Honda Fit Stuck Rear Door/ Trunk/ Hatch Latch

This is not a fix, but shows what the issue with the hatch latch is. I have a 2010 Honda Fit Sport that i just recently bought this week and already this issue pops up. Of course like the rest of the Honda community the search online began. I didnt see too many answers or real fix.
But what i did discover myself is ( which isnt mentioned in my video ) is:
1. The spring to push the handle latch back, -it looks like Honda used a paper clip😡 so of course its not strong enough to push back
2. The white "knobby" will not roll down to the indent because the latch won't push back
Summary:
when you unlock doors + white knobby doesn't engage notch + squeeze the hatch handle + cable pulls latch + spring doesn't push back + latch stuck to the right = handle stuck (door stuck)
This might be a dealership fix..havent tried that yet.
Please comment below with any fixes or suggestions. Good luck 😁

Dude. Thank you so much. I'm taking care of my son's car while he's deployed (Army). I didn't even realize that part was supposed to move. It was rusted in place. A little WD-40 and it works like a charm. I owe you a beer if you're ever in Cleveland. Peace.

Your video was very helpful! As pointed out in earlier replies, lubrication of both the hinge/ spring above the handle along with lubrication of the interior mechanism fixed our Fit with the same problem.

Hi Mr. Jackson - I had the same problem with my 2009 Fit and I went through the fix in your later video. However, the real problem is that the latch is rusted and not working. There is another RU-vid video “Honda Fit Sticky Tailgate Latch Handle Repair” that shows you how to replace the latch and even gives you the Honda parts numbers. Your video helped me to open the door so I could replace the latch. Thanks!! I don’t know what I would do without RU-vid and people like you!!!! (Probably be pretty broke from going to the Dealer!!)

due to the pin shaft being regular plain bare steel and it is wet all the time under that applique panel, so it horribly rusts and freezes/jams the handle up. im doing the release handle on a 2012 Fit right now tonight, i drove the rusted pin out after scraping it all off as good as i could with a small knife blade, then i sprayed it with acetone and trans fluid mix and then i drove the pin out all the way, replaced it with a galvanized steel gutter nail its perfect same diameter as the pin, and lots of red grease.. works awesome perfect now yay..

Thanks for this - helped me troubleshoot my 08 Fit problem a lot faster. Lubricating all the parts in question, PLUS the exterior handle did the trick for me. I think the problem was primarily the handle - it's exposed to the elements and dirt and got pretty seized up. WD-40 from the inside and outside there plus a lot of moving in and out loosened it up and now it works a treat.

Fixed it thanks to your video! All I did was remove that access panel with a regular screwdriver (took 2 seconds), then sprayed lubricant all over in their, and then importantly I sprayed lubricant on the outside of the car around the pull handle for that latch including the visible spring mechanisms for that; now the exterior latch handle retracts as it should (but did not) after pulling on it to open the hatch! :)

Great on the video. Thank you. I have a 2012 same problem. I too came up with a "fix". Hang a large bungee cord on the wire (both ends). Tie the cord into a large knot to keep from closing into door. The weight of the bungee cord hanging on that wire, makes it open...either way you go...you're saving about $300 to have the part replaced.

yes it takes a good couple of hours to repair these Fit hatches latch and handle issues. improper lubrication is the main cause of all the Fit hatch latching etc issues. the relase handle cross pin shaft rust really horribly and freeze the handle up, raw bare steel pin thats wet all the time so it rusts up horribly. they shoulda used stainless or aluminum for the pin shaft...

@@fast68chevy found out that WD 40 is a really bad thing for a vehicle lock because it actually removes the grease that is inside the assembly , always use water proof grease , plumbing grease works great for them

This was extremely helpful, thanks! But... you only told us what the problem was, but not what the permanent fix is! Fortunately a lot of folks in the comments pointed out that lubrication is the fix. Let me try some white lithium grease on that thing... mine's a 2008 Honda Fit. Let's see if I can get it to work. I'll come back and mention the result...

