When I was a kid, I honestly thought that when you saw flashbacks of a character, they had actually filmed the actor as a child. Made me think that movies took decades to make.

Oh, I never said that. I remember I used to think a lot of dumb shit.I used to think the sun followed our car when we drove places. I once tried to convince a girl in elementary that I was a power ranger in hopes that she would think I was cool. Shit is cringe worthy to even admit. Some kids are just fucking dumb. Nothing wrong with that.

I think the reason people like this movie is because it shows how not everyone's life is a spectacular journey but everyone does have a story even if it's not amazing. I'd take this over a John Green story any day.
@star88wars

Grace Jenkins Really, because I would say that this movie and John Green's books are pretty much they same. They both pretty much boil down to "imagine people complexly" and "everyone has a story" and stuff like that. I wouldn't say that any of John Green's characters have spectacular journeys either. Most of his characters sit around thinking and pontificating and not doing much, just like the characters in this movie.

+Grace Jenkins John Green is actualy an overrated Author. And boyhood is by that also very overrated by critics. Terrible film.
@1aundulxaldin
@1aundulxaldin 8 лет назад
+Grace Jenkins Even the most mundane lives have their bit of excitement and drama. It hurts us and grows up with us, usually following us from childhood all the way to adulthood, where we have to awkwardly face it, and potentially risk humiliation, vulnerability, mental scarring, and above all else, Victory that will still feel more like Defeat. Which leaves me with the impression this film will make a lot more sense if you look at from the perspective of Charlie Brown or something like.

Your enjoyment of this film really depends on how much you can relate to the family being depicted. If you grew up in a stable, two-parent household, and didn't have to experience a lot of the events that happen to Mason in the film, then this film is going to be boring. But to me, this film was fantastic and the fact that it was shot over a period of twelve years with the same actors really allowed me to insert myself and experience it. I experienced a lot of the things the boy in the film did, and I really empathized and related to most of the characters, especially the mother. It really gave me perspective on how fleeting, but essential the growing years are. It gave me perspective on my childhood and where I am now as a nineteen year-old male. It gave me perspective on what I've been doing with my life over the past twelve years. It's not a film for everyone, but if you grew up in similar conditions and circumstances, then this film will really capture those moments and years.
@goneyon
@goneyon 9 лет назад
SPOILERS IN THE PARAGRAPH BELOW, IF THAT SORT OF THING BOTHERS YOU. I thought it was boring mostly BECAUSE the story was accurate in terms of portraying the life of a kid with an unstable life. No character was particularly interesting; everyone was essentially just relatively successful with finances and romance, as well as occasionally somewhat off in their judgment of what should be done about certain things. Those might be realistic portrayals of everyday people, but they aren't interesting characters. That's not even mentioning the fact that there are so many segways from scene to scene, many of which involve introducing problems out of nowhere and then letting them go without a solution, or introducing characters out of nowhere only to immediately let them go. Example: the main character's best friend is introduced with practically no defining traits and then let go immediately without even a decent goodbye, all in the first ten minutes or so. Another example: when the mom takes away her kids from the abusive guy, but leaves the kids that aren't her own because they aren't hers, there's a scene after that where they talk about whether or not it was wrong to leave them behind, but the problem is never resolved! No one comes up with any solutions - no one even really tries! The problem is just sort of let go. Another example: the main character and his girlfriend kiss atop a roof, then they're in bed together, but two scenes later they're arguing about prom and they subsequently break up - that had absolutely no build up at all! Another example: the mom suddenly tears up at the prospect of her son leaving for college (which isn't really even built up or anything) and then immediately let go in favour of the son driving through the desert, listening to the radio. No attempts at even comfort. That's not realistic; that's arguably sadistic of him, which he is not. At the beginning of this movie, I thought the unsatisfying segways between scenes and problems was to illustrate how chaotic a child's mind is, which would be a really clever metaphorical addition to the movie. However, the segways continue even when he's a teenager and beyond, which makes it just lazy or intentional screenwriting (the former of which would be annoying and the latter of which would be disappointing). The other important thing to mention is that outside of accurately portraying the life of a child like this in real life, I found nothing done particularly well in this movie. Nothing noteworthy. The cinematography was decent, the music was more or less bland and pandering to the kind of inner child they think you have, the characters were boring, the segways were unimaginably illogical and annoying, and...well, there was really nothing else. This is supposed to be a story, is it not? And with a main character that is apparently (huge emphasis on 'apparently', because there seems to be nothing to suggest he's that way except the movie - no scenes of him thinking, no ideas that indicate he's anything but slightly philosophical, etc.) as introspective as Mason, metaphor and allegory really should have at least existed, let alone played a bigger role. But, no; we just get a lot of quiet moping as well as a quick diverting of focus away from any side character who comes even close to being interesting by having the movie basically write them off as "weird" and pan back to our boring and practically lifeless main character (e.g. the introduction of the college roommate and his girlfriend near the end, who both yell philosophical whimsy across the canyon and are subsequently panned away from to make room for Mason and the next lifeless being he's interested in dating). I think something like "Where The Wild Things Are" does a better job of portraying a child's journey into maturity because it uses metaphor and analogies to illustrate how chaotic a child can be and how chaotic life itself can be. All this movie does is show us a life being lived, which not only doesn't make for interesting cinema but also makes the entire thing nothing but a truism: essentially, a long-winded illustration of something obviously true and saying nothing new or interesting. Like the final idea of "it's always 'right now'" - you honestly might as well say, "Up is the opposite of down" and convey exactly the same level of original, complex thinking.

