I am in the market for a vehicle with light off-road capabilities and while checking out the newer Passport stumbled on your channel and couldn't be more impressed with the quality, straight forward approach of your content. Just want to say thank you and your efforts are greatly appreciated.
That was a cool overview, I liked seeing your setup with two people sleeping in the back. I also like how you utilize the roof box to store a ton of stuff in a nice aerodynamic container. Thanks for sharing dude!
Couldn't tell from the video, but, if you're not, get a 12V power supply/cord for your ResMed. When I'm camping, not having power going through the invertor on the battery pack greatly increases my runtimes since its direct power, no invertor/heat etc, loss, supplied to the CPAP. Also, a portable (ie. lower power) unit will also save battery. (Had Sleep Apena since I was a kid and was always in shape...in my case, its just a matter of how my throat is built...life saving & life changing for sure!)
It's really amazing how portable your whole setup is. I have tons of room but feel like I still have a lot of setup and teardown time. I don't really want a hard-shell RTT full time, but I am starting to lean that way just for the time savings. Also, I love how no-nonsense your gear is, especially the Gorilla-taped headboards XD
awesome video!!!! Great walk around, too... Imogene pass is perty dern beautiful... wicked cool build, brother! thank you for sharing. looking forward to hanging with you in the future
Love your channel, just got into this sort of thing and am taking baby steps lol bought a 2021 trd off road taco! You break things down in such a simple chill way, and your passport is so clean 🧼! Thanks for the great content
Thanks for the kind words Pony Richards 🙏. Baby steps are the way to go! Doing a shakedown trip is really the only way to know if a system works out. The Passport is 2.5 years old and I’m just now considering a RTT. It was a big decision because I was so happy with my Solo build, but my 2 person build is lacking, and a RTT will really tie everything together.
I 100% agree with your thoughts about a CPAP. A few years ago I thought probably less than 1% of people used them. After talking to thousands of customers I would say it's more like 10%. Pretty common really. Nothing to be ashamed or in denial of because healthy sleep is important!
Ha! So many CPAP comments! I’m proud to bring awareness to it. Sleep Apnea could really snow ball someone’s health. Not getting good sleep leads to low energy levels, which leads to gaining weight, and then all sorts of bad news. I was told that sleep apnea takes years, maybe decades off your life. I’m so glad I have my condition treated.
RTTs. This is the way. Man always so impressed at where that passport has taken you. Up into Imogene and down into Death Valley. Lots o' gear. This hobby is getting expensive 😜.
after the roof top tent I should look at swapping in the transmission and suspension from the Honda Ridgeline trophy truck. Hey Alan, can I borrow a million dollars?
@@JonDZ_Adventuring A million I have not but you know who does? Maybe @honda 'the power of dreams' could assist in making some wild ideas come to fruition.
I can stand behind primitive racing skid plates, Paul knows how to protect the underside of subies for sure as he has been racing them for a good while now, also he is a very cool guy to know
I had primitive skid plates on both my WRX and FXT. Paul is a stand up guy, I emailed him that my skid plate was bent, and rather than have me buy a new one, he gave me instructions on how to flatten it back out using a 12 lb. sledge hammer 🔨.
Sharing is caring. I actually got the head board idea from a guy on the Subaru forums back when I use to drive a Forester. I’ve put my own twist on it though with the accordion hinge 😃
my wife and I are about to start our first road trip in july in a 2019 passport, great fucking content buddy super informative and you just got us amped for the road. yeeewww cheers from New Hampshire !!!
Jon, I really enjoyed seeing your gear and Passport setup. It would also be interesting if you did a video of your friends vehicles. Especially your friends with Honda Ridgelines. I'm on the fence about a new Passport vs a Ridgeline. It would be nice to see how people do their camping setups on the Ridgeline as well. Thank you!
Hey Jon, look into the resmed air mini cpap. I have ur setup but use the air mini for travel. It’s a bit louder but the profile is so much travel friendly. Plus they have a filter system to mimic the humidity function. But I agree, I was first in denial. But after getting it, I sleep like a baby
thanks for the overview, referencing your setup for my build on our '21 Highlander Hybrid AWD; will pickup the TRAXDA lift this summer. Will have to do more research on skid plates, but don't plan on off-road anytime soon with 2 under 2 yet.
