Hey Rod, I mostly like how u present your vids, entertaining ... Yes bin the pair valve system on a 5th Gen (Pre-Cat 1998-2000) yes bin the flapper system on all VFR's ... I beg to differ that removing the cold air intake (Snorkel) will give any BHP increase, it draws cool air for a reason ... cool air is more dense with more O2 present, the whole car/truck/bike industry can't be wrong, it's a pointless mod that many are duped into doing for no gain, other than the induction roar is way louder, removing it will allow the air box to draw in warmer air (engine heat) may even reduce BHP, defo no increase... Also water can get into the Air box under certain conditions ... (HONDA VFR OWNERS CLUB UK)

Instead of using a more damaging metal screwdriver, an interior/exterior trim piece remover (usually made with plastic/polymer) that leverages like a crowbar should work as well. You can also press & pinch the snorkel from the side to make the snorkel smaller than the intake opening, then pull incrementally while the snorkel is still smaller to get it out of the opening. It'll be more gentle on the snorkel from misshaping it if you want to put it back on at some point.

i removed even the flap with his plastic sheet from the airbox and now I have a big hole. it's really sounds great, I have more power between 4-5000rpm and the gas from the exhaust does not smells as unburned fuel like it was before. Also, I noticed that the water temperature is a little bit cooler now, but at the same time, after a ride I can hear the bike ticking from the hot, and I think the frame is getting wormer.

It actually looks like the snorkel funnels the air into the airbox better

I have an 09 model. Been looking to do these 2 mods (not the pair mod based on your recommendation). The only issue i have is that since Honda designed the VFR to take an x amount of air at a given rpm, wouldn't these mods upset the engine? Or maybe cause an issue with the valves in the long run?
@RodRidesWrenches

Think of your engine as a big air pump because that is basically what it is, just add fuel and the boom and you don't need the external power source an air compressor does. Restricting air flow in or out of your engine hampers performance. Honda does this to lower noise and emissions since the more air you can get through your engine the more fuel you can add so the emissions also increase but this is a byproduct of generating more or more power at higher RPM. This basic mod snorkel removal will in no way harm your engine or affect your valves. It will make your bike noisier and make it run more efficiently especially at higher RPM when the bike is looking for more air. Only downside would be in severe water monsoon rain or riding through a river; the snorkel will deflect large amounts of water or debris away from the intake of the air filter but this is not a realistic scenario. You'll see the intake for the snorkel is about the same height as the flapper valve anyway. Keep your airbox & air filter clean! The Flapper Valve mod does the same, allow more air through the engine, but at lower RPM where Honda closes the valve. This is strictly for emissions testing and noise reduction. The flapper has no other purpose than to fool emissions. You can always go back to stock with these simple mods.

@@RodRidesWrenches i've seen clips of guys covering the metal end of the flapper valve with tape. is it necessary to do this or not?
@RodRidesWrenches
@RodRidesWrenches 3 года назад
Doing this would not impact the valve operation after it is disconnected. The valves natural position is open, it is the vacuum from the engine that closes the flapper door. Some guys remove the diaphragm/flapper all together, it's not required for the mod to work.

@@RodRidesWrenches so you just close the air from the line that goes in the engine, and leave the valve as is? I also found out that the snorkel can be removed without any tools, just by pulling from the floor to yourself. ;) So much more intake noise now :)

Pair valve delete? Check! Flapper valve delete? Check! Snorkel delete? Not necessary unless you like the extra noise it creates in the cockpit. No performance gains

i tried this. Problems begin on rainy days with this modification, water enters the air filter.
@RodRidesWrenches
@RodRidesWrenches 2 года назад
Hello Turasv, Thank you for the feedback. I have not had this issue the rain must have been torrential since the air inlet for the snorkel and flapper are at the same height albeit the snorkel inlet is slightly more forward on the airbox. How much water was there?
@Moturem

@@RodRidesWrenches there was no heavy rain. speed 90-120 km / h for about 2 hours in rain. I have a K&N filter so the oil has held the water and water is collecting on top of the filter but with a regular filter it can get into the engine. I think the function of a pipe is to hold back water
@ace3bmw3
@ace3bmw3 2 года назад
An engine will burn quite happily a small amount of water. Water injection is a common mod in many performance vehicles. Also think of the ram air system in many hyper bikes from as far back as the 90’s. If you are flying along at 100mph the air is being rammed in through the front intake, if it’s raining that means rain as well. It doesn’t do the zzr1100 any harm.