Yonatan Gershon You have a fair point. You're right in some respects. It's not a movie for everyone. I, personally, would have loved to have some focus dedicated to Mason's sister (whose name escapes me). We see her reactions to things, but it would have been nice to see more of her perspective and experiences on the events that transpire in the movie. I agree. The film does set up several subplots and questions that are never answered, like the issue with the step-siblings. I'm not saying that they should've returned, but a throwaway line detailing how they are, or what ever happened to them would have been nice. At least give closure. I think Mason became somewhat boring to watch as he got older because he just had this apathetic "whatever" personality that is simply not compelling to watch. I think the last third of the film would have benefited by focusing more on the sister. By that point, she was leading a more interesting life than Mason. But overall, I enjoyed watching this movie. I understand how some people could find it boring, but I- and many others- didn't because we could see ourselves in their situations. I've experienced many of the things that happened to Mason, so thus I can relate to him, as well as the rest of the film, more. My mother did marry an alcoholic asshole, and became very submissive in the years following the marriage. That scene where Mason comes home to find his battered and distraught mother sobbing uncontrollably on the ground in the garage while the stepfather looms over her; that scene was rather difficult for me to watch because I witnessed my mother in a similar predicament once. I don't mean to over-share, but I'm just trying to explain how vivid the film captured a lot of moments in my childhood. I don't think the film was trying to tell a cohesive narrative. That's why there really isn't much closure. It was just showing a life. Your enjoyment of a movie like that depends on how well you can relate to the life being presented, and how interesting you find that life. Like I said, it's not for everybody and I completely understand your problems with it.
@goneyon
@goneyon 9 лет назад
***** Well, first off, thanks for replying and taking the time to explain yourself further. I did understand your comment originally, but having more detail like this only helps. However, I'd like to point out that what you're describing sounds like it would do better as a documentary of the average Texan child's life - if not Texan, then a word better describing those sorts of childhood and adolescent predicaments. This movie did extremely well in terms of showing the events of a dysfunctional childhood. I will give it that. Since it is actually a narrative, though, I didn't judge it on that. I suppose this movie could technically work as a fictional documentary, and in that respect perhaps it did at least decently. However, the director could have done a fictional documentary over the course of a few months rather than twelve years - it isn't that difficult to find older look-alikes, after all, and the audience could suspend disbelief if the older actor did well. As well, the director could have covered the lives of multiple children rather than just one to introduce a greater number of perspectives. Within the movie that was actually made, for instance, he could have shown much more about the sister's life. I found myself immensely confused at her character; she was academically brilliant in the first half hour or so, but spends the rest of the movie being essentially a stereotypical teenage airhead. I guess that's just personal preference, though. I still think this movie is awful, but only because I judge it as a narrative - which, I think, was what the director was trying to make. As a fictional documentary, however, I think it does just fine.
@jimedwards5087
@jimedwards5087 9 лет назад
I have to respectfully disagree with you. I could greatly relate to a lot of the things that happened to the family. It was really a matter of how the story was told that made it quite boring. I love dramas and I can sit through a three hour film as long as the story is there and solid and Boyhood just didn't seem to have one solid story. The director was going for a series of short-stories and none of them really carried on to the next one very well. Life isn't a series of loosely connected short stories, it is one grand story divided up into to chapters and parts perhaps. Just my opinion on the it.