Solid Video! I think a solid video would be the break down of the different modes they have for the passport/pilot/ridgeline. I have a pilot and ive kinda dug down into the snow, mud, and sand mode but it would be sweet on what modes you use for instance going up river beds and such. I noticed in some of your videos you mention about going into S mode and use your paddle shifters. If you could dive down on how you approach an obstacle and what modes are best to use would be sweet gives me a good idea on how I can better idea on how to approach table tops and such. Really enjoyed your videos and because of that ive joined your group on FB. Of course second what you said about what to purchase for overlanding using an AWD. Anyways Mahaloz for the videos keep em coming!
That's a good idea! I'm trying to release 1 video a week, so explaining the modes will be a nice easy (and short video), thanks for the recommendation.
@@JonDZ_Adventuring heck yeah dude it could be a side series like you don't even have to do much and the video would be easy to pump out. Show clips you did before and talk what you did to get from point a to b. Or a whole vid of you talking about the modes/transmission and so on. Excited to see those vids
Just found you. Where do you find wrap for doing your own? I have a bipap. I was just thinking tonight on how I could do it in a vehicle and stumbled onto you.I take it that power source will operate all night. I have two vehicles not used for camping yet. 1998 taho, and recent Nissan Morono. Thanks for the common sense ideas.
Hey Kris, I found the vinyl wrap on the internet and at the time metro restyling had the best prices. Regarding my Cpap machine, I use a power station to keep it running all night. Cpap machines don't use too much juice, my old 500 WH (watt hour) went from 100% to 70% overnight. Now I have a 1440 WH and I use it to power my portable refrigerator, Cpap, fans or whatever, it has alot of juice. It recharges through Solar at night. Oh, by the way, my vehicle has been going through changes, and once it's completed I'll release a Honda Camper version 2.0 walk around.
Great video. Do you know what is the cargo depth in a Passport? From the back of first row all the way to the end. I assume you also utilize the leg space behind first row for head/pillow?
The Element has such an awesome camper community. I love those pop up tents you can install into them! So awesome! I’d love to see Honda make another element. The time is right!
@@JonDZ_Adventuring Yes an ecamper yeah I want one but dude they go for 7-12k hahaha my sleeping platform is working great for me with an exped mattress
I'm gonna have to steal that headboard idea, what did you use? Just 1/2 inch plywood with some cam buckle straps? I have one of the sleep systems with the inflatable cubes myself, and I don't want to lose that space.
I stole it from someone else :). Just sharing ideas and paying it forward! Yes, and I'd choose high quality plywood that won't splinter off and puncture your inflatable mattress. Since I do Solo camping, I installed am accordion hinge, so it swings out of the way to only cover one side. Or you can just make two separate boards, but it wont be as stable.
@@JonDZ_Adventuring lol I'm pretty sure I've seen another youtuber with a more basic version. But thanks! I solo camp as well, but I'd like the option, so I'll probably do what you did as well. If you don't mind me asking btw, didn't you have a luno life mattress in your earlier vids? If so, what made you go away from that?
That’s a good question Dalton. I would recommend the Luno life mattress because it’s made of tough material. I just had issues with the valves, which I believe they addressed in version 2.0. The main reason I went away from the Luno life mattress is because it’s 5” tall fully inflated. it’s advertised as 4”, which it would be if it wasn’t fully inflated, but if you don’t full inflate it, it’s sooooo noisy and squeaky. The thermarest Mattress is made of high quality materials and at the very most, sounds like crumpled paper when you run it under inflated. I’m 270 lbs, so I need to inflate things to get support. So the thermarest mattress is 3 inches inflated, which gives me 2 inches more vertical room. If you’re vehicle has lots of vertical height in the cargo area then I think it wouldn’t matter, but I struggled jumping to the back like I did in this video. You can see I had no room to spare.
@@JonDZ_Adventuring thanks again! I've got the 2.0 version myself and just wanted to make sure there wasn't some critical issue. Glad to hear the main reason is the height since that doesn't really bother me.
@@JonDZ_Adventuring just went ahead and got it set up, just like yours but without the tape at the moment. I did get pretty high quality oak plywood, and sanded it up, and I can already tell it'll be so much better than using storage bins wedged between the seats or the inflatable cube.
Wonderful modifications and great videos! Have u noticed any motor oil consumption? Thinking about buying one but I read many complaints about its excessive oil consumption? Thanks!
