Kaleidescape receives the master file directly from the studio . Kaleidescape creates their Kscape version from that master file. That is why the player costs so much. The hardware and software are relatively inexpensive. KALEIDESCAPE then gets to decide on the file size. All data for 4K discs is compressed onto a disc. Lot of compression going on , whereas Kaleidescape is using the master file for their version of the movie. Let me give you some real-world examples: Disney’s physical Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker 4K release comes on a 66 GB disc. The Kaleidescape 4K download is 80.8 GB. Disney’s Avengers: Infinity War 4K comes on a 66 GB disc. The Kaleidescape 4K download is 86.3 GB. And Disney’s Avengers: Endgame 4K comes on a 66 GB disc. The Kaleidescape 4K download is a whopping 103.3 GB! That difference in data files equates to audible differences. The video differences are noticeable but not as noticeable in my experience as the audio differences. The KSCAPE audio is more dynamic, punchy with much more impactful low end frequency effects IMHO.
You’d need to ask a studio for that directly and they aren’t selling it to you for anything you can afford. Secondly the sheer size of that file wouldn’t be worth the minimal increase in quality from KScape to full master because their compression is already lossless.
@@costafilh0 4k video at 30fps is 760MB per second uncompressed... So a three-hour film would be about 7.5TB. That means the 96TB server would hold about 13 films, not 1,500.
Yes and no. Some movies actually playback at a higher bitrate than Plex/ 4K Blu-ray’s. Plus you don’t have to put any nearly the man hours of ripping all the discs.
More bits of data from Kaleidescape than from your rip from a 4K disc , since the data is being compressed onto the disc. Would most people notice the audio and video differences on most content, probably not. This is for $50K and up theaters IMHO. It has the best user interface and the highest quality audio and video. Each person has to decide for them whether the price is worth it. If this product was $2K-$3K no one would be arguing the value at all. The price tag is what makes the product so divisive not the performance. The performance is unquestionable. Kaleidescape firmware update recently allowed for select blu ray ripping devices to be connected to add your existing bluray collection to your Kaleidescape catalog at a fraction of the cost since you already own the movie. There is also the ability to upgrade to 4K as well if that movie is available on 4k. This video will get plenty of comments about how the product isn't worth it. I don't know of any Kaleidescape owners who feel that way. Is there some confirmation bias?😂 Sure but it doesn't change the fact that the product is the best way to experience movies at home. Is this a " I won the lottery, let's do it" product for most people yes. I have experienced Kaleidescape in person. I wish I hadn't 😂😅 . It cannot be unheard or unseen😂😅. At $3K it would be a no brainer. But it wouldn't be available if the price were that low because the studios wouldn't give the master files of each movie for low prices. Don't be mad at Kaleidescape that it costs so much. Be mad at the media companies such as the Mouse AKA Disney, for requiring so much for the master files. The hardware isn't expensive, it is the HDMI licensing fees and the media licensing fees that makes this product so expensive.
@@litegaming_01 their movie/ file source. Also, some movies exceed the 80GB file size. Black Panther 2, Batman, to name a few so it’s further uncompressed than the disc. How much of that can you see. I think the Kaleidescape amazing, but I wouldn’t get one unless I have a dedicated home theater room. Buying this for my living room space seem like it would be overkill for me. An Apple 4k would be just fine.
Yeah, not to mention with most smart TV's you don't even need the Apple TV 4K box you have Apple TV+ & all your streaming apps right in your TV via the app store.
I would agree unless you have a dedicated movie room you are not going to get the full advantages of this. I love tech gear but this is way too expensive for what it offers.
@@FooFighter33 They wont support it because they don't need to. Their tone mapping, color grading, and overall quality is much better than what dolby vision can offer.
I have no idea why the movie studios don't just allow 3rd party devices to operate like this downloading from 3rd party stores. Ripping blu-ray is a pain and this is too expensive with always the chance the company will fold. I guess apple tv will continue to be my go to and frankly the quality is absolutely fine.
