Honda Gl1500 Idle surge and carb question.

Engine RPM surges up and down while at idle. Engine runs rough and hesitates on takeoff. Bike has set up for a while, but had fuel stabalizer in it. Seems like a vaccum leak I think. When I put my finger over the taller of the two brass fittings in the carb venturi (the ones that come straight up not the accellerator pump fitting) on the right or left carb the engine smooths out and idles normally. However if I plug both of these holes the engine misses and idles rough again. If I plug the hole in one of the fittings with a toothpic the engine does not hesitat on take off. What is this brass fitting and what am I changing when I put my finger over it or plug it with a toothpic? Does this indicate a carb problem or a vaccum leak?

According to the mechanics at Booth Cycle. There is very tiny accelerator pump "holes". These get clogged very easly. Any gas over 3 months old will start to turn into "varnish". A "proper" carb rebuild will clean these holes out and it will run great.

My GL1500 had a vacuum hose with a 90 degree bend in it that had a hole melted right where the bend was. It required the carbs to be removed to get at it. I had a dealer do it so I am not exactly sure where it was. He said it was a common problem and did not take long to trouble shoot. The hole in the vacuum line caused the RPM's to drop to slow when upshifting plus a uneven idle even when warmed. gas I took it a dealer. Tried seafoam first but it did not cure it so I took it to the dealer.

Having the same problem with mine now...thanks for posting.

There is some suggestion that both of those holes in each carburetor can be plugged with toothpicks and will then run as expected? Not certain why, but it works. Evidently there's a vacuum leak somewhere within the emission system vacuum maze? Perhaps the toothpick idea is an acceptable fix?

it was the vaccume hose that went to the auto fuel shut off. and holes in the two larger vaccume hoses under the carbs. almost every hose that had a bend in them. the two under the carbs have 90 degree bends in them.

Did you have to remove the carbs to find the holes? Mine runs perfectly but got a very bad air hissing sound when choke is completely off. The more you choke it, the quieter the hissing is.

The needle jet rods attached to the slider valves are leaking. If you look down the carb bores when its running, and if you see fuel dribbling out of the jets it will intermediately surge when idling.

found a leaky vacuum hose on the left side of the motor by the middle cylinder. Mechanic said its typical of where vacuum leaks occur.

Yes it was vaccum leaks. I fixed the vaccum leaks and the filter inthe sub air system and now it idles as it should.

yes if you block that holles you will have 15l /100 km fuel consumtione

After driving me crazy I finally figured it out. The center stand must be used to prevent oil going to one side. After placing on center stand it even starts with out the choke now in freezing weather. I adjusted my idle mixture screw while on the center stand. Bike isn't really designed to set leaning towards one side.

i think there is a total of 17 vac lines....replace em all. Plus it will NOT run right without air filter, so replace all that to test your work

I checked the automatic fuel cut off valve for holes and ther were non in it. That was not the problem

So which hose was the problem? I dont trust Stabil. If you read the instructions . its only supposed to help fuel for 6 months

Mr Sharlan...I am having the same exact problem...can you please tell me what hoses you found to be the culprits? I went to remove the carbs and some nincompoop stripped the screws on the clamps holding the carbs on the manifold... I hope this message finds you well Sir...

The main vaccume hoses under the carbs had holes in them near the 90 degree bend in each hose. You can remove the carbs without loosening the clamps. After you have all the cables off of the carb just grab the carb on either the left or right side and pull up hard. Then repeat on the other side. Replace the screws in the clamps brfore reinstalling. After the carbs are removed lift out the rubber heat shielding to see the large vaccume hoses.

jamesharlan7789 Thank you very much Sir. I will give that a shot...and I believe you are correct about being able to remove the carbs that way. I cant see in my mind what hoses these are but I believe you haha... I thought I was aware of each hose in the vacume system...but hey...your machine runs flawlessly so I will give it a shot. I also have a sneaking suspicion that I need to get into the carb bowls anyway...the way the jets have that convoluted cover over top of the idle jet has me worried that its clogged. The main problem I am having is that she runs "choppy" at idle...the idle is not as smooth as it could be and it creates a problem when starting out from a stop...no power/choppy power and then BAM...Plenty of power because she runs smooth when on the throttle...its just at or around idle that is problematic. Guess what I will be doing in the next few hrs? I already have the plastics off and only need to remove the airbox...so its waiting for me now... I will let you know how I make out and I thank you very much for getting back to me so quickly. Stay Tuned !

jamesharlan7789 Well...My hat is off to you Sir ! I popped the carbs off and Sure Enough...there was a vac leak right under the carbs... It was a small hose that joins the manifold openings for each carb. It was worn right thru...small hose with Orange markers on it... I went thru the carb bowls while I was that far in there and they were spotless. I only found one hose to be the culprit however. At any rate...fixing that hose along with two new un-stretched T Belts...and she runs like a top. Idle is smooth...However I may need to adjust the accelerator pump a little bit...I think she pumps a tad too late... Other than that...your advice was invaluable. THANK YOU VERY MUCH SIR !!!

I think I got lucky. I used an air hose to blow out the hole (extended tube on left carb) seemes to work now. Drove several miles checking idle at times. No signs of rough idle. 75psi at about
