Spidey: "Oh I got the thing on the thing! What did I win?" Rhino: "YOU!" Spidey: "I win me? That makes no sense." Always makes me laugh! Josh Keaton IS Spider-Man/Peter Parker.
I wish Disney would just try to stop making their animated shows to look like the MCU. What's so good about their animated shows is that they are allowed to use all their heroes. Maybe one day they'll give us a good animated Fantastic Four in the modern age.
We had an FF cartoon back in 2006, which wasn't bad (has some of the first season of the 1994 version feel, but still). That's probably the last time we're gonna see an FF cartoon until Fox finally realizes they have no clue how to reboot it and give up on it in about 20 years.
I felt so bad when Eddie became Venom. He was such a stand up guy and it broke my heart to see him slowy descend into anger and hate. He had to deal with some tough circumstances that make you understand why he became Venom. Still, it doesn't excuse him wanting to ruin Peter's life and endangering innocent people but I wish we could have seen a redemption arc if the show wasn't cancelled when Eddie forgives Peter, let's go of the symbiote, and returns to being the good man he originally was.
Peter Parker was a grownup adult with a wife for many many years in the comics. Yes he started as a teenager in highschool but that wasnt what defined his character, its just whats popularly associated with him. If anything defined him it was growth; he was one of few heroes allowed to actually grow up and mature. At least until One More Day pissed it all away because the execs thought being married made Peter unrelateable ...
I won't disagree that it's amazingly craptastic with what happened with OMD, but pissed it all away is far from what the results have been. The Spidey line is the strongest it's been in ages and I hate saying it but part of it is him being single again and finding new relationships. Many of the newer characters created have been pretty strong and the major storylines have been pretty entertaining. I had sworn off Spidey for for a few years until I took a glance at an issue and found myself drawn back in. Heck we now even have an alternate take with the "ASM: Renew Your Vows" title that not only has him still married to MJ but has his daughter alive and well too. It sucks that it's not the classic Pete in that situation but it's still good to see Marvel is willing to do things people want while doing their own thing. But with all the crazy cool stuff that's gone on since OMD, I do think it's worth checking things out.
Yes, he best stories begun there, there isn't a single debate on that. That moment, it was when Spidey got increadible, but what made him popular it's that he was a kid like any other teenager, and with his character having so much stories under his belt. Something that i can appreciate, it's a take on his highschool years while using his future stories, in an adaptation to give it more life. I would love for another take on his collage years, after having so many stories of Peter in highschool in an animated form(And that the ones after this one, they are so lackluster). But with this time and age, i see it less likely and very sad. So, i just hope for another one, with a new fresh and good take on Spidey himself close on level with this one.
Focusing on a collage aged Peter Parker is understandable when it comes to selling merch to a young audience. But you only have so much time before you need to reboot the same story all over again. Remembered the 90s cartoon when Spider-Man teamed up with the X-men, travelled to distant planets and met other versions of himself in alternative dimensions?! Its why I watch Ultimate Spider-Man. That show just utterly embraces it's comic book plots
So if Disney actually was ready to put in the effort we could have had a shared universe of Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, The Spectacular Spider-Man, and Wolverine and the X-Men.
Marvel owns the spider man characters now, but they don't own the rights to the actual show, sony kept them. So legally, this show can never be continued sadly. 😭😭
Awesome Productions disney should get the rights to the series since they have enough money if they don't waste their money on shitty reboots trying to copy the series but in their way
Disney owns full rights to making Spider-Man cartoons, and there's an agreement that Sony isn't allowed to continue their past projects. So, a third season won't happen unless Disney green-lights one ( which is unlikely since they just released their own new Spidey show ).
That Flash Thompson gets better and his background is expanded around the time he gains the Venom Symbiote. Sure he sounds like a fucking doofus but he's not 1 dimensional. Now let's not talk about Homecoming's Flash which is just fucking stupid and borderline pandering because weh Classism (better save myself before everyone else because I'm too rich to act like a fucking human being hurf durf punjabi)
Greg Weismen keeps getting screwed. He basically gets kicked off of his own show with Gargoyles, Young Justice ended because of a lack of action figure sales, and this show gets canned when they still had a lot to get to.
The Weisman Curse is a scenario when a show is good but gets canned after only two seasons. This can be due to many reasons but executive meddling or lack of toy sales tend to be the most common.
