The Soviets tried to cover up Chernobyl until radiation alarms went off at a Swedish nuclear power plant. The Swedes panicked, thinking they had a leak, and couldn’t find anything. Then they asked the US to investigate and Reagan re-tasked a spy satellite to start looking. It didn’t take long to find a smoking hole. After that, the Soviets had no choice but to come clean.
@beachbum77979
@beachbum77979 Год назад
@@jeffshafer9079 Well, maybe ruZZia thought they came clean. But early in this WAR I wondered how stupid they are. Digging trenches in the most contaminated soil and trying to use Chernobyl as a headquarter or base or something else stupid. I don't think ruZZia has come clean about Chernobyl quite yet. Not even with their own people, or their horde of orcs.

@@beachbum77979 Ukraine runs it now, and it’s done correctly and safely. The new containment structure will last 100 years. Radio too. I was a shortwave radio buff back in the 60s. I listened to Radio Moscow a lot. In August 1968 Russia, known as the Soviet Union at the time, invaded Czechoslovakia under the guise of the Warsaw Pact and crushed the Prague Spring. The Czech government under Dubcek had been initiating reforms such as more public debate of government policies and the possibility of having opposing political parties. They were not working to overthrow the Marxist-Leninist State or foment any kind of anti-Soviet revolution. They simply wanted to liberalize public discourse, "socialism with a human face" as Dubcek called it. The Russians of course could not tolerate any of this knowing free and open political discussion was a grave danger to its Eastern Bloc empire. Russia basically got away with this invasion. After routine words of condemnation, very little was done by the international community in response. Visions of detente were dancing in the heads of NATO. What the world ended up with was the Brezhnev Doctrine wherein Moscow claimed the right to intervene in any country where a communist government was threatened. The news about Czechoslovakia quickly dissolved from Western interest. You might think Russia would have wanted the story to go away too. Not so. Radio Moscow had a story just about every day for a least two years. Two years! The Warsaw Pact forces were "requested" by members of the Czech government and Communist Party leaders. Socialism was threatened. The West was interfering in the Eastern Bloc. The Czech citizens were endangered by "anti-socialist" forces and "bourgeois" systems. The Czech people were grateful for the invasion. I don't know how effective this propaganda was on Radio Moscow listeners. What is clear is that Russia depends on a delusional state of mind that soothes themselves even if not convincing others.

When I was in Russia in the 1970s, there were queues everywhere. Apparently it did not matter what the queue was for. Russians would just join on the end because it must be something in short supply. There was nothing to buy in the shops with roubles. There were special shops where you could buy stuff but they would take foreign currency only. Before I left, I found I had a lot of roubles which I was not allowed to take out of the country, so I bought a bust of Karl Marx (there were plenty of those). When I got back to London I used it as a door stop.

Oh yeah - one day the KGB paid her family a visit in 1975 when her uncle had jumped off and escaped to Canada :) About the episode - no doubt that Ruzzian propaganda more and more resembles the former Soviet propaganda. Back in the early-mid 2000s I had started working through the Pimsleur Russian courses, and then found some places on the internet to watch Russian TV news. I understood even less of the language than I understand now, but still I noticed that Russian TV news was obsessed with 1) Ukraine and its parliament, and 2) the United States. It paid a lot more attention to the U.S. than we paid to Russia, but Ukraine seemed to be the top obsession. That seemed to me ominous, and I said so at the time. I didn't know much about the history of Ukraine at the time, other than that the Holodomor had happened, but it didn't seem healthy that a smaller country would have a large neighbor with such a history paying so much attention to it. It turns out it wasn't healthy at all.

There is only one thing of which there's a shortage. Red ink."

Thanks Anna. All but the very deluded know how bad life was in the 'Soviet Union.' Now thar Russia has decided to turn back the clock, millions of people in Russia will suffer again. This is their own fault, and I have no sympathy. Ukraine, on the other hand, has a bright future. Glory to Ukraine 🇺🇦

Beautiful Anna, Unfortunately, in the US we are having on own issues with media propaganda, and it is becoming more and more difficult to decern the truth of anything. Your analysis should be viewed by all to understand the dangers of suppressing truth (no matter how painful the truth is) in order to have a free and open society. I, for one, applaud your work and hope you continue! Please stay safe, warm, and healthy....... Slave Ukraine! you are truly one of the heroes!

I say, "Truth is always the first victim of political correctness". The idea of deliberately lying to yourself and others, while suppressing and attacking the truth, in the hope that somehow reality will mutate into a form more pleasing to you, is the essence of what is called Political Correctness. It's a Western Form of deliberately engaging in self inflicted propaganda.

There were also programs, which were supposed to "hold up a crooked mirror" (nastaviť krivé zrkadlo) - which was a very empty phrase used to describe programs that were supposed to uncover some problems in society, which they did, but in a very tame and careful way

It seems that the current Russian society has a dire lack of mirrors, crooked or ordinary. Yet again, compared to the Soviet times, current Russia seems like a step backwards.

That sneaky smile of your at the end 👌🏻😁 Good episode. I thought on last year that how my buddys mother does not still speak Finnish fluently even my buddy did it already 20y ago and they moved here like on -90/-91 or so. But it must because of watching the Russian tv, not a Finnish one. That's why also the whole family is poisoned with this Russian propaganda. Oh, the amount of denialism with it. Btw in 🇫🇮 language that "sneaky smile" is called for virne, but I also wanna add that beautiful is called for kaunis. Just telling... 😇 Slava Ukraini!

Thank you, Anna and Sasha, I like this episode (I like them all but I feel strongly about matters of morals and principles; in life). This manipulation they've been doing for decades over there is *extremely* harmful to their own population. They pretend they care about their citizens, but if they fail to be open and honest with them, they lead them into a false sense of security, which is likely why they are, in the main, totally unprepared for the realities they are starting to find out about now. It (the truth) is a shock that hits like a ton of bricks! Unrest is gradually bubbling away on simmer; just waiting to come to the boil (metaphorically speaking). So that just proves they lie and are creating a society of liars (even if by scaring them into becoming liars). We often hear that saying here 'The truth hurts'. Yes, it can hurt, it hurts the guilty party (or parties) a lot when it comes to light that they lied. Karma happens unaided. That's why decent parents do their best to teach their children to be open and honest in life. Scale that up to liars doing their utmost to teach others to be dishonest... ...then imagine the majority of society being taught by "parents" (leaders throughout society) who have the principles of the latter of those two. Would that be likely to result in a society that can cope when lying backfires on them *big time* ? Wishing you peaceful skies 💙🕊💛

I've also known for almost a decade. Didn't know how, where, or why, but I knew something was coming. Hopefully we (the US) never need to fight Iran. If they're paying attention to this war, it should highlight their own weaknesses and inability to conduct full-scale war against a Western power, and they will be dissuaded. If they're watching their supposedly stronger "friend" Russia fail this badly, they'll have to re-evaluate their place in the world and where they want to go from here. Personally, I don't think many Americans or Iranians really want to go to war with each other. I hope I'm right! 🇺🇦🇬🇧🇨🇵🇮🇷🇺🇸
