Stock Honda belts are very high quality. I would gamble that 120K mile OEM Honda belt would last longer than a brand new aftermarket belt. Honda tensioner is also very high quality. If it needs replacement, its almost always going to be due to the bearings in the pulley itself. So you can just replace the pulley on the stock tensioner. Better yet, buy a 6203 bearing (universal size) and replace just the bearing inside pulley (Amazon, maybe $10). Make note of how far old pulley is pressed into pulley Press old bearing out, new bearing in. Note, only ever press new bearing by its outer ring, never inner (old bearing who cares, do whatever). Find a socket that matches the bearing outer ring size to use to press bearing. Find a larger socket the bearing could fit into (or use sort section of PVC pipe, etc - Can buy a PVC 'coupler' from Home Depot). Use the larger socket or pipe to support pulley. Make sure pulley isn't touching ground, fully supported by socket or pipe. Use a press, or carefully with hammer, press old bearing out, new in, stopping when matches how far in old bearing was. Note, bearing in freezer overnight can help shrink it for easier press fit.
Thanks for this video. Big help. Just want to point out that a 19mm wrench also fits the nut on the tensioner. The zip tie trick was awesome. I used two for safety. Thanks again.
This is so helpful. I got 85k out of my belt when it started slipping. The tensioner pulley has been very noisy when cold since almost new. I'm finally taking care of both.
Thanks for the tutorial. I have about 355,000 mi on my 2012 Fit and am replacing the serpentine belt and spark plugs for the first time today. I believe I’m getting my money’s worth out of this car!
WHOA!!! You have a 2012 with 355,000 and this the first time changing plugs? That's awesome! I have a 2012 and just hit 165,000 miles was getting paranoid about changing my belt LoL Changing mine next weekend but it's great to know it can last 355,000+ miles! Same as the plugs!
I just changed my belt this morning. It had 164,000 miles, 2012 car is 11 years old, the old belt had no wear marks or any cracks. My frined was able to do it without taking the wheel off. He did it from under the hood. It took a while but he finally got it on after about 30 minutes. Car runs great...
Nice! I have a 2015 Honda Fit I’m going to take this DIY work on my own thank you for making a video of this task! I’ve been searching videos but yours is very detailed👍 just sub to your channel and more videos please 💡✍🏼🏆
FYI, the tensioner is 19mm (0.748in) if you have metric. Belt check (tensioner check) (too short & too long)) marks are on the auto-tensioner looking down in the engine bay.
You make this job look much easier than the dealer is telling me. This looks easier than changing the auger belt on my snowblower. Should the tensioner be replace with the belt?
Regular belt and serpentine belt are same thing lol !! People just call it differently. You probably refuring to a Timing Belt that inside of your engine, this engine don't have timing belts anyway, they use chain and that chain less foever! You don't touch it unless it's some sort of a damaged. Also your car have one Serpentine(regular) belt not two like some cars have.
I hope I can get a quick accurate authoritative reply. Does ONE belt drive BOTH water pump AND alternator I have taken a chance and bought a high mileage Honda jazz. ( english name) I now see the drawing of the belt which oddly enough looks upside down to what I see looking in to my engine. I see the belt going over the top of the alternater which appears to be shown at the bottom of the drawing. My car has Air Conditioning fitted.
I'm thinking the same... My wife's car is a Honda jazz o8 reg 70, 000 mls no problems should I change it now or not... And will it do any damage if it breaks... I will see if you get an answer best of luck.
I am and will beacuse the video is well made and explained verry well. My dad is puting a belt right this minute. The diogram in this video is the best.
Have no idea. I bought what Advance Auto Part recommended. It fit perfectly. Don't remember part number. There is really not that many options, they all have same belt
@@IvanRossSmy a/c compressor is broken..I was thinking about fitting a belt from a non- air con…and bypassing the air con pulley…do you think it will work
Thanks! Combination of zip ties on the tensioner wrench and sliding the belt over the smooth water pump pulley last was the key to the job. Would have taken a lot longer without your hints.
Thank you SO MUCH! The heat shield cover broke and was stuck near the strap and alternator. I lost so much time looking underneath… thanks to your video you made me think i can just open the damn hood and find that broken piece, more room to work with. Gratitude 🙌
i just did mine... what i learned/did i would recommend getting a Serpentine wrench or longer wrench that fits - i used one that was about 10 inches (25 CM) w/o real issues, longer would have been better. anything shorter probably gonna have issues . i was going to use a ratchet as first as i just bought a shallow socket for this but realized the ratchet was likely too short to zip tie and using a pipe on ratchet with tension seemed like potential TIFU post. have extra zip ties before starting - i had 2, lost first one but then found it i was doing this during a sunny day, left new belt on dash to suck up sun heat energy for the little expansion i jacked side of car up and used the wheel well access - did not need to get underneath car possibly easiest thing to replace on my fit that involves more than one tool
I bought Honda city from lady whose car didn’t have owner’s manual or original specs of the belt. I ended up buying three belts to just replace the old belts. The size does matter. Your videos does help indeed.