Remember in 2009, there was a movie called Avatar directed by James Cameron. At first, everyone called it a modern-day masterpiece, because it had beautiful cgi and started the 3-D gimmick that lasted a few years. Now, no one gives a shit about that movie. Do you want to know why? Because the plot sucked, the acting was wooden, and the dialogue wasn't well thought out. This movie suffers from the same thing. Everyone is calling it a modern masterpeice not because of the characters or the dialogue of the plot (if there even is a plot), but simply because it's filmed over twelve years (which I'll admit is very ambitious) and that somehow makes it a superior film over Birdman, Whiplash, Nightcrawler, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Gone Girl, and other movies that actually have something to offer beyond a gimmick. Mark my words, in a few years no one will give a shit about this movie the same way no one cares about Dances with Smurfs (Avatar)
@AnthonyChats
@AnthonyChats 9 лет назад
The fact that Nightcrawler got essentially no love pisses me off. I also think it's offensive to other filmmakers and the craft itself to elevate this film above what it is: a bold and ambitious experiment with mixed results. Everyone says "12 years...this was such a major commitment." They took a couple of weeks once a year to shoot a couple of scenes. It's really not a big deal. This is no landmark cinematic achievement. Documentarians must be pissed that Linklater is getting so much love over this minor achievement when they spend much more actual time slaving over their films.
@erik91895
@erik91895 9 лет назад
No dude, no one was actually calling it a modern masterpiece, they were just saying it was a great spectacle, which it was. This movie's reviews are much better, and yes, you might think that only critics like it, but that is not the case. A bunch of non critics like it, and this one will be remembered for a long time. Sorry bud, if you don't like it, you're gonna have to deal with it.
@stevesteve160
@stevesteve160 9 лет назад
Avatar did not receive universal praise. The consensus was that the effects were great and that it was entertaining, but not that it was a masterpiece. The movie has an 83 on Metacritic. If you read the reviews from when it was released, there were many who criticized the dialogue, acting and overall story as being mediocre. Very few critics said it was anything more than a solid science fiction/fantasy movie with great visuals. Boyhood is not being universally praised just because it took 12 years to make. That's ridiculous. Critics are calling it a masterpiece specifically because of the realism of the acting and dialogue, and for showing how small moments help to form someone's personality and influence their life. You don't get a Metacritic score of 100 and universal praise from other filmmakers and international critics just by thinking of a creative idea for a movie.

There's a huge difference between a Transformers movie that has no plot because it spends its entire time pandering to studio demographics and filling the screen with hideous CGI, and a movie that intentionally strays away from a plot for a specific artistic purpose. Lost in Translation, Barcelona, American Graffiti, and Dazed & Confused all have little to no plot, and they are all spectacular movies. Your childhood does not have a structured plot. The movie moves through his life and captures dozens of small moments along the way. It's supposed to be a movie about life, and I think it captured it perfectly.

Boyhood is a great movie but is the type of movie you watch once. I think the fact that it doesnt have much of a plot works great for the movie because the movie tries to portray what life is, and it certainly isnt like the movies, in most cases its just boring. I think it portrayed very well what its like to grow up, your relationship with your parents, going through high school, etc. The nostalgia factor was also key, me being a similar age to mason, as he grew i also remembered all the things he did: the video games, music, toys, etc, that part was very beautiful. Overall i think it was a great experience watching it but i wouldnt want to watch it again (at least not in a while). The way i see it i would rather watch whiplash again but i think in 15 years i will remember boyhood more than whiplash. i would also add that the kid got really anoying as a teenager, like he couldnt even sit through a meal without questioning life

The Up series has taken 50 years to make... Again no I just don't like when people use this excuse to pretty much deflect any valid criticism of the film, not saying your doing it here, but I have often seen people use that as their entire defense of Boyhood and it can get ratherirritating. I do think the film is far from perfect, it does have some geniune flaws especially in the final hour, it's still overall a very strong movie and saying it's not entirely perfect and shouldn't be put up on a pedastal free from criticism is okay too.

