That was a great demonstration of how to replace brakes and the tear down put very simply I have two of these trx 250 for 17 years and never had a problem but might need to replace rear brakes soon now I know thanks. 😀😃
Great video! The only one I’ve found that talks about the metal “bushing” that goes inside the cover seal behind the large washer! I couldn’t figure that one out until watching this! Thank!
THANK YOU SO MUCH THIS WAS SO EASY TO UNDERSTAND. Tore my 250ex rear brake assmebly apart today and part of it sheared where the shoes were held and i wasnt sure how to put the brake shoes in but now i do!!!!! You're a life saver!!!
Thanks for this comprehensive video. I just bought a 1984 200ES with locked rear brakes, I have a 1984 200S and I thought "Oh it will be the same" to fix that...took one look at the rear on the Big Red and freaked out. This brings my anxiety back in check much more doable, the rear looks exactly like this. Thanks again!
This video really helped the rear end axle on my 2002 Honda recon 250 was sliding out of the rear end ,I just put my bearings and seals on and it fixed it
I'm gonna be doin the same thing to mine. You showed what tools Ima need like a slide hammer, bearing puller, C clip pliers, and a rubber dead blow hammer. Thanks
Question I have How do you tell when you need to change the Back brake? My 2004 250 ex seems to be running fine and in a dry area of Mountains of California.I avoid Mud and such.
You really need to try to keep the axle from budging while you are loosening those nuts. If you could possibly have someone sitting on the quad with all the brakes on , and let some air air out of the back tires so it wont roll so easily. When the quad moves at all that is where all your energy and torque is going instead of to the nut. Also If yoo have a pipe to put over the pipe wrench handle that would dramatically increase the torqe you wil be able to apply to the lock nuts. Anyway. That can be very difficult to break loose. Keep on working at it you will get it loose. Best of luck with it.
Hey im working on a brake replacement now and am having trouble getting the right side cover off i think it may be the o ring you mentioned how would i go about getting that out
Yes it was a very good video and I understood everything completely perfect but what I'm saying is when I put it into first gear it goes into reverse I was wondering if I had turned the gear inside the transmission the wrong way or what's going on but I know my gears are backwards so how do I fix is there a video to show me
At 10:12 you are putting in, what according to OEM diagrams calls, a dust seal. In my Clymer manual it refers to it as a collar/ring seal. On mine, it has that seal you are putting in but inside of that goes a metal collar, and over that is another smaller seal. I've looked everywhere but I only see a black seal like you insert around 10:12. But what about the metal collar and seal that goes inside of it?
Hello greetings from Jalisco Mexico I would like to measure the bearing that apparently broke my sportrax since it brings one from a Nissan pickup, it is not one of those and also what is the measurement of the packaging of the
Great video! Quick question though: isn't there another seal/o-ring on the other side as well? If so, shouldn't you do both while you have everything disassembled? Thanks in advance!
On the left side there is 2 sealed bearings that act as a seal as well. If you buy a axle bearing kit you will get 3 bearings ( 2 left and 1 right )I cant remember if the seals and o-rings came in the kit or not. I bought the rest from partzilla there are 2 seals and 1 o-ring for the axle. I also bought a new right collar. Good luck with that.
Great job. There are no quality shops in my area so I already know they won't replace half of what you did. What should be a reasonable price for all of that on my 05 Recon?
All the parts for the job I did including a carb rebuild kit cost me a hundred and fifty dollars. I bought them all on Amazon. I do whatever labor I can because a mechanic is very expensive at the shop. I don't know what the parts for a recon will cost but that's what it cost for the 250 ex. good luck with that.
Hi I have the same problem when i press the rear break is makes an awful squeal can you give me a parts list to order off of Amazon to do what you did I don't know all the parts to order.
great video! I used it to change out my locked up brake pads but once I got it back together they were still locked up. any suggestions as to what I might have done wrong or what to check?
I would check the return spring on the arm that controls your brakes on the hub. is it returning the arm and disengaging the brake? Cable adjustments also. If that's not it remove the brake cables and if it is still locked up then it is something internal.
Not too bad for an amatuer ! axle jam nuts have thread locking applied at factory hence they are a pig to get off. Soft hammer would be advised when removing alloy brake drum.
how long did you have your 250 before you did this cause I got mine last year and wandered how long it'd take before I'd have to replace the bearings and brakes cause I do a lot of mud and water riding , but I think that it is sealed pretty well
Any chance you can tell us where you got the bearing kit and the brakes? Also, did I miss where you did the bearing on the other side? I'm about to do this on a 2003 and need to find parts, but the kits online don't look right. Thanks
OK, I bought an all balls bearing and seal kit from amazon, and I bought all of my Honda oem parts from partzilla.com. I did not replace the left side twin bearings ( two bearings on the left side ) because they were still good and I got lazy. lol.
I recently just bought a 2001 trx250ex from a buddy and noticed a clicking noise coming from the rear when I pull/push it, I was wondering if that is the axle bearing that needs replaced. I don't know a lot about them so that may seem like a dumb question but all help would be appreciated. Thank you
If the noise is only happening while braking it probably has something to do with the brakes. I would guess that the bearings may need to be replaced if it is a 2001. The sound is probably coming from the differential. Make sure there is oil in your rear. I take pretty good care of ours but there was Muddy water in it. Good luck with that.
The left bearings tend to way outlast the right side. You may need a specialty tool to get them out.If you pound them out from the right side be careful to not damage your differential in the process. I did,nt replace mine because they were not that bad yet. (even though I had the new bearing from the kit) Anyway. Best of luck with it.