The simplest answer is, it is expensive to do. Hence the cost K charges upfront for the proprietary hardware. I have an Apple TV4K and while it’s great, there is no question that the same equivalent movie on K is far superior, especially on the audio side. People will do screen shots of video comparisons between ATV4K, Netflix etc, Blu-ray, and K but, the real comparison is seeing the bitrate of the movie while playing, it’s beyond smooth. Now, this isn’t for the person that spent 10K or so on their home theater, this in my opinion is for someone with a highly revealing system, source is definitely important but you need the gear to show case it.
@@guillermomartin8248 I so agree with you. Apple TV is ok for the most part, but Apple just killed home sharing so everything has to be stored either in their cloud or on your computer not an external drive. I find that very annoying. I am going to a NAS instead and use Plex. I will also get the streaming digital code.
Kaleidescape could be the Steam of movies and shows with dozens of millions of users world wide if it wasn't for this BS business model trying to lock up the service into the proprietary hardware.
@@guillermomartin8248ell a device for $10,000 that only a very few can afford when you can buy a NAS that does the exact same thing for under $1000. If they sold the Tera for $1000 they could sell so many more which means they could sell way way more downloads. The player isn't anything more than a Shield. It is only playing files. You can buy a Raspberry Pi for less than $100 dollars that does the exact same thing. Please explain to me how you think tgis is a good buisness model.
@@Bosworth123the NAS is a reasonable price given the hard drives they use - these are high-quality commercial grade drives. They make their money from the movie sales, not the hardware.
The biggest problem is that it isn’t officially available here. Yeah, you can make it work when you have friends in the US and use a VPN. It is too expensive for something that could break any day. My backlog of movies is in the triple digits now. So early access is not a huge factor, but a sweet perk for sure.
Nothing negative to note about the product?? This wasn't a review. It sounded like more of a paid endorsement. Most home theater enthusiasts are aware of Kaleidescape and what it does. But the vast majority of them, myself included, disregard the product as it's out of the price range of most of us. If Kaleidescape made something affordable for the masses with the same quality, it would be one of the hottest home theater products out there!
Trust me, I bet Kaleidescape is all that and a large bag of chips. The cost is just too prohibitive for me. I'm just a FedEx employee with 3 kids in college. I can only dream.
You sir are all that and a bag of chips for putting 3 children through college ❤❤🔥🔥. When you retire make sure the let the kiddos know what they can purchase for your as a retirement gift. No gold watches for you😂😅
What is Kaleidescape’s policy for content you own if the company goes bankrupt again and doesn’t come back? Do you think if that ever happens again will they or the community continue to support it? Any Kaleidescape alternatives that have similar features? Thanks
It’s a non-starter for me without Dolby Vision/HDR10+ HDR. It’s bizarre that they bother to exclude it when it’s likely on the master file they receive. They could’ve had their hardware just ignore it for those with projectors incapable of displaying it. As HDR TVs become larger and people skip projectors, they’re going to have to do it. Should’ve done it sooner rather than later.
Not to mention that you could buy 250 UDH 4k discs with HDR for the price of the player. Ouch. HDR TVs are going over 100” now. Won’t be long before they’re as big as most projector screens and have infinite contrast, HDR, etc., etc. Even those with expensive projectors will be considering the TV option soon.
So true, best guess they choose to remove those options to prevent having to pay copy right, make streaming more speedy, save a bit of room, and lower the chance of artifacts/technical errors
Depends on the price. The content has to be almost half the price that physical media. Because, once bought, you cannot sell. You cannot buy used content at half price or even less.
Kscape is definitely worth it, after you experience the ease of use, and huge difference in movie quality (audio/video). I can’t go back, neither do I want too lol
Found this on their website "The Disc to Digital view shows all movies on the Kaleidescape Movie Store that you already own on disc. Replacing these movies with downloaded versions has these advantages: Say goodbye to disc clutter. Once you upgrade your Blu-ray discs to a disc-free digital version, your system will no longer require the disc to be present in a player or Disc Vault. Buy once, watch on all your Kaleidescape systems. Movies and TV shows can be easily downloaded on up to five Kaleidescape systems which are registered to the same customer. Many content producers offer “disc to digital” discounts for upgrading cataloged or imported discs to downloaded versions."
@@johnday9346 So than you no longer have a need for all the discs that were bought, also, you no longer need the 4k UHD blu ray players! Is the picture quality better with Kaleidescape? There is a difference with sound quality! My issue would be the price of that player, plus what is already invested in gear already bought! A lot to consider.
