Join me as I ride to and through Shelby Park in East Nashville TN and talk about the pros and cons of the Honda Rebel.

The "not so reliable" XS650 can be made more so with an electronic ignition and 2 complete carb kits. I mean new jets etc! As far as the engine goes it is configured like a "Triumph" 650 from the same era. That is what makes the sweet vibration not so much of a pain. As long as you keep the valves adjusted and change the oil RELIGIOUSLY you shouldn't have a big issue. A friend of mine still has his and it has 82,000 miles on it. He did have to replace the cover gasket but that's about it except for the wear and tear of regular maintenance. Like clutch plates, brake pads and shoes, and tires etc. I LOVE that model dearly. It was my first tech job at my first shop assignment and was it a "Turd". I wanted to slap the guy for tearing that thing up like that but, I fixed it. That was 1982 and I was 27. Great vid young one. Keep it up! 😁
@justinmantell
@justinmantell 23 дня назад
This is true, the XS650 is legit bullet-proof mechanically, but Bugzy's specific XS has had a slew of electrical problems since we started restoring it. The GOOD news is that every piece of the electrical system has been replaced, and the bike itself has low miles, so it should go forever. What we have to deal with, and really the only thing left to fix, is Bugzy's headlight. We upgraded from the OG enclosed bulb that is every bit as effective as a candle in the wind, and switched instead to an aftermarket popular on the XS650 forum -- we dropped in a replacement rectifier a couple months back and it is looking for a switch for the light bulb, but this model never had a switch. Once we figure out the correct wire to jump from for the light to turn on WITHOUT a switch AND still allow for the battery to be properly charged via stator alternator, then we are finally going to be 100% good and ready for some longer rides.

@@justinmantell You always have a positive fall back to any power issue on the bike. There is ALWAYS a system power wire connected to the horn without exception. Most of the time the wires are orange and black or orange and green. One is always an easy to find ground wire so obviously the other is system power! Good luck!😁
@perustc9158
@perustc9158 20 дней назад
@@justinmantell I'd have to look it up but I believe the original light circuit was in the second position of the ignition switch. Can't swear to it as I am 69 years old and memory is trash in some areas. You might check out a rheostat to measure the voltage to the switch for the new headlight. Good luck!😁

Great video Bug, I think you should definitely check out the rebel 1100, its similar to the 500 but of course with more power. I know what you mean about the kickstarter, sadly most modern fuel injected bikes do not have them. It's also interesting that your xs650 has auto canceling turn signals, I feel like the majority of motorcycles (especially older ones) lack this feature. I also know you mentioned that the rebel 500 was too quiet for you but an aftermarket exhaust could easily remedy that for you, especially if you moved up to the 1100. Hope this helps and I am looking forward to your next video!

The 500 was the bike I started out on. I don't mind the lack of a tach; I've driven a stick since I got my license and I'm comfortable shifting based on feel/sound. The power was just right. But around where I live, with super bumpy roads, it is not fun to ride for long. It's not the seat but the suspension with its short travel. That to me is the biggest negative about the Rebel. (Slightly less of a gripe: the clutch case sticking out on the right.) Ultimately, it was perfect for beginning to figure out what kind of rider I am, and what kind of ride I want.

Buy the bike that fits you if you want a bike with 29 inch seat then go get one I don't need a tachometer when I ride, some people do. That's why there's so many different bikes. One of my bikes is a Honda Rebel 500 and I have fun on it when I don't feel like riding my street bob

Awesome little review and it's nice to see the smaller CC bikes getting some love. Personally the Rebel doesn't do all that much for me, the proportions seem a bit weird to me (like the Yamaha virago 535 does as well) plus the engine seems a touch uninspired. that being said, they are popular here in the UK, they are extremely well engineered and the Honda DCT is excellent if you're after an auto so i can completely get why they are loved. if you're looking for something else in the same segment to try i would try the kawasaki vulkan 650 or the Royal Enfield Meteor 650, both are within the same segment as the Rebel (imho) and are seen as equals but are both very different bikes and i would like to see what you think is the best.
@BugzyXS
@BugzyXS 26 дней назад
I'm going to look into those bikes you mentioned, maybe I can rent them or go for a test ride! Uninspired is a good way to put it, I was kinda thinking maybe I'd get bored with a bike like the Rebel. Thanks for watching:)

The original slipper clutches were built with release ramps, which would let go if the wheel tries to drive the engine too hard. The intention there was to prevent rear wheel skipping on aggressive downshifts. It worked so well on track, that it got rolled out to road bikes. The assist & slipper clutch is the natural development of the original slipper, with tightening ramps which squeeze harder the when the engine is driving the wheel hard. Up until that point, the springs were doing all the work of keeping it engaged. Now that it is self-locking in this way, you need a lot less spring to do the job, hence lighter lever. It's very nice, but to some people they feel a bit wrong.

I have a 2022 Rebel 500. The reason there is no kick start is that fuel injection requires a battery to squirt the fuel into the cylinder. You can kick start a fuel injected bike with a dead battery and never get it to start. The small gas tank, 2.9 gallons, is a big draw back of this bike. The mirrors do not hang out far enough to see past your arms. The seat is too low; it is 27 inches. I wish it was 29 inches. You are correct about not having a tachometer. My cheap scooter has a tach. Come on Honda.sixth gear should be lower geared for better fuel economy on the freeway.

@@2strokecarbtuningportingin187 I think I am the only one who ever bought a (used) Harley and thought it was too loud and put baffles in the exhaust. Bugzy looks like 👍 the Honda Rebel is for you. You don’t need a tachometer to know when to shift. Just listen to the engine, when it’s sounds like engine is starting to strain shift up to the next gear. They make after market exhaust for the Rebels. There is a 1100cc Rebel that probably weighs almost the same as the 300cc So the only problem for you would be the blinkers.😎Dave H

@@BugzyXS Most cruiser bikes don't have tachs anymore. Sport bikes do, since they are ripping thru the gears. Cruisers are for just "putt-putt-putting" along and usually aren't high reving anyway.

Try an SCL500 next. It uses the same engine, but it's more versatile and has a standard riding position. Consider a skidplate and some DOT knobbies for it. I'd also consider a lower muffler, if you want to use saddlebags for luggage.
@pcthayer
@pcthayer 21 день назад
I would love to try one of them out. My most fun bike of all time was my 1984 Honda VT500 Ascot (flat tracker style). The SCL500 is the closest bike I can think of similar to that bike. (Unless you get into big bucks with the Indians or Ducatis). I know the guy on the youtube channel Life of Burch has one and seems to ride that bike more than his other bikes so assume it is his favorite (although he mentioned he wanted the Indian FTR but it cost too much.)

BTW...think the SCL500 is geared a little lower too, so has a little more zip off the line.

Not too many bikes have kickstarts anymore. The latest one I saw was the Yamaha SR400 and it only had a kickstart and no electric start. (I believe 2021 was the last year of production.) (Another pro on the Rebel is the fuel injection, no carbs.) There is a youtube channel Life of Burch and he has picked up some used Rebel 500s at decent prices (just got one for his girlfriend) but the used Rebels seem to hold their value pretty well. (He put some loud pipes on his too, if you don't like quiet bikes.)
