This MV has soooo many different meanings behind it. I think it’s about a toxic relationship. In front of other people, they were such a lovely and romantic couple and the man pretends to be a perfect boyfriend material but behind the scenes, he is very indifferent and hurts her a lot. But the girl longs to be loved so she can’t control herself and stop herself from loving him even though she knows well that this is a toxic relationship. In the end everything comes out and people only see her as a crazy person doing a solo performance for being so absorbed in her role, even the man just stood indifferently clapping his hands while watching her struggle and expose herself under the scrutiny of people. Besides the love story, due to the fact that Taeyeon is the person who has written the lyrics for this song, I think it’s reflects exactly her real life and what she has been struggling and coming over so far. In the stage she is a happy and dreamy girl, however behind the scenes she has so many sorrows and pains and a broken soul. When the love story was exposed, the media only focused on questioning and excavating the injured girl without paying any attention to the man. This reflects not only Taeyeon's true story but also the general situation of Kbiz where the criticism is only directed at the women. And at last when Taeyeon is honest with herself and shows everyone her true person filled with pains, anger and depression, they still just think she's acting and throw roses at her, which represents that public speech can be a double-edged sword, they say it’s good for her but actually the thorns of the roses only leave her with scratches. But in the end she still smiles, maybe it shows that she has been stronger enough to face the public.

As expected Taeyeon killing us with her God-tier vocals and acting!! She is untouchable! Once you stan any SM artist it means you have a great taste for music.

Taeyeon's injuries in "Can't Control Myself" are caused by the roses that the public throws at her when congratulating her and is a metaphor for what idols suffer; they constantly receive bad comments and criticism disguised as "simple opinions". Even if they don't show it, those hateful comments hurt them, but at the end of it all they have to smile at others and move on. The public that one day loves them so much can also hurt them and cause others to hate them at the slightest mistake they as idols make.

I love how the lowering of the melody in the bridge lead the line “I will go back to you again” because she knew she was in toxic relationship 💔💔💔

I can't explain how happy it makes me to see Aaron so excited about Taeyeon's comeback, Taeyeon really exceeded expectations, her acting skills are impressive, now she not only conveyed with her voice but also with her eyes, her facial expressions, just woow I love that she always challenges herself and brings us completely different things, The last scene is super deep for me, Taeyeon took off her wig, she is the one who is exploding on stage but people still see it as a performance and they throw roses at her, which cause wounds all over her face and body, for me this means that people's words are double-edged, they can be innocent or only pretend to be to attack and hurt you like they did with Tae People rely on saying simple opinions but they really don't know the effect those opinions have on idols, and in the end Tae, despite her injuries, smiles as if nothing happened. Taeyeon came back with everything im ready for her 3rd gull album 😍👏♥️

It’s literally their standing ovation in the light of her suffering for me. While she’s breaking down, hurting, they’re clapping. It’s her everyday life as a k idol. I love her and her artistry honestly

I think people always expected that when it comes to Taeyeon's music, there should be a crazy and explosive high note since she's really good at it but contrary to that, Taeyeon herself wanted to try a variety of style and genre everytime she released a new song. Her high notes are impressive of course but her calm and low voice are as charming as her high notes. Even without those crazy high notes, she managed to deliver the message of the song, -- 'the pain of being in a relationship that only appeared beautiful in front of other people. In reality, it gave nothing but pain to her. The worst part is that she could not escape the hellish cycle of their toxic relationship because she's not the one in control of her life'

For me, I think the MV is about one's life under the limelight..the perfect life in front of the camera and the opposite behind. Then even if they show what's happening in their life, good or bad, people will just say that they're doing good with their job. As I remember Taeyeon unnie said before about the pressure she always feel but people still expect her to do good like they think she doesn't need to be sad, or to feel bad. Idols and other celebrities are all human, they all have feelings...that's how I see this MV even the lyrics...thanks for reacting to this...

I have to agree with the pinned comment. I think it definitely symbolizes a very toxic, abusive relationship, the man being the abuser. They're in a relationship behind the scenes and he's constantly berating her by calling her crazy, etc. Also I don't know if you noticed but at 4:25 he throws the vase at her and it shatters near her head, hence his very angry, mean facial expression. I think when they're on stage, it represents how when you're in an abusive relationship of any kind the abuser puts on this façade and acts kind and sweet, and you have to go out in public and act like everything is totally fine, which is extremely accurate and happens all the time in abusive situations. And towards the end, she breaks down and essentially loses her mind in front of all these people, and they think she's just acting (which unfortunately happens in a lot of abusive relationships as well, the victim is hardly ever believed and if they are they're questioned about everything), and he is standing there clapping which to me symbolizes him laughing at her and mocking her pain, which he caused. It's extremely deep but I love that she touched on the subject of abuse and manipulation because those issues aren't addressed enough in my opinion.

I felt this song because this was exactly what happened in my previous relationship. We were happily in love at the time, but gradually became toxic. I opted to stay in our relationship because I loved my partner so much, although I was suffering and having a very hard time. I couldn't help but feel helpless, despite the misery he had caused me. I keep coming back to him as if nothing has happened. It felt like I was in a loophole because that toxic relationship repeated over and over again. Madly in love-suffered-mentally tortured-comeback. I was exhausted physically and mentally, and I also felt hoarse and unable to speak. I couldn't even tell him I didn't want to keep going, and I was fed up with the situation. He enjoys downplaying everything, and he seems satisfied to see me in pain. Everyone thinks we were meant for each other because everyone else saw it that way. However, they were unaware that our connection was very different from what they had imagined. :) It was a four-year relationship. And now I'm relieved since I've gotten rid of that nightmare. I was blind at the time because I believed that love could repair all that had been damaged, but I am now capable of standing alone. Freed from a toxic relationship. I am no longer associated with mental torment. I don't want to be chained. This song has a lot of meaning, and I hope everyone can learn something from it.