It's a meme from Red Letter Media, who outright hated the film and thought the only reason it got any buzz at all was its development time. Which led to them making a video about how Boyhood would clearly win every single award not just that year, but with every film in the previous twelve years having their awards revoked and given to Boyhood, with the sole explanation being "IT TOOK TWELVE YEARS TO MAKE."

I enjoyed the movie. It didn't really have an overly scripted plot, it was just about the average life of a boy in a dysfunctional family. Something many people can relate to. Something has to be said about a movie that took 12 years to do with all the same actors. It's not like they were on-call on a daily basis and couldn't do other work. There were literally years where they weren't needed at all. It won't blow you away, but it's a movie everyone should be able to appreciate and enjoy, even if you only watch it once.
@derricks2594
@derricks2594 9 лет назад
No it was about a boy and how so many subtle moments that determined who he became and how he viewed the world. And to me it was simply genius. I thought the elf question was just another example of just a moment that passes, but changes your perception of the world. I remember when I was a child and asked seemingly "dumb" questions. This movie really resonated with me, and I think it's an incredible film.

Well, it's kind of a cliffhanger but it's pretty obvious where it'll lead. I think it's implied pretty heavily that they'll end up together. What they really left open is that final scene with his mum. She's crying, feeling horrible and that's how it ends for her. But I loved the movie a lot, doesn't matter that there's not much plot, it just feels realistic, which makes you relate to the characters very well.

Adam Abuelheiga This thread flew straight above yours and a couple of others heads. My point was that this film's concept is the main selling point, not the movie itself. Just check out the trailer, it sells the concept, not the movie. I watched a feuturette, all they talked about was the shooting process. Like I said, I loved the movie. But it will win Best Picture for all the wrong reasons. "Zomg it took 12 years u has to vote for it." It's like 12 years a slave, media forced people to vote for it because this was, and I quote, "The one chance the academy has to prove they're not racists."

The movie is like an absract painting. You get from it what you bring to it. It's a self-reflection of life in general. The happy moments, sad, bad decisions and lose. Life are moments and it is fleeting and eventhough you want to stop time to enjoy moments together, you really can't. I've been touched by this movie differently because it makes me think about my life and how quickly it'll pass by without noticing, people, places and events.

your friends are obviously not thinking very hard. it's one character who makes some bad decisions. i don't know any person older than high school age who would consider the character any kind of role model, but she's not supposed to be. she's a real-world representation of a normal, flawed human being. please don't walk around thinking people who call themselves feminists are stupid just because your friends are too stupid to understand what this character represents. thanks.

If this film wins best picture I will go crazy with frustration. This honest trailer is so incredibly accurate. There is no denying that this film is an incredibly intriguing idea, a really impressive feat of filmmaking, - or just a refusal to give up on a project because you invested so much into it - however anyone who thinks that this is a great movie based on simply the merits of its plot and ideas has been utterly suckered because of its nostalgic pop culture references to the last decade. A documentary could do and some do exactly what this is. You know what else could be this movie? If they cut up a bunch of scenes from Gilmore Girls and made it into a two hour movie about the mom and her daughter and how they grew up. Its the exact same thing. This movie is basically the synopsis of what any procedural show could have done if it lasted 10+ seasons. And the kicker is that a procedural television show would have been so much better because that truly takes work. It takes so much more to dive intricately into a group of peoples' lives' and chronicle them week in and week out, and still keep you interested as well as invested in their lives that often for that amount of time. Rather than just make a two hour movie that you shot for a really long time. Its cool but its still just a two hour-ish movie. If this movie deserves an oscar then somehow Friends deserves an oscar, and How I met Your Mother deserves an oscar, or even 7th heaven deserves an oscar (really poor timing to say this I know but you get what I mean.) Because those honestly took even more work than what this film did, and you know what they are? TV SHOWS.

EDIT: I do really like this movie. I just don't think that it deserves best picture. IT IS A GOOD MOVIE THERE IS NO DENYING THAT. AND IT IS AN INFLUENTIAL PIECE OF CINEMA. There were better movies this year though. Much better.

"incredibly intriguing idea" -> not really there have been a couple of documentaries that did a similar thing, but the stories were actually real rather than cheap drama. Plus Coronation Street (British soap-opera) has numerous characters played by the same actors over many decades (the longest serving character currently on the show has been a continuous feature for 52 years!). But I don't see anyone hailing them as creative genius.

