Nice vid Andy, isn’t it strange, and like you say, when you travel through the European villages the lack of humans is very noticeable, like ghost towns, also we’ve just done a tour of the WW1 war graves and museums through Belgium and France, it’s very moving and to think what they, in most cases kids, went through and to think certain world leaders haven’t learnt anything……so sad 😞

Always notice that in France. I was told that most farmers and land workers etc live in villages and travel out to farms etc and only return in evening. Dunno, sounded about right

My wife just reminded me last night, today is my anniversary. A year ago today. It hadn’t even occurred to me. She wasn’t to pleased with me, when I went skiing with an old buddy at the end of last season. Or when I pulled my bike out the Garage at the beginning of this one. My buddy has his own problems, his wife was pretty angry at both of us. Lots of comments about what would happen if we fell. It was a really good day, cloudy cold and windy. It was great just to be able to get out there. Same with the bike. I was good just to really feel alive. I just got myself another, even bigger bike, and I plan to just get out and live a little. I don’t think she approves of my new bike, but at least she sat on this one. And she didn’t loose the plot when I told her about the trip I’m planning. Dr’s still have me grounded. Which is a bit annoying. The sooner you get back on the horse, the happier you will be. Keep trying to do more you will find it gets a little easier as time goes by.

Slightly non pc comment. While stationed in Belgium I asked my Belgium neighbor why the same road had so many different highway numbers for the same highway. Without missing a beat he said "it was to confuse the Germans the next time they invade".

A BMW K1100RS is the biggest bike I've owned but I must say that the sound of the Goldwing purring effortlessly along and carrying you in comfort looks VERY nice indeed.

The thing with this big heavy bikes is that we can never depend on managing them by muscling it around. If we have to do something to move it slowly, will be always with the engine turned on, some body counter balance and a combination of throttle, clutch and a gentle rear break action . It demands some proper skills but with some love, work and practice , everything is achievable. And this is not different 😃✌️✌️

I make routes on the computer to put them in the satnav. I’m still flexible. I can stop using the route and just ride as I want. At a later stage I still can get back to a point of the route and ride that one. Don’t mind the screen, most of it isn’t in view in whatever position it is in. The Ardennes are in fact just the lower part of the Eifel mountains. I did a ride there and hope to do another one soon. Beautiful motorcycle roads. I have been riding in The Ardennes and Luxemburg too but with a car. Stay on the main and bigger roads in Belgium or you’ll be needing the GS. I did some with my sports touring bike and I only just made it. Forget that with the Goldwing.

French provincial towns tend to close at about 7pm. Some of them may look great. But, they aren't the greatest places for an enjoyable night out.

You’ve done well Clive, in my experience France tends to shut about 5 pm - never even opens on a Sunday! I do love France but there are aspects of the country that are very frustrating!

Beautiful Belgium. Such an overlooked destination, usually just somewhere people ride through. Which is perhaps why you don't see too many people touring here? And the sun signs on the righteous. Apparently. Good one to enjoy with my cornflakes team, TMF Happy travels 👍

Loving this Andy. I rode from the Pyrenees to Calais last year avoiding motorways over two days, not one pothole and endless beautiful towns and villages. Riding in France is fantastic, and the houses are cheap 😁

too bad I didn't know you came to our Belgian Ardennes, I could have given you some nice routes. One of the routes that you should definitely do is between Barriere de Champlon and Nassogne. We also call it our race track. You drove a long way along the Meuse and the Semois. The region of Alle, Vresse, Bouillon etc is a true motorcycle paradise. Just a pity that the condition of the Belgian asphalt sometimes leaves much to be desired. That is why it is much more fun in Luxembourg and also the German Eifel. Looking forward to the continuation of your rides in my backyard :-D I love the English roads in Wales, Lake District, Yorkshire Dales etc. The Cotswolds are on my to do list.

A luddite on a high tech Goldwing.?...certainly interesting. I do like that bike though and I shouldn't on the basis that it's a bit old man. And if you're touring Europe it has to be japanese, imagine doing it on an Italian bike, international breakdown recovery needed. Great scenery, France is beautiful. My Mrs is pissing herself laughing at geezer on a crucifix. 😆

It's a shame we didn't see the bit where you struggled as it's managing the wings size in those situations which interests me as a potential owner. Wafting through countryside is one thing we know it does brilliantly, I just wonder about it on alpine passes compared to my current k1600gt. Anyway, no idea what to expect in Luxembourg I just rode straight through it once, so looking forward to it.