In all fairness, when people say that "Tom Holland is the best Spider-Man", I think they're referring to the live action movies. In that regard, he is the best. But if you take the animated TV shows into account, TSSM had the best Spider-Man.
Yeah, yeah, limited time and all, but still feel it's a crime captain George Stacy doesn't get even get mentioned here. Not only was a regular supporting character in the show (whereas in other adaptations he'd make some cameo at best), but he became somewhat of a father figure to Peter. He makes it clear to both Peter and Spidey he knows his identity (partially thanks to Venom's failed scheme) and starts helping him on both fronts, coming up with stories as to why Pete would have to disappear. He became the commissioner Gordon to Spidey's Batman and this dynamic would've only gotten more developed had the show not been canceled. Also, he was voice by Lex Luthor, you can't get better than that.
Peter's actions can't be justified because he is a super hero but, they can be justified. He was working as an unpaid intern and needed to pay his aunts bills. No one would have helped him with that so he helped himself. He was vilified for wanting to help his Aunt May. The woman who raised him. I always hated how they treated him for only wanting to help his family.
that's also how he was treated in the comics. in the amazing spider-man comics right before peter went to university aunt may got in the hospital. because he wanted to rush to the hospital he abandonned a fight (with green goblin i think) all the papers called him a coward en when university started he was so worried over aunt may that he did not interact with his classmates causing everyone to think he was an arrogant douchebag because he got in with a scholarship because of his intellect.
+alaster boneman watch this EXCLUSIVE: The Spectacular Spider-Man 10 Year Anniversary Party Interviews ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Wxbo46PBpbA.html and listen to them from 7:00 to 7:25 and youll see that your wish come true
>Claims that Green Goblin is the best villain >Goes on later about how Venom was done so masterfully Admit it, Venom was the best villain in the show. Sure, Gobby was great, but Venom just hit so close to home, and the fusion of both mainline and Ultimate (comic) aspects was superb.
I don't doubt that if this show would have been allowed to run it's intended 5 seasons, it would be my number 1 superhero-show of all time, taking the throne from Batman TAS. Now, it is just a very, very, very close second. This is the best adaptation of my favourite superhero, distilling all the great things about the character. Hell, if this had been allowed it's intended five seasons it could have been *the* best superhero-adaptation of all time, at least for me. But... sweet things seldom last long. I'm grateful for what I got. Thanks to all who worked on this show. You have my undying respect.
Before the game from Insomniac, I totally would’ve agreed that Josh Keaton is the best Spider-Man. But Yuri Lowenthal does such a great job in the video game that I gotta give him props.
Actually, this version of Eddie Brock is more based on the Ultimate comic version. You forgot to mention that this series had the best adaptations of the classic iconic stories from the comic.
5:49- 6:08 plus in the episode identity crisis, he defended peter by stating that he was only dressed up as spiderman for halloween and saying that anyone could dress up as spiderman and people would buy it and he proves it.
I sincerely agree with you on the execution of the Venom Saga, and this show's Venom is the only Venom that I actually like. I like the other villains in the show a lot as well, though I admit that I've always felt a bit disappointed that Janice, Tombstone's daughter and one of the people to use the identity of the Beetle in the comics, was created about a year after the show ended. Janice's presence would've separated Tombstone a bit from Kingpin, and would give him a bit more depth as an antagonist as a caring father as well as a master crime-lord. Also, considering the fact that Janice is a DA in the comics, she could've been the perfect way to bring Tombstone back for future seasons. I would love to see yet another of Greg's shows return for a third season on Netflix, but with a new show about Spidey about to air and Greg being committed to the revived Young Justice show now, I sincerely doubt that it will happen for at least the next few years.
Thanks for the review. This show deserved to be continued and concluded as planned. Not only that, but superhero animated series fans deserve more than they're getting nowadays. Hopefully, Sony and Marvel will give it another chance. They made a deal for the movies and yes I now the movies are more profitable, but I don't think it's impossible.
alaster boneman I don't see why. I guess maybe he has problem with Cyclops being 2nd fiddle. The story telling is fantastic. I like the 90's show but it is somewhat overrated.
As a kid it was and still is, hard for me to believe that Otto became a villain in this. As in, I really liked him, he was a nice guy, I was even hoping he would turn good at some point.
If victor cook, and Greg Weismen indeed borrowed villain philosophy right from Batman the animated series, then Eddie Brock/Venom is most definitely the Two-Face of Spectacular Spider-man.:)
Jesus, this video is so fucking underrated. I just discovered your channel, and you deserve way more subs. Love it! Can you also do a review for Justice League and Justice League Unlimited? Thanks so much!
