Two big mistakes I see; Number 1: your sabotaging your self with all that weight on the back fender, you could opening the throttle more if you didn't have that much weight on back. Number 2: On a shitty trail such as this; Momentum is your best friend! Once you stop on a hill, it is 10 x harder to get going again. Since you not a very experienced rider (no offense) you need practice. My advise is, if you're going up a hill and can't make it to the top. Don't stop and try to start again, if you stop just turn around and go start at bottom again with a good run at the hill. Also it's hard to tell from the camera, but I get the sense you are looking at the ground right in front of your tire. Don't do that, always be looking 15-20 feet ahead and choose your line well before your tires get there. Let your mind Choose the line and your body will follow and make it happen.

Props man, really. I bought an XR650L with 1800 miles on it when I was 19, my first bike larger than a mild mannered 200cc dual sport. Barely tall enough, barely strong enough, and barely experienced enough to handle it, I wasn't too intimidated until I took it into some difficult off road the first time. It went a lot like this. I stuck with it, and 6 years of riding it later I can bomb it over, through, or around just about anything. The XR650L is a bike with a lot of room to grow into as a rider, both on and off the street.

Stand up most of the time on rough terrain. Ride aggressively. The XR650L suspension is mighty fine and can handle just about anything. Get a plastic tank and stout handlebar braces/bark busters. Wear protection for your elbows and knees, maybe chest armour. Have fun!

Are you using the stock gearing? I changed mine from 15/45 to 14/48. It made all the difference in the world on that sort of terrain. I also drop my tire pressure down to around 15-18psi on that sort of surface. I carry a little electric pump with SAE connections. When I get back to the road I plug my pump into my Battery Tender connection and inflate back to 32-35ish. My boy just got a lesson last weekend on why we let the air out of the tires when we are off-road. It's costing about $400 to fix his handlebars and every light on the bike. Oh, and a trick for turning the bike around in tight quarters like that. Put it on the center-stand and tip the weight onto the stand. Then back away in a circle using the center-stand as the pivot. Don't try pushing, rather, pull. It works every time, even for these big XR650Ls.
@FridaysTheBomb
@FridaysTheBomb 8 лет назад
yeah the gearing is stock on it. I have a 14 tooth front sprocket, but generally don't use it much because swapping them on site is annoying. I also air my tires down and carry a compressor now. at this time I had let some air out though.

Man, I'm 49 and I ride a '96 XR400r & I swear to ya' that after about 3 times lying the bike down I am so damn tired and beat that I can barely lift it up to get back on. I'm sure your 650 is heavier so I wouldn't feel too bad. Those rocks can be a REAL pain in the ass too. I ride in Eastern Kentucky, the old coal fields and there are a LOT of tricky rock, mud, dirt, and sand trails. Dirt bikin' WILL get you in shape! Great video man.

@trevorjameson3213
@trevorjameson3213 7 лет назад
Yeah man, that is some challenging stuff, but not impossible. I have ridden tons of stuff like that in Colorado, over a period of 30 years or so, and the climb you are attempting here is pretty much at the upper end of challenging, for anyone. But! With the right bike and continued momentum, it's quite doable even without stopping. I bet if you were riding an XR250R, which is MUCH lighter, you would have made it no problem, even crawling up in first gear would be easy on the 250 since 1st gear is a super low crawler gear on the XR250R. I also have a DR650, but I've ridden an XR650L like yours before (a friend has one), and even with my 30+ years of off-road experience, there's no way I would attempt that kind of gnarly climb on a XR650L, or a DR650. But you tried it and that's cool! Especially the XR650L, man that bike felt like a gigantic horse to me when I rode it! Cool bike though, I like them in wide open terrain. Great videos man, keep it up!

Give you props. Huge bike for that terrain. I had same problem with my Ktm 625 sxc. I was at holey Jim Ca trying to climb the mountain same loose rocks and huge ruts from jeeps and rain. I had 2 more hills to climb to top of the mountain. Wrong gearing my bike stalled towards the top of one he'll slept down and busted my knee. Trip was over. I'll be back once I'm healed with a lighter bike perhaps a 350 with a recluse clutch to keep me from stalling.