Look Boyhood is clearly not for everyone but to call it a gimmick is simply cynical. Linklater didn't just want to create a realistic coming of age story, he wanted to capture it on camera. Linklater has already made Dazed and Confused (one of the best films of 90s), Waking Life (one of the best films of the 2000s) and Before Trilogy (one of the greatest love stories of all time), so he's clearly a director with a unique vision. Boyhood is his most personal film to date. All the characters in Boyhood mature through the course of the film and they learn to embrace the darkness and imperfections of life. If you're constantly looking for ways to improve your future, you'll miss out on living. Ultimately Boyhood's message is that Life doesn't have to be perfect, it just needs to be lived.
@FranQuijas
@FranQuijas 9 лет назад
Richard Linklater is great! He is one of my favorite directors, The Before Trilogy had one of the best screenplays i have seen in years and most of his characters feel so natural and interesting. But Boyhood was a mediocre major disappointment. I am okay with movies that doesn't put a concrete story to itself, but this movie had a really really mediocre execution that a lot of people and critics ignore just because the time it took. A lot of things that were put on the film felt so unatural and aumaterish that i felt like i wasn't watching a Linklater film and just a filmschool student. Most of the actors were complete shit and they didn't give a fuck to put effort in to it, the only ones that had a character with personality was the Mom and the Dad. The plot devices were extremely dull, without subtlety and forced, the cinematography was uninteresting, and they tried to use useless things and aspects to reincorporate them in the most underdevelop and pathetic way. As someone that loves Linklater's work, i am whiling to say that this movie is just bad as much as i wanted to like.

@MrAkashvj96 9 лет назад
LegoMation26 Fair enough you're entitled to your opinion and I do agree that the film is far from perfect and it's not Linklater's best by any means but I thought it was brilliant and poignant. Linklater's films have never been about the plot, they're about characters. Most of his films don't even have a plot.
@FranQuijas
@FranQuijas 9 лет назад
Yeah, most of his films are about the script, subtlety, and characters, Before Sunset is my favorite of his, but in my opinion Boyhood is his worst movie. Boyhood's script always had the same flow of feeling improvisational that Linklater never fails on, but for me there weren't characters, just awful actors reading their lines, and the "subtleties" were pretentious and poorly written. Maybe If it was directed by someone else, i could enjoy it a little more or maybe understand its flaws; but at the time i got out of the cinema, i was just screaming in my head -Linklater! You fail on me, how could you make a lot of amateur mistakes? Are you on film school... I was surprised that i didn't like his most acclaimed film, so i saw it another time and i dislike it even more and noticed even more flaws. I really wanted to like it, but shit, i just couldn't ignore all these aumaterish flaws.
@FranQuijas

I didn't like this movie. All the characters were bland and boring (not to mention terribly performed) other than Ethan Hawkes' character. The "dialouge" between the children was laughably bad. The main character was uninteresting and a douchey hipster (probably based off of Richard Linklater). The story was un-engaging (literally nothing happens) not to mention horribly paced. And Finally, it's unnecessarily preachy and hamfisted in it's symbolism and messaging. All in all, it's a 'C' of a film. It's not shit, but hardly a masterpiece, and definitely not a proper Oscar contender (although the Oscars are a joke anyway.)
@someonesreviews
@someonesreviews 9 лет назад
snipaxthebulldog You think Patricia Arquette's performance was terrible? You're just saying things, but you aren't actually making any arguments. You're offering me opinions, but you aren't making any attempt to support the things that you're saying. For example, you said that the dialogue is "laughably bad," but you never actually referenced any specific lines. You just gave me an empty opinion, that's it. All of your opinions are empty, though. You just kept telling me how things are and not even bothering to explain your reasoning. So, basically, you're full of shit.

I'm not writing a review here, nor am I debating you. I'm simply stating my opinion. Fine, I'll concieve that Patricia Arquette's perfomance was good, but that hardly changes my standing on the film. I don't like this film, and I gave you reasons for why I don't (reasons I might add that you haven't been able to successfully rebut). Stop pretending to act that I'm full of shit when you can't even make a coherent argument past, "your opinions are empty."