I find it easier to move around in tight spots than the K1600 - the weight is more manageable on the GoldWing as it sits lower thanks to the flat six engine…

I have been downsizing (Rebel 1100 DCT, CB500X, Vespa 300, and a Monkey!). But coming from large BMW touring bikes I am missing that type of ride so considering a Goldwing. Then watching your video and hearing you almost dropped it on a difficult corner. If I get one I will be riding solo so just wanted to ask if your wife was not on the back would you have had more control of the situation or is the bike just such a beast even without her on board would that corner have caused the same issue. Love your content by the way and have been following you for some time. Any by the way like that note about staying in the right hand lanes, often wonder how someone like Itchy Boots keeps that straight going through multiple countries.

Only Mad Dogs and Englishmen. I thought was just a thing further south. What a lovely looking place, I suppose for the rest of Europe going from one country into another is no big deal. Not even a sign post. It’s an area I have a desire or duty to visit some day. As far as I know none of us ever have. My dad never actually knew where to go. It’s only been in recent years with records available on line. I have found where I believe is the right location. Le Cateau. I believe it is in France. Along with such places as Flanders, Vimy Somme ect. I believe I owe my very existence to the kindness and bravery of a Belgian doctor and his family. Who in March 1918 found my grandfather alive among the dead, saved and hid him until after the armistice. He was reported KIA, and returned. His Brother unfortunately did not, he is MIA. My dad has a photograph of a young boy. Which was sent to my grandfather sometime in the 1920s. Unfortunately although I believe he did keep in touch. Their names were not passed on. A hundred years later. I don’t know who they or where they were. Strange to see such a lovely place where such terrible events took place just 100 years ago.

Well I’m watching this from my garden in sunny Western Australia, a nice Winters Day. Very relaxing watching your tour, a great vid, not sure if you can, but have a set up where Carol has a camera on her helmet to view things while you concentrate on the twisties. I’ve some catching up to do on your videos and it’s the first time I’ve noticed you wearing Rukka gear, I’ve got the Rukka Stretchair, awesome gear. I’ve just got back from a week in Benalmadena Costa Del Sol visiting my father, managed to hire a bike for a day and went riding in the mountains towards Rhonda with my brother. First time I’ve ridden in Europe in the mountains, it was amazing, with watching your tours and my experience I’m looking forward to doing it again but for longer. Looking forward to watching more of your tours. 😊

Screen is better in the upper position for camera view. In lower position it seems to distort the image. French baguettes not as good as Greggs ones eh Mr Flyer. You were seen emerging from Greggs in Amersham chewing on one wednesday 7th June then sitting outside on your Speed Twin finishing it off. Be careful of hidden speed cameras and radar traps in France as there are lots of them. Would be nice to see you do a trip to Germany and legally max out the GW on an autobahn. Bet it would be solid as rock at max speed even with Mrs Flyer and luggage on the back. Joy de vivre Mr Flyer, joy de vivre. Merci beaucoups.

Are you still using Packtalk bold? I bought the freecom 2 and if I conected it to the tft I couldn't speak to my buddy rider. Cardo says the Bold or edge is what I need. I just wanted to know if you had issues with the unit conected to the bike, phone and buddy riders ect. More European tours please 😊

We flew our V Strom to Baku for the F1 and are riding it back to UK now. Currently in northern Turkiye and agree with you about the feeling of riding on tour again.

I was told some time ago that the reason French towns seem deserted is that historically the residents used to hide away from the tax collectors by pretending they were out when they came into town by 'living' on the other side of their houses. Apparently this habit continues (but the tax bill comes via an email ;-).

Tip for you ; Airbag jackets can be warm , BUT , in heat , they allow you to completely unzip the front of the motorcycle jacket , allowing a good breeze inside . The clasps of the airbag jacket hold everything together perfectly whilst that considerable breeze keeps you cool. Gloves inside the sleeves , which are kept loose , is another tip which generates a welcome breeze up the arms.

A lovely road,bit further south in France,D961, Troyes to Dijon or reverse,make sure you have fluids with you,not many cafés on route.