What did/do you use to clean up the aluminum so well? My engine has that copper color now (brownish gold) and I don't know how to make her look new again. You managed to clean that brake assembly like new. Also, GREAT video.
I don't remember but I may have sprayed with pb blaster to keep the dust down while using the wire wheel. Then spray clean with brake cleaner. ( messy job ). Anyway. Good luck with it.
Hey buddy great video!!!! Went to do brake change and bearings fell out so doing it all but 1 question I see rebuild kits with 1 bearing then 2 then 4... Is there bearing on left side of axle too?
Yes. There are bearings on both sides. The one on the right side generally Will be the one that is worn out , But it is a good time to replace all your bearings since you have it apart anyway. Thank you for watching the video hope this is helpful.
In the aluminum housing? Kit has 3 bearings 2 dust seals...I know one is for the brake assembly as your video...I see another bearing on the left tire side in the swing bar .... So where is the third on right side of rear casing to the left of brake drum? Thanks for any help.
I watched your video but I had a problem with mine when I went to put it in first gear It went backwards in reverse do I have the curious messed up what do I have to do to fix it
Have a friend sit on it and hold the brakes. If that doesnt work then back the wheel up against something that wont move and try it again. A little PB blaster never hurts. Best of luck with it.
Mine were both still good so I didnt replace them. If I did though I would probably go through the differential with a bar or something steel and knock them out with a hammer.
Question for you, I'm attempting to do the rear brakes on my 2004 250 TRX and I got the cotter pin out, but I cannot budge the bolt the cotter pin sits on, on the end of the axle, even after heating it, soaking it several times in wd40. Any ideas?
Granitestateticketing Nh An air impact gun will take that right off. It is one of the tightest nuts on the whole quad . If you dont have a impact gun try to slip a pipe over the ratchet handle for extra leverage, with the tires on the ground to keep the axle from spinning . God luck with that.
lastmoto777 thanks for the quick response. I'm a novice so I don't have an impact gun. Any idea what socket size it is, its bigger than a 19mm (my largest), so I'd like to go buy what you recommend. Thank you for posting these videos. I'm not much of a gear head so I'm using the video to teach my 11 yearold how to work on his 250.
That is just called an axle collar . The side with the notch in it will go towards the outside, That is the spot for the smaller rubber axle seal.Good luck with it.
I just used a really small shaft flat head screwdriver ( like one for glasses) and squeezed it around the o-ring. I bought a new one because I thought it might get damaged during removal. Thanks for watching the video and Best of luck with it.
I have a honda 250ex the side with cable that runs to the rear end the lever that hooks to the shaft hanging out the rear end is broken what is the name of that lever ? I cant find it anywhere
IT IS CALLED A RR BRAKE ARM. this link is for an 06 www.partzilla.com/product/honda/43410-HM8-000?ref=d49bc4a756b4f5b9969d62f8a588c6203ddb560f Good luck with it.
Maybe, I think I would flush it with some cheap oil now and drain it anyway. Then put the proper oil in it. Dirt will just kill the differential. Good luck with that.
well mine was filthy and I flushed it 3 times and it was fine. Having said that.... the only way to be dead sure its clean is to take it apart and make sure it's clean. If there is dirt still in there it can do alot of money worth of damage.
Yes. You can press the bearing in. That's actually the better way to do it. Freezing your bearing well just make it a little easier. But you probably don't have to. Good luck with that.
+lastmoto777 yeah I have been having headache after headache with my kids recon. I can build polaris and yamaha no problems . this every time I get one part done another gives me an issue . not to mention our honda dealers know D&;#k on what they are doing ..lol
It's funny you should say that. I have the exact same situation going on here. Our local dealership is pathetic at best. That's why I work on these myself. We still have a Suzuki a Polaris and a Yamaha left. They are all far easier to work on than the Honda.
+lastmoto777 , this recon I got cheap with a 350d trade 06 250 es , fixed the es had a broken cog in the actuator, was smoking honed replaced rings, rebuilt carb. then decided because is for kids was doing brakes all around. axle bearings are fine but brake assembly caked I mean CAKED with dif fluid. 4 hours of cleaning replaced seals . got shoes on(found a trick but thanks for prior). put all back together wouldn't go completely on. then went on axle wouldn't move ... bearing bad. so another $35 later replace all that. then did your trick nope. this damn thing hates me ..lol friend has a press putting it in ..lol
For the life of God I can't get that bearing out! Mine broke apart like yours and I can't get that thing out. I've been penitrating oil like crazy. Heated it up and keep pounding away. I'm out of options. Any ideas before I go buy a new one?
Update, got a dremel with a reinforced cutting disc and cutt the bearing sleeve in half, then tapped a few more times and it finally popped out. Putting the new bearing in was a beast also. I had to put some grease in there after heating it with a torch and freezing the bearing.
+lastmoto777 yeah that was a days work. thank you so much for the videos. I'm not much of a mechanic, but I rebuilt the carb and changed the axel with both of your videos. the quad has been sitting for 5+ years and I got it running like a champ now thanks to your helpful videos! I'll definitely pay it forward!
Im glad the videos helped! Our Honda was not ridden or started for years either . Funny what a clean carb and a good battery will do for the Honda. lol. Anyway . Glad you got her running!
Yeah. I lost about five sections of video when I was making that RU-vid video. That was one of them. Sorry about that. There is pliers made specifically to take that ring out. But if you don't have them you can still get it out it's just harder. Just pry the one side out of its groove. And stick a skinny screwdriver behind it so it can't go back in its groove and just work your way around then pull it up with pliers after you get it about halfway around it will come out. It's a strong ring. So it's probably going to take a couple of attempts. Anyway. Good luck with that.