I just got an XR650L and the stock gearing (15/45) is insanely tall for offroad. I was thinking of getting a 15/52 set, but before I shell out the big $$$, I'm putting a 13 tooth sprocket on the front because it's a pretty close approximation of that set up. Lower gearing means a lower first gear, which you need, because first gear on this bike is like second, but it also tightens up the gap in rpm between the gears. This makes for a more enjoyable ride, since you have more gears to work with at lower speeds. So instead of lugging the engine, you can drop a gear, and instead of revving it out, you can grab another gear.
@rotccoyote1
@rotccoyote1 8 лет назад
For the crawling trails you definitely need to gear down so that you can keep the clutch out in first, gives you more power control. Those types of trails are about all I get out here. Las Cruces, NM Modified 1984 XR500R (primary) 2000 XR650R (being modified) -Rob Wiley

I noticed a big jump in my ability to power the pig (KLR650A) through rougher trails when I a) geared it lower with a CS change, and b) put lowering links on it dropping it 1 1/2". I was very hesitant to lower it and compromise the already lame ground clearance on the KLR. But the ability to get a foot down, even on off camber precarious spots, made a big difference. She takes dirt naps much less often now. Keep it up!! Anyone can power a 450 through anything. Takes real a stubborn JA to force a big dual sport places it doesn't want to go. Feels great after you do.

Nice video and nice try on that wicked rocky steep bastard of a hill. I read these comments and some of these guys are correct regarding riding up that thing. Enough riding and the bike really is like an extension of you. Keeping your momentum going (critical) and not trying to be too precise in your line up the hill will get you a long ways. I've ridden that bike and it is heavy. You don't want to slow down or stop on that hill or any hill unless you have to. This is coming from a 50 year rider who raced MX professionally in the past. Keep riding and keep up the great videos.

Love the determination for adventure. I agree with the gear down comment. Being able to keep the clutch out and use the throttle is important. I also agree with standing and gripping the bike w the knees w shoulders over the bars. I took a riding skills class with Shane Watts (you can find him on the www). He travels the country doing classes and they are totally worth the time and money.

Get more comfortable with your bike bud, it's very heavy (def noticed you were winded just balancing it) the faster you go you will have a better center of gravity. BUT always be careful riding alone! I crashed hard in the cinders (flag az) and broke my ankle.. couldn't get my bike back up.. had to call buddy and wait 2 hours till they located me. Good times! You'll get there man just keep challenging yourself while keeping a certain confidence with you and your bike. Respect!!

If you take a hand air pump with you and drop your tire pressure you will get up for shore. You will have to walk the track so you can make a mental note of the line you need to take. There is this rocky hill that one of my mates took me to at toolangi state forrest you have to run almost flat tires to get up it he has made it once from the bottom to b the top iv only ridden down it that was sketchy enough lol.

Where there is limited traction, lots of weight, the extra power works against you unless you can keep a solid momentum going, stopping going up hills rat-fucks you. A slightly softer suspension, not too soft, but so it doesn't bounce off things sideways. But you need to read the trail for spots of best traction and use them to keep speed going. Off road hills require stronger forward speed, and rooks are unsettling, but just look where you are going, go faster and let the bike dance a little bit.

Couple good pointers from other posters (momentum and look ahead). Add to it, stand up on the bike and weight slightly over front tire. This puts your center of gravity lower on the bike and it is less likely to want to lay over on you. Next, learn to feather your clutch. Use it to control power to rear wheel. Nice effort, trail looks tough with all that loose rock.

Hey I'm no expert (either.. lol) but it seems to me that you're sort of being too 'picky' about just where your wheels are going every six inches.. Go faster, give it some stick and learn how the bike feels when it's bouncing around under you.. LET IT it buck around and keep that throttle open more. You seem to be riding as though you're on a trials bike, tip toeing and being too 'precise', kind of. You've got a bike with grunt, use it. The suspension (which may need softening a little to work more) will sort itself out and let you float and skim over a lot of the crap you're bogging down in right now. Anyone used to a crosser would just fly up that lot. Relax more if you can. You'll know you're doing it right when your arms are pumped up solid afterwards :-) Great video, keep them coming.

You did great considering! I got a chance to try an older stock XR650L recently. First gear is pretty tall. The bike would benefit from some work to make the clutch more of a longer softer pull than a short pull. Maybe a bigger rear sprocket. Weight reduction too, since that battery is in a godawful location. Also helps if you have a bunch of dirt bike experience.

That looked very hard. You may have been better off going to the side if possible. You would have to try to fly up it but with those size rocks it seems a fall would be very likely which would kill progress.

bad decisions have a cost,,,,key here is to have several motorcycles,,,i have old honda ct70,,,auto clutch 8 speeds, step through frame, goes many more places than trail bikes,,,slower, but you can keep both feet on the ground if need be, and go slow,,,,no crashing,,,and if you do fall, you werent going fast so you wont damage yourself nor your ride.