@mshaw290808mi

HERE IS THE FIX! I took the door apart and found that every ones comments agree with what I found. Open the rear hatch so it is level with the pavement (it is easier to see the latch this way.) Shine a bright flashlight into the handle latch on the outside of the door that you use to open it. At the top of the handle is the hinge; if it is like mine it has a rusty spring and rusty end cap on each end of the hinge. Get a bottle of spray grease from Wal-Mart www.walmart.com/ip/CRC-White-Lithium-Grease-10-Oz./16817414 , Do not use WD-40 it will evaporate over time. Attach the hose that comes with the can of spray lube and pinpoint spray the hinge, spring and end caps. Now work the handle back and forth until the spring in the latch returns it back where it belongs. Might have to repeat this step until it works.

spray lube in the latch assembly those moving parts is what helps that
@MikeSmith-wd4hn
@MikeSmith-wd4hn 5 лет назад
This is not the only fault that can appear to be as described. What can happen is that the 'hook' in the latch mechanism can get jammed internally, requiring a whole replacement of that lock assembly. But when the door won't open because it is jammed in the closed position, you cannot then open the tailgate door to fix the problem! Overall, a very bad design by Honda - as is so often the case with their cars.

behind the panel that the latch release handle is inside of,. the top sid eof the handle assbly is where the rusted pin and problem is. always is wet every time it rains etc, and so the pin rusts horribly. and freezes the handle up. some really good spray lube with a spray straw would be a good way to get to the top of the handle assy behind the panel. if you can spray right over the "top" of the figer well part of the release handle assemly the shaft and spring are right there. up from underneath away from the hatch surface side of the handle assmbly

I think it's the metal cable that goes up into the chassis to the handle. This metal won't move freely causing the plastic to not return all the way down. why I think it's the metal cable? Because the metal can rust inside a plastic tube.

Funny. When I purchased my 2012 fit back in late 2014, and started driving it in early 2015, the hatch quickly gave me problems. It kept trying to lock when driving, and couldn't, so it would just keep trying to lock over and over. I had to take it to the dealership, and they found out the locking mechanism was messed up, and ended up replacing it.

I would be careful with NotAnExpert's advice, good as it is. For the the sake of clarity, the LATCH is the collective bits that keep the door closed. The HANDLE manipulates the latch. I was having problems with the latch. Grease will pick up dirt over time. The product recommended (by NotAnExpert) says: "Remove with a degreaser or brake cleaner product". Yike--bad to worse. If it doesn't evaporate, it will pick up dirt until it gums up worse than when you started. Better to go for a very light lube that will evaporate and when it does simply re-apply it, what, two, three times a year? I use a "dry" teflon lube. Although it's stinking foul sh*t, WD-40 is probably ok. The plastic-on-metal LATCH is probably best off being perfectly clean (yeah, I'll get right on it); plastic on metal is slippery to begin with. However, I don't really know what's sticking and since it's like yoga-gone-bad trying to work on that thing I just stick a half drop of dry lube on anything that moves and hope for the best. If that doesn't work I'll try again. So far, so good.
@Ulbre
@Ulbre 6 лет назад
yeah, I thought similar when I read that comment......the WD-40 is actually a great start for loosening up any gunk that has clogged it up....once that's sorted and it's operating normally, add some lube lube if you wish......if it's still not working then you may be looking at failure within the actuator

Shine a bright flashlight into the handle latch on the outside of the door that you use to open it. At the top of the handle is the hinge; if it is like mine it has a rusty spring and rusty end cap on each end of the hinge. Attach the hose that comes with the can of spray lube and pinpoint spray the hinge, spring and end caps. With such an ongoing problem, I cant believe Honda removed this access door from the newer Honda Fits. I guess they just want us to go to the dealership for all repairs. 3rd Generation fix ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--YTrKrG8p-o.html

In my video description it says it's not a fix. Also included is the link to my resolution, which isn't a fix, but will make life a lot easier to opening and closing the hatch. I am glad you watched and got something out of it.