No issues with oil consumption. To my Knowledge the 2016+ Honda midsized platform doesn’t have any known issues. However, I did a Google search and found that Honda Pilots from 2009-2013 had oil consumption issues.
Hi Jon! I was looking for ways to set up a 2-person mattress in the back of our Honda Passport, and came across this video. I'm now a new subscriber by the way, and look forward to binge-watching the rest of your videos. In this one, you mentioned that the width of your air mattress was 50 inches wide, and the Passport has 48 inches between the wheel well. So you needed to do "a little cutting" to make it fit. How did you cut an inflatable mattress without messing it up? I really can't wrap my brain around it. Or did you cut something else?
That 3.5 lift is awesome. Care to share when you got it, by who, difference in mpg, and any consequences on the suspension from the lift? I want a lift so bad but I want to know the repercussions..
With the setup you see in this video, I was able to get about 22-23 mpg highway going 70 mph. In the city I drive spirited, so my city MPG sucks 🤣, it’s at around 15-16mpg. Since the Passport is rated to get 24 MPG highway, I’m not sure how much my mods truly affected them. I hear of some people getting up to 29 MPG, so did I lose 5 mpg? Yeah, sound about right. I was expecting 24MPG, so I don’t feel bad. I had my Passport lifted 2 inches at 8K miles and then had the 3.5 inch kit installed at 51K. I currently have 81K miles. I’m not sure how warranty is affected because I never had to use it. I have a dedicated video about the 3.5” lift. Lots of info, it’ll answer a lot of your questions
I have never thought about looking into it. I know the 3rd generation MDX has the same size engine but is tuned for 91 Octane. It's basically the same vehicle.
Additional thought: I can't believe the Toyota 4 Runner crawl ratio is so low. I know the Bronco/Wrangler are nearing 100:1. Is that including the low range transfer case?
Yes, that includes the low gear transfer case. Crazy huh? The Tacoma with the 6 speed transmission is geared 36:1. Rock crawling gearing is defined as 50:1 or better. The Jeep Cherokee trailhawk is geared 56:1. The Rubicon Wrangler is 77:1 the near 100:1 crawl ratios are for the manual transmissions.
@@JonDZ_Adventuring I just watched a TFL where they put the Cherokee Trailhawk as the best soft roader. They also said the Bronco Sport #2, Outback Wilderness at # 3, and Passport #4. I mean I'm not disagreeing about the Cherokee being the best in the rough but feel like it's kind of in a class of it's own. If it needs to be unibody IFS/IRS for Softroading status why not include the new Defender?
@@bruceyyyyy I saw that episode too! And left a comment about that 🤣. It’s bewildering because the Pilot and Ridgeline have always been tested to do so well, even better than Ford. Back when they had Gold Mine hill a Ridgeline got up so easy, but the Ford Expediton with the GKN a twinster (same AWD system as the Bronco Sport Badlands) had the rear diff overheat and go into limp mode. Really easily too!!! You know TFL hates CVTs, I think they just tried to save face by trying to say the Outback wilderness is more offroad capable than a Passport. I can’t say that the Passport is better than the Bronco sport, but what I’ve seen of how it performed on Fins N things, it appears the Passport is noticeably more capable. Must be the V6 and how the proprietary RDU system performs, and to a lesser degree the better gearing. Yeah, the Cherokee Trailhawk is in a class all it’s own. I’ve witnessed them conquer some obstacles easier than a 4runner. They don’t have the wheel articulation, so maybe it’s just the gearing and power to weight.
@@JonDZ_Adventuring Just saying what they said. I don't have first experience with any of those vehicles. I will say it's comical what my '06 Z71 Suburban will do. Size be damned. Low range really is a game changer.
When I got tested they told me I had a 3% sleep efficiency 😖. Then they said, we will need the loaner CPAP machine back, you’ll receive your machine in 3 months. I was like… WTF? I kept the loaner until they threatened to sue me and then I wrote Kaiser a nasty email about how if I die in a car accident because I fell asleep behind the wheel, my death would be their fault. I used the test results of a 3% sleep efficiency as leverage 😃
@@JonDZ_Adventuring I did the at home test. They said it was inconclusive. I did the test at their lab and they said to follow-up with the sleep doctor. COVID hit so it took a while to get though. The doctor said I was borderline. I lost about 10 pounds between the two tests, by the time I spoke to the doctor, I lost another 5 pounds. He said I might not need it anymore, lets do a 3rd test. 3rd test said no sleep apnea. To be fair, I don't feel as tire as before but part of me wanted to have sleep apnea so I could say yes, this is the problem and now I have a cure! lol
I like the thermarest mattress better. The only issue is that it’s a tight fit between the wheel wells. I actually took a razor blade to the wheel carper wheel well so that it would fit properly. The thermarest is a shorter profile and more comfortable. The Luno life mattress is taller (less headroom), makes a noisy rubbery sound, but the material is really really tough, so you can count on it to last. I really needed the head room.
