. The R just keeps pulling and pulling hard to redline and its just glorious.

I'm driving most of the time in comfort mode, switching temporarily to sport or +r mode for fun sections of the roads. Most b roads are too bad for the harder damper settings, so it gets annoying for me after a while if in sport mode. I really like the difference between comfort and sport (+r is not so different from sport). It's like driving a different car if you switch to one mode after driving for a long time in the other mode. Comfort softens the whole driving feeling, it feels like falling into a relaxing chair. While switching to sport mode makes it feels so engaging like a race car. I think that's one of the reasons the car never gets boring, and it's been 3 years since buying it. Another nice thing is the quicker Rev matching response in +r mode. It really rewards (and challenges) you for quick shifting. Individual settings would be nice of course (anybody else who likes the display in +r mode the most?). The factory settings are rather well balanced though. Sharp throttle response in combination with softer dampers was my main wish but if I think twice today I would say that the damper setting of comfort mode feels so soft and lazy it wouldn't really suit to a sportier driving experience.
@RemoveBeforeLaunch
@RemoveBeforeLaunch 3 года назад
Interesting to hear your thoughts and I agree on all of them. I generally find myself switching between Comfort and Sport but rarely get into +R. The car does seem lethargic in Comfort but it is perfect for just cruising around when you're not in a rush or pushing on. Honda have judged the 3 setups nicely but I would love the option to use +R on the throttle and Sport for the suspension. I think the would be the perfect combination for a British B-road thrash. And, of course, the display would look better;-)

So I tried the car on track recently (Castle Combe) and it was brilliant... way faster than me... I'm not brave enough. I used R mode. The rev matching is brilliant, way better than I could do. But even me not getting it right out of the last corner it was still up over 130 into Avon Rise... which felt enough!!! Watch Fifth Gear video to see how it should be done with Jason Plato driving. Interestingly he comments that he finds it too stiff in R mode, stiffer than a a touring car (and he should know). Put it this way, I never feel tempted to use R mode on the road...

Awesome! Good man for getting on track. It's a great road car but it defintely feels like it wants to be on track but you need to be a brave man to get it to the limit, as you say. I watched Plato, was interesting to hear his thoughts on the setup. I've tried R mode on a local, new bit of tarmac, and it is pretty stiff and generally not really suited for our great British potholed roads.
@vasekvi
@vasekvi 2 года назад
I drive in +R all the time unless the road is a bit rough. When the road is very rough I drive in comfort mode. If I could pick and choose elements from each mode, it would be the responsiveness of the throttle and rev matching from +R mode with the damping and steering of Sport mode. The rev matching is the main reason I use +R most of the time. When I switch to my Sport Cup2 tires, the steering effort for sport mode already feels like +R mode.

It was a bit of an eye opener seeing the final acceleration timings when we edited this. It's not the most scientific test ever run as I wasn't using any timing gear. However, when editing the shots I could get a pretty accurate time. What was revealed does corollate pretty well with how it feels. With Comfort mode feeling pretty sluggish and Sport and +R definitely feeling more alert although I wasn't expecting quite such a difference between the three. To be honest, most new cars are over priced. As consumers are being pushed towards financing cars rather than buying cars, price tags are 🚀 Which is why I rarely buy a new car. A good, low mileage used car that’s lost a chunk of its initial value makes more financial sense.