“This show actually keeps peter young and in high school, which is one of the important defining qualities of the character in the comics,” oho boy, am i surprised you and linkara didn’t go to war on this.
Watched 3 episodes recently, and I loved the third episode, the end specifically, showing the struggle of maintaining spiderman AND Peter Parker. While Spiderman won the battle against the Lizard, Peter lost because unlike us, everyone saw him ran away and take pictures of the fight instead of helping. Even though this struggle is probably shown in the comics, I've never read any, and finally seeing it shown on a series, unlike Ultimate (I think) was so amazing.
That's because with Josh Keaton's delivery, he can even make the lamest of Spidey's sound funny just by the way he says them. "I win me. That makes no sense."
To those who want this show back, please sign this petition: www.change.org/p/marvel-and-netflix-please-continue-the-spectacular-spider-man-the-avengers-earth-s-mightiest-heroes-etc
Mark hamill is great choice but I would have Steve Kramer voice hobgoblin Because when I heard him voice darkonda in power rangers in space I thought of the hobgoblin I personally think Steve Kramer sounds like the hobgoblin and would be perfect for the role
I know In the comics it's very different but I was really rooting for Liz and Peter as a couple (because Liz is the most developed character in the series) due to her change. But after they broke up, I either want them to get back together if Peter finds out a way to make her forgive him or reveal that he's Spider-Man. What do you guys, think? This design of Liz is really good too compared to the comics :)
Well E-Rod given that we have a third season of Young Justice coming to Netflix after being cancelled there MIGHT be a chance that if we show the creators how much we want to see the series come back. We could see a return of it via netflix. If the 90s spiderman series can get a proper finale several years later ANYTHING is possible.
Well it KINDA did. It was more a voice recorded thing rather than animated finale.. It was used as rewards for promoting another show called Rocket League I think.
But they can't make a new season of SSM due to legal reasons and Sony's retardation up their asses! Disney had no chose but to make USM and release its first episode on April Fools day of all dates. lol
Nitwit's World But they have a choice now. Yes there is a new show, but if we show Marvel and Disney we still know and support Spectacular, maybe a deal could happen to bring it back.
I grew up with the movies and this show. Seeing Spidey fight alongside Wolverine and Hulk was a new idea to me as a kid. As I got to know Marvel, I found myself preferring Spidey as a street-level hero with Punisher, Daredevil and Luke Cage. I don't see why he should be an Avenger or fight characters like Dr. Doom or Thanos. I didn't like Spider-Man Homecoming because it was absolutely nothing like the Spectacular Spider-Man. I would've preferred a series on Netflix as it wouldn't include the Avengers, it would be more in-depth, and Spidey would fit in better with the Defenders.
@Rayvon Velez I can't believe I'm agreeing with you on that. Both the movies and cartoons made by Disney got the character entirely wrong. The web-head was definitely better off in Sony's hands (and mostly isolated). But for some reason, I can't get over the idea of Spidey being a Disney character. I'll never acknowledge MCU Spidey, but I still hopelessly wish they'll get Spider-Man right someday.
@Rayvon Velez Vulture was a good villain, and thanks for the warning about Far From Home (Mysterio was my only excuse to watch it anyway). But it's highly unlikely that Disney will be selling Spidey back to Sony anytime soon because they're still attracting viewers (mostly ignorant children). You gotta rile up a boycott against Disney's Spidey to make Disney sell Spidey's rights back to Sony (not Marvel in general though).
@Rayvon Velez Believe me, I don't want the web-head or any of his supporting characters anywhere near the Avengers or the Fantastic Four. I want Spider-Man only to coexist with a select few other superheroes and their respective supporting casts, that's basically why I don't read comics. I still like the Vulture as a character because his motives are understandable and his methods are street-level. I'll take your word on Mysterio though, so I won't watch Far From Home.
This was a much better review than the previous one (which I admittedly was a fan of) and this is bar and none one of my favorite honest reviews you've done
Also The Venom Saga in the Comics I do agree does kinda pale in comparison to the show. But I personally think it's gotten more engaging over the years (not better than in this show but still)
Great review, Erod! I really enjoyed the show when I saw it on TV. It seemed like a very fun and exciting show. It's a shame that it got cancelled like it did, as I also would have been interested in seeing what the next few seasons would have explored. Keep up the great videos :)
I remember this series very fondly. This series did a great job showing spider man for what he should be, the empowered underdog. The guy who never stops swinging (no pun intended) now matter what life throws at him.
