Honda TRX250EX Quad Sport: Crank - No Spark Condition. Let's Fix It!

This 2005 TRX250EX has a weird problem, no spark with crank until the starter button is released! Then it will fire a couple times. Let's go ahead and diagnose, use the wiring diagram and figure out what the problem is. This is the same ATV where the float bowl overflow was repaired in this video • Carburetor Float Bowl ... . In this video I reference a circuit denoted by color and an “E” designation, on a ground wire. I mentioned I didn’t know what that was but in retrospect, “E” in these diagrams refers to Earth, which you often see in the Clymer manuals. This was a factory manual that usually doesn’t use that reference. Just to clarify.

Honda recalled the earlier TRX300 for this or rather they replaced a bunch of faulty CDI boxes for that exact problem. Just my luck, I bought a trade in 300 which hadn't had the CDI replaced under the recall/warranty scheme, so I had to replace it with a new one. Great to see the checks, people always skip the simple checks, refreshing to see! 👍

I am working on a 400x with the same, new module didn't fix my issue, but this video helped a lot!

I'm working on my neighbor's 98 TRX250. It has the exact same problem. However, the very first thing I did was change out the ICM, the Rectifier, and the coil, and it still does the stupid spark thing. This video is great. It was also right on point for point with my problem until your fix didn't fix the same problem on mine. 😂 I freaking HATE automotive and bike/wheeler wiring. I'm an Industrial Electrician and Maintenance Technician. I work on million dollar equipment at work that is way easier to trace and understand the schematics. This crap always makes me feel stupid. 😕

You likely have a bad "new" ignition module. If all the wiring is connected appropriate as to location and connected well as to the connection itself, the only thing left from my extensively long and boring diagnostics, was the ignition module. Return it and try another. Cheers.

i have seen the pyramid shape spring under the red start button distorted causing weird short.

I'd imagine that'd cause perhaps more of a no-crank condition, but I'll keep it in mind. Have found many bikes, ATV's and such with temperamental start switches, you'd think the manufacturers would change those to completely sealed weather resistant, but they haven't and probably won't.

i did replace this the cdi box but it was some china crap so im going to buy a kit off the internet and see if it works i havent driven it in years super sad for me !

I think I put the magneto in wrong only other thing I can think of! What happened originally was I ran out of gas and drove it 20 seconds without any fuel the next day never started should’ve been a ground issue but to late for that sadly

Could this be my problem with my 05 kymco venox motorcycle.i have crank no sparks at all.

If it's setup with the same type of ignition, sure. I've never heard of the make Kymco so I am not familiar with it at all. There are also numerous other possibilities causing no spark, as simple as a bad spark plug. Happens way more than one may think, even with NGK's.

Unfortunately, not without it in front of me. I haven't worked on this for a long while, I honestly cannot remember. I do know, there is a neutral switch which is an interlock, it won't crank or anything, without it being in neutral (interlock switch engaged). That switch is on the engine back in the transmission area, I don't remember unfortunately, where. You may have a broken wire, but could be several issues. I wish I could help more. I work on a lot of stuff, the older the jobs get, the less detail I can recall. Much luck.

I don’t remember you mean bodywork? If so, yea these ATVs all brands, fall apart as to plastics quite smartly.

You didn't watch the entire video? As I eluded to early on, it was the CDI box. I swapped with another good known one to be sure. It's all in the video.

I stay away from aftermarket electronics. They’re usually Chinese junk and I don’t wish to deal with warranty comebacks when OEM isn’t all that expensive. That said, if it were a real hunk of junk unit I’d probably try one out with the caveat that no warranties apply. This unit was too nice and deserved a proper unit. Thanks for the feedback.

@@MotoRestoFL can't blame you there. But when you are tanking 10 year old plus 4 wheelers I have fixed more than one electrical parts and such from caltric and have never had any problems and I have priced OE parts for older machines and some are quite pricey especially for Honda check out the price for a 1998 Recon stator and pulse gen Honda part and check out caltrics price?
