On November 7, Honda unveiled a prototype walking assist device that helps support the bodyweight of the user.
The new walking assist device reduces the load on leg muscles and joints in the hip, knees, and ankles by supporting a portion of the person's bodyweight.
The device has a simple structure consisting of a seat, frame, and shoes, and weighs 6.5kg, including the shoes and the battery.
The device is operated on a lithium ion battery and can remain operational for about two hours on a single charge.
Natural walking is achieved by changing the amount of assisting force applied to the right and left legs through the control of two motors, based on the information obtained though sensors imbedded in the shoes of the device.
Based on the know-how acquired through its study of human walking represented by its advanced humanoid robot ASIMO, Honda has carried out research on walking assist devices, and plans to evaluate the effectiveness of the experimental model in actual environments such as at a factory.

this is great! I have Muscular Dystrophy and I have to use a power wheelchair all the time. It looks like this could help me walk again. Please let me know when you come out with these I am very interested. I think it is great you are developing something for the disabled like me. Some healthy people never consider the needs of the less fortunate because they are so self absorbed and make such inconsiderate remarks as some have done here. Thank you Honda for the innovative technology!!!

this is great. I know lots of people with poor knees and they have difficulty walking. and for all of you who say it'll hurt you balls, it's got a comfy looking seat thats built like a bicycle. so as long as you don't sit on anything important your good to go. I'd like to see someone who has difficulty walking use this though

Sad to see such asinine comments. It's amazing that this tech is being developed. It will be able to help elderly, people with spina bifida, car accident victims, etc. I'm confident that people who cannot walk would be fine with the design if gave them mobility. And I'm sure the design will continue to modify and become less conspicuous. Way to go Honda! Keep up the great work.

But this could easily help to extend the life of those muscles, assuming you don't go all out and use it as 'regular daily use' thereby deteriorating your muscles. This would reduce lifelong strain on the muscles and could assist in the reduction of serious chronic back problems. Though I agree, not a necessity.

It may be a pain for some, but for those who have limited coordination of their legs, it may turn out to be the perfect safety device so we can resume walking. The support should keep us from falling and breaking bones if our leg suddenly doesn't respond correctly when we try to make it move. For those with permanent nerve damage, that for safety sake, has forced us into a wheelchair, this could be a real blessing.

It could definitely be usefull for factory workers and soldiers, anyone of the sort that would need to stand, walk, or run for long distances or time periods. Mainly though, this would be invaluable to the elderly and physically impaired. If you have ever known someone in this situation, you would know they would give almost anything to regain some independence and mobility. It would be a dream come true for that segment of society.

how sir? It helps those who cant walk due to knee injuries and bad legs go outside and live rather then stay inside all day and rot their life away doing so. Yes it looks weird, but you gotta start somewhere. Turning us into robots would be to reject our natural legs and replace them entirely, this only helps the legs, it gives you no other advantage except to walk better

Hi, I was affected by Polio when I was nearly 5-6 years old. About three years ago I've had surgery on my legs to make them strengthen. Though Doctors had told me that strengthening my legs will not make me walk as they'll be too weak. Now my legs are weak. However, I can stand holding on to something stabled and having part of my weight on it. I can take two to three steps before I start running out of breath. My question is, is there something know of to help me walk and stay stabled/not fall?
@GersonLuisLage
@GersonLuisLage 11 лет назад
Yes, I understand you but I think we have to consider that polio may cause a big variety of sequelae and in my case I can walk without support of any stuff but I have no strenght at one of my legs and in the other I have about 30% of strenght and I can walk on a bicycle too using this left leg for the most of strenght and the right one just do the balance... but it is just a curiosity... Thanks for your reply! Gerson - Brazil Skype: gllage

Next thing they will be working on is device for reciprocating forward thrust movement for reproductive purpose... know also by its other name... more vulgar in some circles. Anyway, are that insane that in the world of people with lack of physical excercise we want these type of devices? I would oonly see use by perhaps elderly people where excercise in gym is not an option anymore.

people who ask why this is here or what this is even made for obviously are young people with awesome and still functional motor skills for their legs... wait till they get old, they should sell these 10X more expensive... THEN they will realize what this is for... insensitive idiots... dont forget this if they become handicapped, sell them for 100X more the actual price for these people who look down on these... really nth much to say to these insensitive ppl...

Patients with spinal cord injury and other neuromuscular disorders will benefit in the future. Perhaps a rehab device too to stimulate walking. The financial cost of falls and deep vein thrombosis may be decreased with a device like this. In surgery all patients have a device that sqeezes the legs intermittently to promote blood flow, this device is not so far fetched.

I'm not too keen on this idea. It would be helpful for elderly and everything, but I think in the long term it will lead to younger people using this sort of thing, and people will lose muscle mass because of being "helped" too much.
@There-Is-No-Virus
@There-Is-No-Virus 11 лет назад
It wouldn't help polio because its not designed for polio. Its designed for the elderly who walk slowly. It would be possible to make a polio assist version but I don't think it will be done as they wont make money. Stem cell therapy would be a better option I think..

Either way those 2 are very cynical towards religion and authority and very apathetic towards anything that doesn’t somehow affect them. Add to that the short attention span and the need to tweet or post every aspect of their lives on facebook and what comes out is a very detached group of youngsters from their own history. Religion is not everything, get over it!

So, it's not about making anyone lazy...it's for people like me...I am disabled, and cannot walk for any normal distance, because of a brain condition called hydrocephalus. Well thats all nice & well... but do they have one that doesn't bite your testicles like it was some kind of a mechanical Pit Bull. In fact, if you need help to walk, get a Pit Bull... they pull you right along, nicely. Simply train him to not latch on to crotches & you'll come out ahead. Since this device requires that you put on its shoes, isn't it easier to simply use roller skates?
@Chuichupachichi
@Chuichupachichi 14 лет назад
What happens when you run to the bathroom because you have to go kaka really bad... now you have to take your shoes off just to go kaka? By the time you take them off, you won't have to go kaka anymore. But you'll need a new, clean "crotch biter". A "walking helper"... the only people that are going to buy these, are drunks. Honda ought to produce these as accessory upgrades for a specially designed "no swerve" Civic. Finally, drunks will be able to go places again

as along as you can actually put your full body weight on it then its awesome. id get one for long hikes like on vacation or going somewhere youre gonna stand for a long time, like a concert or a stadium.what would be even cooler if it extends out a backrest and a mode where instead of assisting beholding some weight,it acts like walking segway,primarily for when"parked".would be the bomb if you could sleep on it. just set up restrooms and a messhall for a large manual labor force. sleep outside

no, I read the whole comment. how could it look pointless at all ever. You're telling me you really at any point in time couldn't think of a point of having a "Walking Assist Device"? I just don't see how it's possible, it says it right in the name what its point is, to "Assist" with "Walking". In most parts of Africa, the negative impact of religious laws on democracies and human rights systems is clear and compelling from the wars, conflicts and anarchy in Somalia, Northern Uganda, and in the Sudans, to the threats posed by Islamism to the Arab Spring in North Africa and the peaceful coexistence of people in Nigeria. Again religious dogma at the core.

@imreallyjin the point is that it distributes the force... its much more comfortable to sit than to stand, and to lie than to sit, because the weight of your body is distributed accross a larger plane; from the bottom of your feet, to your whole thighs and butt, and from that to the entire back surface area of your body.
