When I have traveled in Japan, I have always marveled and been fascinated by all of the small, functional mini work trucks and vans that are produced. I have thought, despite our love affair with huge vehicles, that vehicles like this, and now this Honda electric work van, have possibilities world wide. Cool! I want one!

I was thinking along similar lines. I was thinking if Honda could electrify the FIT alot of people would want it but it but this is better. I love the folding seat idea as my daughter and I love to Kayak and this fits the bill. This would cause a meltdown with other cars.

Question: if you're taller than 5'8", can you FIT in one of these? Remember that the Japanese make their vehicles based around THEIR average population, not that of WESTERN countries. In the west, the average height is now around 6 feet.

@user-ig8lg9yo2g Well, since I can't find the site I initially used, and wiki agrees with you, we'll have to go with that. However, the point is the same. These vehicles are designed around a far shorter average height range. It's one of the reasons many Japanese manufacturers redesigned many of their cars and motorcycle models for the American market.

They’ll never sell them in the U.S. EU, or similar markets, but really, there’d be a pretty significant market for them. It’s a pretty perfect city vehicle. Hauls people or a ton of stuff. Many people would buy this as their only vehicle - one vehicle for everything. People in cities with public transportation and bike infrastructure don’t need to drive all the time, and it’s not worth spending much money on a vehicle. Maybe after the rest of the market collapses they’ll finally sell it to western markets.

This car would sell like hotcakes here in Hawaii: The highest speed limit on O'ahu Island is 55 mph, and that is for only a 7 mile stretch on the newest of 3 freeways... every where else on O'ahu and the other islands the maximum highway speed is between 45-50 mph. The State of Hawaii has a goal to be an "all electric auto vehicle state" by 2035. Right now there are a lot of stock Japanese K-Trucks, and K-Cargo Vans being driven around Honolulu and throughout the islands so... if Honda produced a limited run of maybe 4,0000 left hand steering versions for the Hawaii market, they would probably all be sold in a relatively short time. I would be one of the buyers, as well.

That car looks like a fun car to have. 120 miles is plenty of range for daily use. IMO, the US $7500 credit should only be for cars that are less than $30K. It would incentivize manufacturers to make more affordable EVs. Also, really glad to see Tesla cut some prices.

This is a brilliant little car. I would buy one to drive to work for 8 months out of the year and leave my suv at home. I could actually afford both. This would progress EV adoption. The Suv could be used in winter and on long trips or people hauling. I hope it can DC fast charge. I am sure it would not take long to recharge. I could probably plug it in at work and get enough power to get back home and finish overnight. This looks like the next original leaf.

@Byrnc To me it would be like the little mini trucks used on golf courses, orchards and other similar businesses. I agree that a little bigger diameter tires would be a benefit. These kind of remind of the old Le Car we used to see running around. My friend had one in high school. We could parallel park that thing anywhere. Someone was being a jerk one night and boxed us in. 4 of us just picked the back end up and spun it a 1/4 turn and we drove it away.

Most people in here seem to forget that you do not have to drive 120 miles in a day. In cold weather, in rain or with a load inside(it is a van) or at highway speeds and not in the slow lane, you are going to use up that range in far less miles. Their testing is probably not epa which means that the range will be much less. That boxy body is going to do horribly on the highway at high speed.

I don't know about other countries, but in Romania the incentives for purchasing a new EV cover at most 50% of the vehicle's price (if the price is more than 20k €, you get 10k; if it's 19k, you get 9.5k etc). You can't get your car for free.

I would love to have something like this in the US as long as it can go highway speeds but I know that is unlikely. This reminds me of the discontinued Honda Element we used to have here in the USA. Great vehicle, boxy looking, kind of 'short' compared to SUVs, but it had plenty of space inside and was priced below a similar size SUV. I would have got one if they hadn't discontinued making them around 2012. Just bring back the Element in ICE and electric versions and I'm sure it would sell quite well in the Honda line-up here in the USA. FYI: I think they sell a version of this in Singapore(?) and a few other places with a 1.2L turbo gasoline engine, so it has plenty of power for highway driving if you don't overload it.

If Honda can start making it, it is likely to be a game-changer for EVs and the salvation for Honda. It would appear that Honda have not bought the Toyota story about customers not wanting EVs, and have started thinking for themselves and looking for the biggest market opportunities. As several other commenters have noted, the market for these in SE Asia (and now Africa) is HUGE and will run into 100s of millions if they can keep the price really low. Replicate their early successes in the motorcycle market in the 50s and 60s. I doubt they will even try to sell it in Australia, North America or even in Europe.

A car like this, and the decade old Kia Ray EV are sorely needed. It irks me how dealerships and executives think they know what customers want in western markets - they're the ones who create the mindset through advertising to us. Japanese and Korean brands are too similar in competition with western examples. Eventually, the excessive expensive crossovers and no affordable and electric cars will be the weak underbelly for Chinese brands to take advantage of. And that's disappointing because of the greater variety that exists in domestic Asian markets.

I don't even care about the tax incentives or write offs, just practicality and affordable, not to mention, going greener than gasoline guzzlers.

Heck at $7300 I'd greymarket a right hand drive one into the US, tarriff, fees, taxes and all. Even if the government won't cut me a tax break, it's still competitive. I don't want or need an oversized murican truck.

I doubt this would sell in the US. The wheels are tiny and not fit for many US roads. You would have to parked it around the corner away from view. Range anxiety, no, let's talk imagine anxiety. Joking apart, what is the NCAP/EURCAP etc safety rating. It looks more like a UK postman Pat van. Having driven a lot of miles in 20 states in the US whilst touring, one thing of note is interstate and highway speeds. People drive fast and this little car, I would never want to take it on those roads. Local neighboured perhaps as the US generally are very safety and speed conscious. Min speeds on interstates are likely the top speed of this little thing. I can see it telling well in India though.

Wait a minute, a fully electric Honda Kei minivan? At that price? I sure hope they make it for other countries where we drive on the right, such as Canada, U.S.A., etc.

Unfortunately, with our US gov't banning Asian K cars due to their apparent reduced safety specs, I don't see this vehicle coming to America. U.S gov't regulations are the main reason vehicles in America have become totally unaffordable for most people here.

India (Tata and Mahindra) also launched few more SUV EVs just this week/month in their Auto Expo, a few good concept cars too, Just saying if you might wanna cover that, IMO, most of them looks really good, although, I am not sure if they sell them internationally.

I do not think they can sell this in the US because it probably will not meet safety regulations. Like the Wulong Mini ev, which can not be sold here. I doubt they can make a car that cheap that will meet those regs. This thing would be a death trap. I would never buy any such car for a second car even. Our second ev, would have to do long range as well. We will take out model 3 and our to be model y on trips both.

If Honda were to sell they kei cars, there would have to be modifications such as the height to the ground and the width of the wheels. If it achieves that, it could compete with the compact Chinese electric cars such as Wuling or Geely, they dominate the kei car segment.

This could be the start of a new needed change in our cities. Instead of bumper to bumper traffic idling fumes into the atmosphere & wasting resources as well as cash, imagine if all transport vehicles brought their goods to the outskirts of cities & fleets of these little electric trucks did their own delivery routes. It would be the same Business Model that Amazon uses except for all inner city deliveries. Sure beats 18 wheelers trying to navigate through city traffic to deliver a single pallet.