TO be honest with you, they really is a combination of both the classic spider man comics and the ultimate spider man comics. Even introducing the character Kenny from the ultimate comics.
Amazing review! I'm a bit sad you didn't go into more detail about the actual symbiote since I would have loved to hear your thoughts about it, but still a great review nonetheless! Thanks for doing this remake ^.^
Spiderman animated series was so good but this was better sadly carnage could not come in i mean he was op in sas so i would have loved to see them doing a version😢
I know I'm going to get a lot of shit for this, but I'm gonna say it anyway: with just a few minor changes, I think Ultimate SpiderMan would have been pretty good. Maybe not on par with this show, but it could have been a cute, genuinely funny teenage sitcom instead of an annoying cringe fest. What kinds of changes? Well, getting rid of those bizarre 4th wall breaks that ground everything to a screeching halt is a big "No duh!" But one change that I think would have not only provided a lot of good story opportunities, but also a lot of genuine comedy is: telling Aunt May the truth! Seriously, in every incarnation, it's ridiculous why she's kept out of the loop, but it's especially especially stupid in that show. Aunt May could have been a great grounding force for these wayward teenagers. Hell, she could have been employed by SHIELD as a den mother for the teenage superheroes, fussing over them, listening to their fears and concerns, and giving advice for both their personal lives and superhero lives. Hell, she likely would have put the Avengers in their place. Another minor change would be instead of focusing on selling merchandise, kissing Spidey's ass, or introducing more characters only to to absolutely nothing with them, they could have focused more on the personal aspects of the team. Made them a bit more sympathetic, 3-dimensional, and, most importantly, competent. The show was basically the Marvel version of Young Justice and I get why they wanted to set themselves apart, but it really really did not work, and that's just sad.
Bethany McMurtrey I definitely think it could have it could have been a good spider man show like the 90s one just a simply fun show that you can watch occasionally and like it like batman the animated series or the previously mentioned 90s Spiderman but nope marvel just wanted to advertise their movies and other superheroes by giving Spiderman a team having him work with shield and having 80 percent of the episodes have Spiderman fight villains like nightmare and dormamu instead of someone like rihno and Disney wanted to pander to kids it's a shame because the episodes which don't focus on spidey's team as much and have him fight his own villains are actually really good and sometimes great like the rihno episode his origin in it kinda sucks but it's one of the shows best as well as the episode featuring electro if the show just did what spectacular did having new villains show up because of some kind of accident or personal vendetta like how electro and vulture show up in spectacular it could have been good not at all close to this but probably as good as the early episodes of the 90s show or maybe better since the animation quality has improved so the action may be better and I doubt that it would have the plain awful dialogue the 90s show did so yeah ultimate spider man certainly could have been good but sadly it wasn't
I love this show to bits. Definitely one of the best renditions of Spider-Man. But my favourite is stil the 90's Spider-Man show. I think the big difference between the 2 shows is that 'Spectacular' is based on early Spider-Man years. I love and own the early 1960's books with high school Peter Parker. But I'm a 90's kid. I grew up reading the majority of my Spidey comics when he was already in his 20's and a full grown Spider-MAN. They used alot of the 90's story lines and the inclusion of Carnage in the 90's show was awesome. I also prefered the animation. But comparing the two is sort of pointless as they both represent different eras of Spider-Man's story. Both of these show will always be the best representations of the comic book Spidey brought to screen. I will also include Spider-Man Homecoming as being a great comic to screen representation.
It's Norman Osborn. Norman Osborn is the Green Goblin. That's hardly even a spoiler it's common sense by this point. Either him or Harry but in this case it's Norman.
Could you do a "real" review on the 90's Spiderman. By that I mean talk about all the problems with the series, no guns, no fighting, no saying kill or death, no mention of blood (even with vampires), and mixing up characters origins (Black Cat being a Super Soldier, Hobgoblin appearing before Green Goblin, Madam Web being a god like being, and Electro being the son of Red Skull).
I really love Spectacular Spider-Man, I still miss it too. I do have the complete series blu-ray but we should have gotten a season 3. Disney ruined it and gave us the garbage that is Ultimate Spider-Man.
