VTM-4 engaged just before front wheels are steered from side to side. VST is ON. The video does not do this little hill justice, it actually is much steeper and deeper than the video depicts.
so it looks like VTM4 doesn't kick in right away, it needs for the wheel to spin considerably before it kicks in, not ideal unfortunately, because wheels spinning just means you're digging yourself into more problems. A-trac (toyota) uses a system that immediately kicks in by breaking the spinning wheels and diverting power to the opposite, too bad Honda couldn't devise something like this.
Do you think a MDX from the same year with SH-AWD would do better or worse? They're pretty similar vehicles but the SH-AWD is supposed to be more advanced
It would perform... Differently. SHAWD is technically more advanced, and would be better for most people who aren't very knowledgeable about different off roading techniques. But if someone is a more experienced or talented overlander/off roaders, the VTM4 system with the rear locker opens up many more capabilities.
did the vtm-4 kick in automatically in drive gear or did you drop it in low and select the vtm-4 manually? I have a Ridgeline and have never been in such a situation. Worked great!!
hearing those fans kick in gives me a sigh of relief. i have a honda ridgeline and my fans kick in randomly. the temps are good, i just think its odd the fans come on so often, so i guess its a honda thing.
I your 'VTM-4' light is on all the time on your dashboard, that means that your VTM-4 system has a malfunction. Check your ABS sensors as it would be the most likely culprit.
vtm-4 lock will only work less than 18 mph in 1 or 2 or R. It locks up both rear clutches and gives you both wheels driving in the rear. normal operation is front wheel drive unless the computer detects front wheel spin and then it directs power to the rear wheels and gives you a traction controlled 4WD system. the clutches are magnetically engaged therefore allowing a percentage of drive for traction control. it pulses the clutches to achieve this. way more complicated than the average driver or person can comprehend. this is honda's attempt of making their drivetrain idiot proof. unfortunately if you make something idiot proof a idiot will come along and prove you wrong!
Honda Pilots auto engage when needed for 4wd....The VTM-4 is like having 4 low which for extreme case when really stuck don't want be in high gear anyways low speed 20 mph less
Vtm is used only if you are stuck in snow or mud. 1st or 2nd gear push the button on the dash. Get out of the hole and put it back in D. Want to go off road get a lifted Jeep.