@@camzane52 I dont know, I am reading the comments again and they say No Dolby Vision! Them having the mezzanine files has nothing to do with that. What is the end consumer getting? I dont care if it has a DV branding or not, but does it provide the same or better HDR contrast or not? How do TVs and projectors display it? Why wouldnt the presenter for this tech address this issue if its not a problem? When every single video out there talks about HDR quality, but nobody mentions a thing on Kaleidescape, and you see No DV! in the comments, thats a problem.
Sorry Zack it is not honest if you don't tell the bad parts, especially the costs. Its not just the player but the storage that is really expensive and with the file sizes you burn up a lot of storage. If I won the lotto sure I would look into it other then that it is a product only for a few.
I think it would be worth it but it is not available in Spain. It's a shame but not all the movies are edited in UHD and when they are, the dubbing doesn't go beyond 5.1. It makes owning a system that's a little out of the ordinary a little pointless.
What is the cost to access all the movies and shows permanently without paying per individual title? Also, does this include unlimited updates of new titles being added
It is the same kind of system as Apple just has a little better visuals and audio but you have to pay for each movie just like Apple. The price of movies about the same but the player and gear to get into the ecosystem is just really expensive.
I believe it is an honest review as well as a sales pitch. Zach seems to be a honest person but I can also be fooled but think he is an honest person. I've asked questions and they don't know if I'm going to buy it or buy it from them but they have always been helpful. I do think that with the new disc they are working on may make this not obsolete but not the pinnacle of what people want. The disc they are working on is said to be able to store an entire movie and not be compressed. Which means people with media servers will be able to get video and audio quality close to the Kaleidescape Kaleidescape. Only time will tell if they will be able to manufacture it and how much it will cost and cost with movies on it. Movies that are on 2 discs would be on a single disc. That would be awesome. Fingers crossed.
I felt like I just watched a max headroom video from the 80s. So many distracting audio cuts in this video review that I couldn’t focus on what was being said.

What I don't like about Kaleidescape is their lack of vision and/or lack of negotiation power with studios. Yes, they profit A LOT from the hardware but the business could be 1000x bigger if they ditched this model and supported any hardware and made the software available world wide! The hardware should be an option not the only solution. But I guess that's the level of BS we can expect from the media business and solutions around it.
The whole point of the hardware is that it stores the master files from the studio, the "Tera" server is there to store all those things and give you better movie quality. If they streamed this same quality to everyone then it would get so compressed due to the amount of people using the same files you wouldn't be able to tell a difference defeating the point of Kaldescape
@@Declanhale24How is the Terra any different than a NAS or any other hard drive? People who buy these things have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. Anyone with any basic knowledge of technology laughs at these people. You would think people would do at least some research before spending this kind of money.
@@Declanhale24 the only thing tera server does is run a lower powered server with their drives, and their os. If you were able to pay x amount of money and get this os on your own server that would be nice. the ability to get this type of service, without the BS of needing to use their proprietary systems would make this thing work for so many more people, especially the ability to be able to buy and download content right from the masters. Nothing would get compressed as its a digital download, so in which case if you owned this system you would be getting a copy of the original masters, same way anyone else would
Every advocate for this device argues that the Kscape serves better quality audio and video. Their arguement is that the Kscape allows you to download uncompressed master files. My question is this. Even if there is a noticable difference in quality, what is it about the hardware that contributes to increase in quality? It seems to me that if you were to play the same file using kodi you would experience the same upgrade in quality. What is so special about the hardware that warrants this price tag?
The original post here was correct but also the scam. K-Scape admits that the hardware being sold is not reflective of the price. They are not offering any technology that is better than what you can get from either a NAS or a player like Zidoo or Zappiti. The entry price pays the salaries of the company to encode a movie. Ever rip a disc to mkv and choose a file size? Not much different than what you are getting here. Keep the data size a little bigger than disc and use that to justify a claim of superior quality. Ever see a side by side comparison of disc vs K-scape? Either have I! Look, this is actually a really good product. The service would easily be accepted as a reasonable alternative to physical media IF the company was seeing any kind of return on movie sales. They aren’t. This makes the business model unsustainable.