So Jon I know I'm going to get flak for this BUT I own a 2011 Kia Sportage LX AWD and want to lift it so me and my girlfriend can go soft-roading did you get the blocks from Traxda? Would it be safe to put 4" inch blocks under my Kia because I want to put some OZ Racing and KT3s under it. Because we live in Maine so our roads SUCK
I wouldn’t give you flak! I love being part of the “overlanding” community, and you can drive whatever you want! So, most unibody crossovers can only take 2 inch strut spacers. If you go higher, than the subframe will need to be spaced as well to compensate for a more severe axle angle 📐. I’m not familiar with the 2011 Sportage suspension setup, but in some vehicles the geometry gets out of whack, and you might not end up with full minimum clearance gains. Sometimes aftermarket support might be hard to come by. The Russians love their KIAs, so you may be able to find a kit from them.
I now have an Eco Flow river pro with extended battery. 1440 WH. Since I previously owned a lifted and modified Subaru Forester, when I purchased the Passport I immediately purchase lower profile wheels and higher profile tires. It was stock for 3 days. I hear that stock Passports can get 27-29 mpg highway at 70 mph. My current build gets 21-22 mpg highway at 65 mph (on California gas), 22-23 mpg on non California gas.
@@JonDZ_Adventuring Any issues with the 9 speed auto or the infotainment system? From what I've read online it seems like Honda's quality has gone down hill. I really think the Honda Passport would be the best fit for me since I'm only going camping maybe 8 times a year. I don't need real 4x4 capabilities. I have a 2010 Honda Accord V6 that has been flawless for 160,000 miles and I've owned it for 9 years.
@@KPHVAC the ZF9 has a better track record than the Honda transmissions. No issues for me. Watch my most recent video. I have a message about using a scan gauge 2 to monitor transmission temps. It’s rare that it will hit 230F, but when it does, I pull over a give it a rest.
@@KPHVAC the trail I did in the latest video can only be done by a 4WD or a vehicle with the ZF9 and a 4.71:1 first gear. Basically a 20:1 crawl ratio is the requirement
It will be hard to hit some areas because of the gear ratio. But if you are interested in adventuring/camping then just go around certain obstacles. Jinn has video around hear with an older pilot with a 6 speed and you'll be able to see the difference in transmission on a relatively mild "obstacle"
Just as long as you’re not trying to hit steep prolonged trails, you’ll be just fine. There’s plenty of places you could go. Also, you might want to look into upgrading your transmission cooling. Get a unit that has a built in fan. You could even run multiple coolers. I’m not terribly familiar with these systems, but check out @Hondapilotoverland he’s running two transmission coolers.
I bolted the L brackets to the cross bars. I drilled holes into the aluminum OEM crossbars. Sounds janky, but strong winds blew the awning and bent those L brackets 90 degrees. I used the Leverage of the awning arms to bend the brackets back. No issue.
I don’t know, I have 76K miles on my odometer (really 81K because of my 2.5” taller tires) so I’m well out of warranty. Nothing has broke. BUT! Definitely consider a dedicated off-roader as a vehicle too! I use to drive a FJ cruiser, I just hated the daily drive in it. As you can see from this video, I’m kind of a big dude, so fitting into a Tacoma, 4runner and Jeep isn’t so comfy. I love my Passport, but it might not be the best fit for you. Something like a Jeep or 4runner might actually be a better fit for you. If you drive spirited, and the onroad daily drive is important to you, the Passports for you!
Because it inflated to 5 inches when firmly pumped up, I lost too much head room. The Thermarest is 3 inches or so tall, made all the difference! Also, I had issues with the valves of the Luno life. As you can see, the thermarest valve system is solid! The material is made of magic! Very high end! I think these mattresses are the same price now too! BUT, unless you have 50 inches of width, the thermarest won’t fit.