I'm getting ready to replace the belt on my daughter's 2015 Fit and other channels have suggested leaving the new belt out in the sun (or placing in the oven) to soften it up before installing it as it can be a very tight fit.
Would you say it is necessary to remove the tire if you only want to replace the serpentine belt? I would prefer not to remove the tire, but if I have to, I have to. Great video! thank you!
Thanks for the tutorial. I have a 2011 honda fit . had to replace the serpentine belt + tensioner because a friend of mine i supposed he was my friend he ended up installing a wrong belt in it. It was a smaller belt and forced the tensioner's spring. The mechanic replaced the tensioner and the serpentine belt. It happens that there is a noise there of something shaking , metal like sound. People looked at the alternator, replaced the alternator 's bearing. Replaced the A/C's pulley bearing.... water pump pulley seems ok. But still, the noise happens and disappears if you turn the car on without the serpentine belt in place. I dont know what else to do. Mechanic promissed me the bearing of the tensioner is ok, because it comes with it when you buy it, but my gut tells me he might be wrong . The only left pully is the crank one ..... Noise only get loud between 500 rpm and 900 rpm. Tell me, would you live with it? Would you worry about it? Makes me afraid
thanks to you i replaced my belt but i used goodyear one. it running too but i am not 100 percent sure, i am hearing noises from engine, is it about belt or i should visit some mechanic ?
Thank you for this video, it helped a lot. You make it look easy! The hardest part for me was getting the belt off and especially putting the new one back on. Replacing the tensioner wasn't too bad. I bought a tool kit for removing belts from Amazon, like the thing that was shown in which you said it didn't come with the 3/4 crow foot wrench. Well mine didn't either, and the socket that did fit was too big with how tight it is around the tensioner. It is extremely tight! Even a half inch more clearance would have made things a lot easier. I ended up buying an extra long 19mm box end wrench and 19mm ratcheting wrench. The extra long wrench ended up working for me, and the zip tie trick did come in handy.
In my car honda fit shuttle 2012 and make too much heat the air conditioning hose pipe front one too hot engine do cut out and also do cooling don't know about the compressor or a leak somewhere
i replaced the belt and tensioner but now i hear a loud squeaking sound on cold starts and when i accelerate with the a/c on. if the car is warm and a/c is off, there is no sound and the car runs fine.
Thank you so much for this tutorial my belt snapped right before home so I was stranded for a day until I got the part. Hardest part was getting the belt on the last pulley but your tip helped a lot
You mentioned Pulley Bolt and Tensioner Bolt torque spec, can i know what is the pulley bolt for? im a lil bit confuse, because isn't it that you just removed two bolt that holding the tensioner? By the way, this video helps a lot. Thanks!
Yes, I am in NJ UsA Right now I am watching your video because my car started to make horrible noises, I took her to a garage and he is saying its the tensioner and not the water pump as I thought. So I am getting the parts and will do it myself because this garage is asking 500 for that this time. Screw them
The pulley on my tensioner isn't turning, which is why I'm replacing it (and the belt). I'd just do it when the belt is replaced, they're cheap enough at Rock Auto.
Can the Idler Pulley be removed/replaced without taking the entire Belt Tensioner off the vehicle? And if only the Idler Pulley is bad should the entire Belt Tensioner just be replaced? Or just the Idler Pulley? Thanks
Sorry I just now seeing your comment... You can replace only idle pulley, but for you to replace it you have to remove entire tensioner, because it's secured by one bolt under the tensioner and you can see this in the video 4:46
I don't think so you got a correct belt. Also there's a possibility you have a wrong belt somebody stick wrong wise of belt in this paper wrap. The part number that I use for this replacement I listed in the description to this video.
I'm so tired of answering this questions..... do you know their is a description box under every single video on RU-vid, you're going to find a lot of useful information there. ..
You don’t need to remove the wheel I just did this job all from the engine bay. All you have to do is hook to the front bottom pulley and start aligning the other pulley carefully
Belt overtime stretch for sure, you might have idle pulley issue too and if you're doing all this job I might... go ahead and replace pulley as well, you doing all this work anyway. You can buy just pulley separately and replaces it yourself, it's not super hard and the cost way cheaper! You're almost never replace tensioner unless there is really something bad happened with it!
Great video!!! Thanks!! My belt tensioner rattles when I blip the gas, it's a Gates tensioner, I replaced it 2 years ago, I should've probably got with the Honda Tensioner??
@@IvanRossS thanks a lot for prompt reply. One follow up question. What could be wrong with the car, if engine revs hard on it self, specially when pressing clutch it is more evident. Even though foot is off the gas pedal engine revs increases for few seconds.
this is a huge help.. was just at dealer for oil change today, they told me the belt needed to be replaced and i dont much like paying for service, only pay oil changes for warranty and b/c i dont really have good place to jack it up for crawling under just watch your fingers putting new belt on if your using zip ties like that - i could see me losing part of a finger doing this and having zip tie snap