@@stevewright1539the company is making money off movie sales. The cost the same as a 4k or Blu-ray disc - but without the cost of making and distributing the discs! Studio gets the same cut either way

If they would sell the equipment for a little profit then get the most out of rentals then more people would jump on board instead of just the super rich. I would buy it if it was affordable.. I know it does not cost that much to make these things..
Couldn’t agree more. There are simply too many other media players on the market that support MKV, M2TS, BDMV and reasonably good ISO playback for a fraction of the cost. Yes, you need the storage to back up your physical media, and yes it requires a little know-how (and a non-trivial investment of time). The UI and overall product are definitely good, but very few people are going to make the kind of investment Kaleidescape requires, and that’s coming from someone with over $20k invested in a full Atmos surround sound setup, not including the video side of things. It just doesn’t make sense, at least to me, unless you’re running a fully dedicated home theater that runs into the six figures; even then, it’s an awful lot of money.
Lol I do not care what anyone says unless you have a full dedicated home theater and each speaker is top of the line and your av equipment is trinnov or better this thing is stupid and pointless for any regular home theater. 5k plus for a movie player that’s slightly better than a 200$ Apple TV. Hey but whatever makes you feel better about your purchase. Do a blind test side by side and let someone tell you that it’s better than a Apple TV. Most can’t see or hear the difference. And also 8k is coming so is this a good purchase now. No. In a few years just spend another 200$ and get a Apple TV 8k and 8k tv 😢 for same price or less than this outdated box. No one can sell me on this thing. Honestly if I had a dedicated theater I still wouldn’t buy one lol.
If you can't tell the difference between an apple tv stream and blu-ray disc...don't comment. There will always be a need for streaming devices but for the best movie experience, even in a modest setup, sorry you wrong, blu-ray and this are the way to go.
@@carlosaponte44 it’s a very small difference. But hey a ultra 4k player and Apple TV are about the same price. I have both and barely use my ultra player. We’re talking about a 4-5k media player. It can’t be that much better it can’t be. 5k worth hell no. You must have spent the money on one.
@@cato12 actually I haven't. I'm debating if the ease of use and quality of life features to access the best quality are worth it to me in my current financial situation. Just can't agree with your argument it's not better or that it takes a fully dedicated home theater with only top of the line equipment to hear/see a difference. There is a massive sound difference from streaming audio to what's on the disc. Pretty sure Dolby has a different implementation of Atmos for streaming and for disc for this reason. To argue value is one thing. To argue something you clearly don't completely understand is another.
I mean getting the files raw straight from the studios. Sounds great but I can't imagine the quality gains vs released disks. Because the hardware is nothing special and the UI isn't that impressive. This is for rich people that can not bat an eye blowing money. I'd rather put that money towards a better projector.
Another thing I don't like in Kaleidescape and other services similar to it like Steam is that they call it purchase. You are not buying anything but the right to consume the media. If the service dies you lose everything!
Just so you are aware, those disc you buy, the media on it isn’t yours either. You aren’t free to do what you want with it, sell it, copy it, or anything, it is illegal in the United States via copyright laws. You seem to have a lot of hate for Kaleidescape however, you’re not providing factual information. Another thing, Ultraviolet movies locked its doors and went away, I didn’t lose my movies, Kaleidescape among others like VUDU provided a place for you to keep your movies. The same would happen with Kaleidescape although with how the times have changed I suspect they won’t be going anywhere as there business is thriving now. 4K UHD/Blu-Ray is dying.

Sorry, this is a rip off. I got 4K / Atmos from many movies - if the movie was formatted for that . Audiophiles like myself and many in the KEF community have already experienced the uselessness of "lossless " audio. I can crack a Firestick and get movies currently in theaters - for a while lot less.
@@BogaHomeTheater Lets get real - your are NOT getting lossless audio from those movie formats - that's is blatantly false. If you manipulate the native audio format from how it was in fact processed and recorded, it is not in any sense what is considered lossless. Lossless audio formats are most often used for archiving or production purposes, while smaller lossy audio files are typically used on portable players and in other cases where storage space is limited or exact replication of the audio is unnecessary.
