It's worth pointing out that the S2000 bonnet is aluminium so it doesn't rust. But if you are installing on a body part that can rust, make sure you punt up the exposed metal. There's also locking versions of these same catches for those that remove the factory system, or are using carbon fibre bonnets.
Also something to note around Mighty Car Mods: we are normal guys and are not trained mechanics. We like to make interesting car mods and show you how we've gone about it, but we can't promise that anything we show you will work for your particular car, or that you won't harm yourself, someone else, your car or your warranty doing it. Please be safe, be responsible and unless you know what you're doing, do not fool around with very serious machinery just because you've seen us make it look so easy. Talk to a qualified mechanic if you are in any doubt.

Why did Moog install NOS? Why did he get a fibreglass bumper? Why hasn't Marty been helping? And why does Moog have a Honda at all when we all know he'd prefer to own a Nissan? All these questions answered and more... Please thumb it up www.mightycarmods.com/blogs/news/16607448-your-honda-questions-answered

Hey guys, When drilling metal, you actually want the bit to spin much slower. You'll make better, cleaner cuts with a slower turning bit.
@georgeisabeast111
@georgeisabeast111 9 лет назад
depends on the size of the bit, the bigger the bit, the slower.
@MrDeaz
@MrDeaz 9 лет назад
Isn't the speed more about overheating than clean cuts? You would smooth edges anyway
@Lobstersarefabulouz
@Lobstersarefabulouz 9 лет назад
Krede nah.. it is about the clean cut..
@woofer2121
@woofer2121 9 лет назад
you are right especially with hard steel if you spin the bit too fast you will just dull the bit and heat treat what you are drilling.
@mightycarmods
@mightycarmods 9 лет назад
Just in addition to this, because the whole section is being cut out, you don't need "clean" holes. It was simply used as a locator but yes slower is better - thats why we like Hondas - LOL

when drilling through paint make sure to put a piece of masking tape over it. it will make it so when you drill the hole the paint wont chip

Every other comment is about the bonnet, rust, and corrosion. So to end that let's explain it plain and simple so that everyone understands. *The bonnet is made out of aluminium so it won't rust.* Any metal that got iron in it will rust if left exposed. Aluminium doesn't have any iron in it so it won't rust. Untreated aluminium has good corrosion resistance in most environments because it forms a thin oxide layer that prevents further oxidation. So there's no panic or real reason to paint the exposed aluminium.

@mitchellcook9830

You should have coated the exposed metal in epoxy or plastidip or something to prevent rust, the first time it rains the rust will start...
@mightycarmods
@mightycarmods 9 лет назад
It won't rust. We stripped all the paint off the bonnet of our MK3 Golf then covered it in sea salt and water and left it outside and even then we couldn't get it to rust. But if you're cutting something thats not aluminium then yes, always paint the exposed metal (like when cutting parts in the engine bay etc) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s7Iv42AOZIk.html

Things usually have to get worse before they get better if you're not doing it all at once. I'm sure once it all comes together it will look sick. I made a stupid post in the other video, giving him shit about the mods, but then I rewatched the japan drifting movie thing, and I forgot that modifying your car is about what you want to do to it. It's your money and your car, and TBH I'm thankful as hell that moog isn't stancing his s2000. I really look forward to the finished product, and I appreciate all the amazing free content these guys give us.
@NathanSGuitar94
@NathanSGuitar94 9 лет назад
Yeah stancing is the worst thing anyone can do to a car. I hate how some of the car community will hate on Moogs fully functional track-ready S2000 and then say how stanced/slammed Skylines and STIs are so awesome and great. It ruins the driveability of a great race car!

In Canada, those latches would turn into a rusty disaster pretty quickly unless you put some sort of sealant in there to prevent moisture and salt from getting under the sides of the latch and onto the now exposed metal edge. Unless the car is used only in summer and kept in a warm dry garage for the whole winter.

@sabotshell
@sabotshell 9 лет назад
Unfortunately, from reading their blog post it sounds like that is not a near or long term plan. "Why don’t you turbo charge it? Marty and I don’t want to make the same videos over and over again. So when people say “turbo charge it”, while this may be a fun car to drive in the real world, we’ve just done a complete turbo conversion on the MX5. It was expensive and took a lot of time and neither of us feels excited about doing it again right away. If we wanted to get some internet cred, we’d throw on some expensive kit, expensive wheels, an expensive engine conversion, expensive interior then do an expensive turbo conversion. $25,000 later we’d probably get a few favourable comments, and then more comments from people saying we should have left it stock."

