Replacement of the Honda GL1000 swing arm assembly on a 1976 GoldWing. A comprehensive video showing all of the steps. There are a few narration bloopers but I am sure you can see around them.
The driveshaft u-joint broke after about 250,000 miles. It was showing signs of slop before this happened but I did not change it in time. Do not let this happen to you as you may become stranded for many hours and ruin your entire day.
This video shows replacement of an entire swing arm assembly because I was able to buy the swing arm with the driveshaft for less than half of the price of the shaft alone. ($60 including shipping)
I hope this video helps others in the same way so many RU-vid videos have helped me.
Greg Kennedy

Thanks for the video. I’ve read that using moly paste is better for the final drive splines, something about it having better compressive qualities than other lubricants.

Thanks for the advice Si. The information from the factory manual is good but new tech is better!

You should definitely use moly grease at least 60% content. All drive shaft motorcycle are using this grease nowadays because of past failures

Hi I just bought my first Goldwing GL1100 and am close to 70. This bike really suits my age and I love to ride whenever I get a chance. Just one question I've been wanting to know. Witherspoon the bike in the center stand and in gear how much should the rear wheel turn freely? Mine is moving about 2 inches. Is that normal? Thanks for the great video.
@mansonboys

Welcome to the Goldwing world! My rear wheel does the same as you describe so I don't see it as a problem.

You should use Molly grease instead of all purpose grease. Much better qualities and lasts longer.

Thank you. Exactly what I needed. I don't have a manual and this is much better. Excellent job! I helped my son put a replacement engine in his 1979 GL1000. We could not get the splines to mate so had to remove the swing arm to clean the spline. it is a snug fit, even when clean. Would have been so much easier to clean when the engine was out.

Can't buy it no more. Honda and BMW forums are full of guys running around like chickens with their heads off. The consensus seems to be that M77 is OK.

I had one of those Gold wings (1976 red color). sold it 20 years ago with 28000 miles. I'm curious how many miles are on your bike.
@mansonboys
@mansonboys Год назад
I am curious about it too! A rough estimate would be around 300K miles. I am on the third speedometer and the odometers keep dying on me. It has never been rebuilt but I converted the quad carbs into a single.

This is an amazing video. Extremely detailed. I recently bought a 77 gl1000 for cheap because of the bad ujoint (destroyed completely). I’ve never messed with motorcycles (diesel tech) before and this made it easy. Great job!

They are the same shocks it came with! So they must be Honda shocks. I do need to change them one of these days.

Thanks for making this video. I will pretty much do this same procedure starting today on my 1985 Ltd with only 37k kms. I just want to know that all the grease is new and she should be ready to go for another 10 yrs.

This is a very well done video and complete. I will be using it to change out my driveshaft, because yesterday I think the U-joint on my 76 went out right next to the Igloo in Wenatchee.

Why didn't honda put oil in the swing arm like the old air cooled BMW's?

A brass brush would have worked perfectly on those splines for cleaning, brass is much softer than the steel shaft, it would only clean it really good and not scuff or gouge... but you got it!

I'm new to Goldwings. I have no problems going through gears etc but get a little noice when letting off gas, in gear, coming to a stop. Not drive shaft I hope. 85 Aspencade, 80.400 miles.
@mansonboys
@mansonboys 5 лет назад
Rocky, I am glad to hear you liked the video. I am sorry you are hearing noises when you decelerate. When the u-joint goes out, the symptoms are quite different than what you are experiencing. The u-joint will cause slop on acceleration AND deceleration. There are a number of possible causes for your issue. Inspecting the drive hub for slop can be done on the tool stand. Make sure everything is greased properly, etc. The problem could be anywhere in the drive train. Inspection is the first step.

I’m a new rider, bought my first bike-81 Goldwing GL1100-last summer, and last fall I was riding and the rear wheel locked up. Transmissions still shifts, engine starts up, but no matter the gear, the r ear wheel doesn’t turn. I’ve been told by various people it sounds like the drive shaft has seized, which brought me to your video. I have to do the repairs, whatever they are, on my own, and was wondering what your thoughts are, if you don’t mind. 🙂
@mansonboys
@mansonboys 3 года назад
Welcome to the Goldwing world! When my u-joint went out, the wheel still turned. If your rear wheel will not turn at all, you will need to start by removing the rear wheel and see if the drive gear is turning or not. Keep working your way through the drive train until you find what is causing the problem.