Hey man great video! Shit is alot harder than it looks on video. Im sure at some point youll have a bunch of comments about how so and so could ride up it at 70mph on one wheel lol. Im loving your videos keep em up man!

Thanks for the support. Yeah this was extremely difficult. I wanted a challenge but this was way over my head, and you can only drop a 350lb bike so many times before you feel like dying lol.

+Friday'sThe Bomb lol ya man I know the feeling. picking up anything in that kinda terrain and climate repeatedly will wear your ass out. hey what kinda mileage/range are you getting with that stock tank? I was looking at getting one of these. I've been riding for 23yrs but the last few have been bikeless, since I live up in the mountains of ga now to good to pass up all the trails. Plus the xr is the only dual sport with actual ground clearance.
@FridaysTheBomb
@FridaysTheBomb 9 лет назад
+Carl Weis the bike gets about 41mpg with its current mods and I get about 100-110 miles on the tank before switching to reserve. I have a 1.9G rotopak for longer rides. I could buy a bigger tank but I'm being cheap.

Ya that would be a tough hill on any bike!BUT Standing on the pegs and twisting the grip is the key to ANY difficult situations wether its sand or mud or hills...its amazing what speed and momentum will get ya thru...but it takes years of riding feel OK doing it! At least you had the balls to attempt that hill! Most wouldn't! Those softball sized rocks are as absolutely tough as it can be! Especially to be that far in the boonies by yourself? Ya that's real risky....

Pretty much need KX 250 2 stroke and just blast up that steep azz trail :)) Love the XR 650L I had one and I want one now and I'm 56 years old , but I'm pretty young and kinda strong . I road all kinds of bikes from dirt to the old 750 Kawi triple two stroke Yes

Great Vids. Reminds me of the AZ Trail outside of Patagonia, difficult . 650L did better than 1000cc bmw dakar but I'm sure because of the weight diff. Had to leave after he punched a hole in a valve cover.

You shouldn't stop or slow down on the rocks. It is more difficult to restart if you once stop, . I think that it is easier to pass if you keep 20 miles/h and non stop.

No offence, but I think you were beaten before you even went on the trail. Mentally I mean, not physically or in your choice of machine. If you take an experienced off road rider with you, you'd do it no problem. I think you just need a few pointers from someone who knows. I'd love to have a go at that on my NX650 Dominator. Thanks for the upload.

OK. I'm convinced now, no more crazy off-roading for me! (I had a spin on mud last time). But good try. Um...HOW DO YOU KNOW you had too much oil? What were the symptoms made you notice? P.S. You can always put the bike on the back of a flatbed and finish the trip that way. That's how I did it! (Note: I'll probably try again, too...need better tires)
@FridaysTheBomb
@FridaysTheBomb 8 лет назад
+Barry Keaveney (citizenbfk) Its tough to get a flatbed to a location that remote... I had checked the oil before I started the bike, and found that is was "low". It didn't occur to me that a dipstick reading isn't accurate when the engine and oil is cold though, so I topped it off. On my way out to this location, it occurred to me that the oil level rises considerably when the engine is hot, so I pulled off to check it, and sure enough the oil was way past the top level of the dipstick. I didn't notice any running problems, but I was only on the road for probably 15 minutes. I have no idea if any damage was done, but the bike has always been running fine.
@citizenbfk
@citizenbfk 8 лет назад
+Friday'sThe Bomb Glad to hear no bike problem due to your oil level. I asked 'cause hassle getting my bike level to check. That road just might be too much. Maybe some guide might have rating for adventure trails, like they rate rapids. I live in Arizona, btw, and many abandoned roads that led to old silver, copper or gold mines, some roads not meant to ride no more...loose rocks like that are going to roll. Ice make you slip, etc. ... But, ride on! 🏍
@FridaysTheBomb
@FridaysTheBomb 8 лет назад
Yeah I struggled to find any information about the New River Mesa, or the trails leading up to it, but I did find a ride report on a forum about that trail, and everyone on that ride had made it up. I didn't have the energy to fight my way up it, and I don't think I'll be trying it again with this motorcycle. Maybe with a 4 wheeler or jeep next time.

That bike is too heavy. I use to try to ride trails like that on my DR650 with similar results. Trails like that are much easier on a TW200 which is much lighter and handles much better in the rough steep stuff.

I did the exact same thing on a DR650 a couple weeks ago in the Mojave north of Ord Mountain. Are you running a 14t front? Sounds like you need a little more grunt, but I'm no expert. Ballsy doing this alone. I had a buddy to help pick it up.