I think people are really missing the point with MCM. I have been watching them for the last 4 years and it is all about TEACHING us the inumerous possibilities of modifying our cars nad HAVING FUN doing it. If you come here to watch a milion dolar build with all the nice bits and pieces, forget, besides that they will never repeat themselves, what is the point of teaching what already has been teached? Some people are really mad at some of the modifications, i don't see the point either, besides that some of the mods, like the hood stripes are most certainly sponsored (in this case by 3M I guess). This sad, I wish Marty and Moog keep up the good work and keep having fun modifying their cars. PS: I really would like and episode on doing Carbon Fiber parts, there are kits outhere but I would like to see them being used madly by MCM

Just finished this project on my car! This video was super helpful. I know their hood was aluminum but mine was steel and was harder to cut through so I think my experience was a little different. Some things I would add for anyone doing this on a steel hood/bonnet: 1. I was getting a lot of smoke, dust, and fumes (fumes from the self-etching primer that was under the hood) so invest in a good mask and have a fan running. 2. I went through a number of the metal cutting wheels so buy extras. Also, when the metal cutting wheels start to get small from being worn down, set them aside to use on the tight angles later. 3. Needle nose pliers were helpful. 4. I went through an entire grinding stone between both holes. 5. It was hard to keep the Dremel from skipping even though I was expecting it. I ended up with half a dozen nicks on my hood but I was repainting it anyway. 6. I found the plate that goes underneath to hold it together to be a pain in the ass (hard to explain) so I just used the nuts and washers that came with it. Cheers.

To be fair, the updated youtube comments were designed to promote flamewars and trolling (No downvoting, but more comments = higher up) So this comment section is a just a hot pile of shit... It's really easy to insult peoples cars, so of course trolls on youtube do it, but on legit car forums and stuff like that, petty insults tend to be few and far between.
@mightycarmods
@mightycarmods 9 лет назад
I wish this wasn't true but sadly in the comments section it is. What I can say, is that after travelling to places all over the world and meeting tens of thousands of car enthusiasts in real life who actually own, drive and modify their cars, it's quite the opposite. People who actually work on cars and know what goes into it are always overwhelmingly supportive. Often those without cars or have never held a spanner are the ones that leave the most critical feedback because they have made better looking and faster cars in Forza. One day when they are old enough hopefully they'll experience the joy and excitement of working on something, no matter what it is or what the internet thinks about it. Anyone who hasn't worked it out yet that cars are a personal journey probably needs to go buy one then turn a spanner on it.

To some people, yes the front bar looks ricer and the bonnet pins might look a little plastic, but honestly these guys dont just do these mods to please the crowds. I have a sneaking suspicion that they also do these mods because it's what they want to do to their cars. They have their own personal preferences you know. Those are the best hood pin aero latches mainly because they don't rust. Pro tip: Always put blue painters tape on the hood and unearth hood. To mark your drill points. Reason, they way it's done in this video the hood can crack and you end up getting spider cracks in the hood. To each their own, you'll see what I mean in a few months

No primer over the exposed bare metal? A little rubber strip around it won't protect it from rusting.
@ramhoves

That's what I was thinking too. At least put a little primer on with some q-tips
@DeathMetalFunZone
@DeathMetalFunZone 9 лет назад
ty_ger it's actually an aluminum hood, so it doesn't need primer/paint. typically yes, you are 100% correct when working with a corrosive metal
@user-dj1hy6zc6q

DeathMetalFunZone So, aluminum doesn't corrode? Are you serious?
@RhodokTribesman
@RhodokTribesman 9 лет назад
+ty_ger aluminum makes a layer of oxidation called aluminum oxide that prevents it from rust
@ramhoves
@ramhoves 9 лет назад
aluminum does not rust you are correct. rust is a term used for corrosion on steel. Aluminum does corrode just like every other metal. Metal corrosion class 101 is complete.
@TheTubaMan2
@TheTubaMan2 9 лет назад
I don't think rubber tubing will keep air and water out well enough to keep it from oxidizing... and since the hood latches will constantly vibrate and jostle because of wind buffeting, engine NVH, and road imperfections a passivization layer will not stay in place over the course of time. Maybe a year, maybe ten, but that will eventually rust through, whereas a layer of paint would last as long as the car's body.
@BornToDrive1500E
@BornToDrive1500E 9 лет назад
Ok, but now, on the places where you have drilled the bonnet, there is some exposed metal and since some water can get there it may start to rust. I don't know but if that bonnet is made out of alloy then I guess its fine. You should have said it the video for all the people who have normal steel bonnets that they should put some kind of primer (is it called that way in english? the first coat you spray for protection from rust).

I know they joke about being gun ho with the drilling, but after you have drilled you really want to install the pin and make sure the bonnet closes easily over it before marking out and cutting a big hole for latch and screw holes. Because the bonnet is on a slant and the pins stick straight up sometimes the hole might need to be altered so it will shut just right with everything being lined up. You'd hate to have fitted the latch and then find the bonnet wont shut happily because the holes are off slightly!

It's worth pointing out that the S2000 bonnet is aluminium so it doesn't rust. But if you are installing on a body part that can rust, make sure you punt up the exposed metal. There's also locking versions of these same catches for those that remove the factory system, or are using carbon fibre bonnets. -MCM DESCRIPTION 2015

Actually instead of a race track mod, this can be used as a good theft deterrent if you install hood latches with locks. I find this useful in zones where the thefts use to steal stuff under your hood, like the batteries. Great DIY video, keep up the good work MCM!
@ZeroG84
@ZeroG84 9 лет назад
Did you paint the edges of the new holes? There is bare metal exposed to the elements under there and my guess would be that it's going to start to peel the paintjob on the hood real fast. :\
@dustye753
@dustye753 3 месяца назад
Just FYI, I purchased a set of these off eBay "cheap" and they were unusable so cheaply made they wouldn't even open enough for the pin to go in. So I guess I need to spend the $ on name brand, though I was disappointed that the spendy ones are still just plastic? Would have expected aluminum.