At first I didn't get the message of the video but seeing it more and reading the comments now I understand a little and wow it's deep, sad but at the same time beautiful and knowing that she participated in the lyrics makes it even better. She´s an amazing artist

Let me just share my understanding in the song and the music video. at the beggining, when taeyeon is in the train station, you can see a sign that says "stop on red signal", but the ligths are giving mixed signals as it continues to change between green and red, representing how Taeyeon wants to stop the relationship but can't control herself, so she comes back to him everytime the book on her room is Only Time Will Tell by Jeffrey Archer, don't think the plot has much to do with the MV but the title might represent the open ending, since we don't know if she ends up breaking up with him or not. this quote from the book does seem to represent her situation pretty well tho "If you make a deal with a fool Don't be surprised if they act foolishly" The wounds she has on her body are due to the roses thrown by the audience. You can see in this scene how a rose make a scracth on her nose.

Rose is nice but to someone is hurtful in certain way. I can see that the audience applauses by throwing their roses (compliment) is hurtful to Taeyeon because she tried to express her real emotion & expression to her 'lover' but is like a show to the audience. Thats why Taeyeon got scars on her body (from the roses' thorns), seems no one see her real thing. At the end, she gave up? before the curtain closed.

I like how he often kinda defend and say somethin like, 'if you don't want a lot of pause, there's a lot of other videos' when he's reacting to Taeyeon's music.

The mv tells an interesting story about staying in a toxic relationship, a narcissistic lover, and the aftermath of a breakup. The couple tries to look okay and perfect in front of other people but when they're alone they're actually not happy. This is because of the guy's narcissistic actions and only understands himself and does not try to understand the girl's feelings at all. The girl feels miserable about the guy's unfair treatment and is aware of how toxic the relationship is but both cant seem to end their relationship. The guy doesn't want to let the girl go and wins her over and the girl cant help herself but still stays with him because she truly love him as shown in this part 1:30. The scene shows how they are blinded that they are in love but they are really not as the guy's treatment does not change at all, still narcissistic, and selfish, which shows how their relationship turned out to be so exhausting and helpless as shown in 1:46, especially on the girl's side. Now the girl finally decided to end their relationship and leave the guy as shown in 1:56 where the people with a cake and candles represent her friends/family to comfort her and congratulate her on being free from the toxic relationship. But as you can see she is still not happy at all and still lingers for the guy's presence. Now the cameras flashing represent the torment, the anxiety, the pressure she feels (from other people and from herself) after the breakup feeling like the blame is on her and that she is the reason for her misery while the guy is not affected at all. But the girl is still too blinded by the love and decided to go back to the guy in 2:47, but no matter how she tries to explain her side to the boy and fix his rotten personality, he still hasn't changed at all. The people cheering 2:59 represent how the guy has twisted the situation in his favor playing the victim. And the cycle of the girl being in a toxic relationship, putting up with his overly conceited lover, being miserable and exhausted goes on and on as the end of the video is exactly the beginning of the video where she just brushes off her own sufferings and continues the relationship. The smile at the end could mean the hope that the guy would change and their relationship could be saved. :( Or another interpretation at the end would be that the girl finally moves on from the guy as their relationship ring is left in the bathroom in 3:11 and that she already realized her worth showing the girl's face with a smile at the end. The only time she truly felt happy.

i interpreted it as an issue of domestic violence. "you call me crazy, so what" like how the abusers victim blame to get into the victim's head, like they'll never find another partner who will love them as much, that their partner is doing it for their own good and for the good of their relationship, etc., so they'll start to overthink or think that they're not doing enough--thus "deserving" of the abuse they're experiencing. and the line where it said that the victim will still go back to the person they're referring to in the song, it's how the victims of domestic violence undergo this cycle of still going back to their partner instead of ending their relationship and reporting their partner to the authorities or something. i've watched the mv a couple of times but i just had this thought while watching your reaction as i get to pay more attention to certain details which i may have missed the first few times. also, i really like this sound and i'm excited how the entire 3rd album will sound like. if they'll sound cohesive and everything is similar to can't control myself, sonically, then i'll say it right now, even if i haven't heard of it yet, that that is my favorite taeyeon album. it's so insane thinking of her growth since my voice. when it was released, i thought, "how will she top this?" then boom, purpose came out, and now we'll have kty3! but yeah, i understand that not people can't like every song from an artist and that's fine! i have a few as well but that doesn't make me love my favorite artists less. sorry to pour this out here, i just have nowhere else to express my thoughts and feelings for this song and taeyeon in general lol

My interpretation is that it highlight an abusive relationship where when they are on stage it like irl outside people will see them as a happy couple but in reality its abusive and when she wanted to tell the world, everyone tell her shes crazy and didnt believe her because they look happy together . And their relationship continues since she cant get out from the relationship. I guess this is a reality where this days people who got abuse ,cant really get out because some wont believe them. And call them crazy instead.
