Hey Jake Thanks for all you do. Your expertise has helped me and I’m sure many others immensely. Question, I have an 1982 Honda generator that needs a new ignition coil and condenser. It has points. All are mounted under the flywheel. Those parts are no longer available. I’d like to switch it over to an electronic ignition system. Do you have any advice on that process? I don’t want to throw in the towel and let it win. Cheers
@EliminatorPerformance
@EliminatorPerformance 2 года назад
Cut the wire off from the points and order a "solid state" coil for it. Probably can get them on Amazon or eBay! We upgrade all the time on customers old equipment!

Thanks for responding Jake. I’ll definitely look into that. It’s been sitting in my garage for almost a year. It’ll be nice to see it running again. Much appreciated.

Question: I got a tach so I can set speeds at a professional level when I restore equipment. I've easily been able to find specs for things like chainsaws. I just got a Ryobi BP 42 backpack blower tuned really well (after cleaning out the carb, which seems to have been the problem with a screen clogged with paraffin) and no amount of Googling turns up any specs. I assume the Low is probably around 3000 RPMs, give or take a couple hundred, but have no idea what the High RPMs should be. I suspect it won't be nearly as high as a chainsaw and maybe in the range of a string trimmer but I really want to set it just right so I protect the equipment no matter what. Any suggestion as to an approximate High end range? Even better, could you direct me to a source for that information? Right now I have the High set at around 7000 and the Low is set at around 2700 and those seem to be the sweet spots. Of course I've backed off on the High end to not run too lean, but the adjustment on this machine is very tweaky and I could be off because I just don't have enough experience to know exactly what it should sound like, even though I do know what four-stroking sounds like on a chainsaw. Thanks a lot for reading!

It the OLD MAN from EP here Rein. What i have found in many service manuals is the low rpm on most blowers is 2700 to 3000 rpm but they never specify a high maximum rpm because the blower wheel is continually absorbing the power. Stilh for example calls for going to full throttle and using the high screw to achieve maximum smooth running to drop the rpm 100 from the highest point provided you can check the rpm with a tach, then going 1 turn leaner from that position. The biggest issue with any two stroke as you well know if going too lean and causing damage to the engine. I do not have a specific site for Ryobi.

Wayne Stefinashen OLD MAN - Thanks so much for your most helpful response! I did hear from one other about the fact that blowers are already at full load and now it makes perfect sense to me. Re: the Stihl info, that seems at least like a reasonable starting point, although one full turn in the lean direction does seem like a lot. That said, I’m guessing idle screw angles at the bottom end as well as thread pitch and orifice size may differ widely from one manufacturer to another, so I’ll use that adjustment and keep and ear on how it sounds. Hoping to come up with an IR temp gauge sometime so I can really tell where I’m at. Thanks again!

@@EliminatorPerformance I have a lawnmower that I played with last year in the Fall. It hardly has any hours on it and is almost new. I have cleaned the carb twice, but it still will only barely run if I partially block the air intake with foil tape! I did remove and clean the filter from inside the tank. I now have an ultrasonic cleaner and I am anxious to get after it again (once winter is over!) and get it sorted out! I put it away for winter, and now I can't get at it! :(. This was a good video to go through the steps though!

Another good video Jake. The fuel system is more than tank and carb. Fuel filters often get overlooked. The 87 fuel we get here in southern Ontario has too much ethanol for our climate changes. Stay Safe. Rick

Try using K100 gas additive and your water-in-gas issues will disappear, great stuff. I use it in my two Honda generators , my Honda lawnmowers and my John Deere riding mower, never had an issue with water in the gas. I use 89 octane here in NC.
@EliminatorPerformance
@EliminatorPerformance 2 года назад
We use K100S+ and are a dealer here in Canada, we have to use 91 because it's the only fuel that's ethanol free. No water in this one, but the Ethanol is nasty.

Ok. I think this is one of your best videos. Not sure if it’s because I have this tank on my Honda snowblower, or because the diagnosis was in real time. But thank you for these videos. You do these on your cellphone? Or a dedicated camera? Top notch. Great. A+ and happy new year.

Thanks for the kind words! I use my cellphone most of the time, set to 1080p/60frames per second when recording. The quality of video and audio are great for indoor POV style filming like this. When I need 3rd person shots, I set up a cam corder on a tripod.

Do manufacturers install similar filters in plastic tanks?
@EliminatorPerformance
@EliminatorPerformance 2 года назад
Yes I know MTD has an in line style filter that sticks into the outlet tube of the fuel tank, and Honda generally uses this "fuel joint assembly" but manufacturers like Briggs and others don't use them as often. Sometimes you'll see a small screen on the inside of the fuel tank that is not replaceable.

Yes, but time consuming, and costly for these small engine repair fixes. At the price of a few filters, it's easier to just keep replacing them. I do not like metal tanks for this reason lol