IMO removal of the snorkel is a misguided mod. Without the snorkel hot air from around the engine and under the body work is being sucked in to the engine which robs performance, irregardless of the volume. The purpose of the snorkel is to bring in cooler fresh air from in front of the motorcycle which increases performance. Lookup "cold air intake" and have a read.
@RodRidesWrenches
@RodRidesWrenches 3 года назад
I appreciate you thought on this, really I read and value all comments. If heat into the airbox was a potential issue I would then ask you why the inlet for the flapper air intake is not snorkeled? The two air ducts are at the same height, right beside each other, in the airbox lid, taking the snorkel off makes an immediate audible difference in the air flow through the airbox lid. Try breathing through a straw then hold the opening in your mouth and remove the straw and try again. Rudimentary analagy but it gets to the point. Nice thing about these mods are you can try it, if it's not for you you can undo them without too much effort. Thanks for liking and subscribing! New VFR videos coming soon.

@@RodRidesWrenches When the engine and outside air temperature is cold the flapper is activated to bring warmed air (usually from around the exhaust pipes) to the intake to aid in combustion of the fuel until the engine temperature reaches a point where the bike will idle without stalling. Once this is achieved, and the engine reaches full, or near full operating temp the flapper closes and only cold air is utilized. My 1990 GL1500 Goldwing used this same technique, and it worked well.
@RodRidesWrenches
@RodRidesWrenches 3 года назад
@@DRiver-vl3um This is NOT the way the flapper diaphragm works on the VFR. The flapper diaphragm is closed below 5500RPM and the opens and closes when the engine RPM drops below 5000rpm on deceleration. The variable intake system on the VFR is strictly there to reduce low speed induction noise and assist with emissions. It has NOTHING to do with engine heat. This is quoted directly from the Honda shop manual; "With the engine speed above 5,500 rpm, the variable air intake port is open. With the engine speed below 5,000 rpm, the variable air intake port is closed."
@RodRidesWrenches
@RodRidesWrenches 3 года назад
@@DRiver-vl3um The diaphragm on the GL1500 called the HOT AIR CONTROL DIAPHRAGM closes off the air intake from the outside and opens a warm air port that routes air from the left side exhaust header to the air box. This valve literally seals off fresh outside air and takes in air from around the exhaust header. Not unlike an EGR valve on older cars took hot air from around the exhaust manifold and routed it to the air intake. There is a great illustration on page 4-42 of the Honda shop manual. This is a completely different set up to the VFR where the flapper diaphragm on its air box allows more cold air in at higher RPM and then closes at lower RPM.
@mickeymouse4897

@@DRiver-vl3um Incorrect buddy ... It's not a cold air flapper on the VFR, it's a vacuum operated air intake that operates from idle & stays closed up to a preset RPM 5,500rpm ... then as throttle opens more, the inlet manifold vacuum drops off & the flappers vacuum collapses & flapper opens, it's correct term is a "Variable intake system" so it's constantly opening & closing dependant on rpm above or below 5,500rpm & vacuum created ... plugging the vacuum lines defaults the flapper to fully open ... hope this makes sense? ... also there's no measurable bhp increase from de-activating the flapper, no effect on emissions either as some claim,, noise regs back in the late 90's drove this type of system into production along with "Pair valve systems" there's only an increase in intake roar from idle up thru till about 5,500rpm where the flapper would normally be fully open anyway.👍
