Which song would you most want to hear Joe Starr croon in his dulcet baritone voice? POOL RULES One: Speak up and join the conversation- we encourage respectful debate. Two: Respect your community- racism, misogyny, homophobia and hate speech aren’t tolerated. Three: Don’t go looking for fights. Four: “Be nice.” - Dalton from Roadhouse

Maybe they will, but that's not my point. Point being, Tarantino is almost done. He has set an ending and it's only two movies away. Burton could make two more movies or twenty. He hasn't set an end that we know of.

Burton actually made a full treatment for a Nightmare Before Christmas while he was still working at Disney. They didn't even like the idea when he brought them the concept and treatment. It wasn't until he became successful as a director that they realized what they had. By that point he wasn't able to direct it due to previous obligations between Batman Returns and Ed Wood. He went in-depth in a few interviews, one of two, from the mid 90's, and a couple when he was making Big Fish.

love him or hate him, you gotta respect tim burton for just pouring himself into his movies. theres a lot of talented directors, directors who can separate themselves and make great movies, but tim burton throws all of his feelings into it, and shows you exactly who he is and what he's going through with every film. some of them are weird and creepy, you might even say most of them are weird and creepy, but so is burton, and he doesnt care if you know it.

I loved this trailer and this commentary so much. Burton is honestly one of my favourite directors working today even though his movies are a lot more hit and miss than they were in the 80s/90s. As an autistic guy I also can’t help but think he is himself on the spectrum, Edward Scissorhands is the perfect allegory of what it’s like to grow up autistic in a society that feels alienated by you (I wrote my Master’s dissertation on this 😂), and those interviews Dan talked about reveal details about his upbringing that share parallels with a lot of autistic people (including me). He’s probably one of the only proper auteur filmmakers working within the studio system and we should be grateful for that. As much as Planet of the Apes or Alice in Wonderland suck, Burton at his best (Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Sweeney Todd etc.) will always trump any of his failures. Keep giving him money, Hollywood, that’s what I say.

Casey Miller That may be true, but I was really just pointing out that the mayor, while a two-faced coward, is not the villain of the film as was stated in this conversation. I think Oogie isn’t as fleshed out as he could have been as a villain, but I think he’s still kind of fun.

Listening to the arguments about Burton's common story elements, the villain segment jumped out at me. As someone who finds psychology fascinating, I wonder who in his life cemented this specific profile for him. A particularly mean teacher maybe? Anyway, a small note, Lon said the Mayor was the villain in Nightmare, but it is in fact Boogie Woogie. Still completely fits the type, and in fact its actually more apt, considering how loud and brazen Boogie is.

My favourite movie of his is probably Sleepy Hollow. I think it’s the best use of his visual style at its most hard-edged. I think Johnny Depp is great as Crane, i like the whole creepy small town setting, the action is really good, the horse riding scenes are some of the best ever shot (the speed of Horseman!), the effects are great... the Headless Horseman is legitimately scary, especially when he has Christopher Walken for a head. Lots of great actors in the movie. I think it’s a great take on the classic tale. The mystery and Crane’s investigation unfolds really well. It’s an under-rated movie, IMO, and probably my favourite Halloween movie.

I really like Lon's point about how Burton probably just wants to work and getting any kind of budget means taking on a less-than awesome project. It reminds me of a key line in Bull Durham, where Susan Sarandon talks about the romance and beauty and mysticism in baseball, but it's also a job. Well, filmmaking is also a job. Sometimes it isn't about the art. Sometimes it's just about the process and that isn't always inspiring. Also, fully agreed that Big Fish is very moving, especially the ending. Big Fish is definitely my favorite Tim Burton film, and probably just one of my favorite overall films. I think it has so far really marked the apex of Burton's career as I feel it's been pretty downhill from there. The Corpse Bride was fine, Sweeney Todd was fine. But just about everything else hasn't been great. I can understand the argument that studios only wanting to give him the money to make movies based on existing properties is part of it. It's just like studios capitalizing on Burton's style, and it really shows. From what I've heard, Planet of the Apes being the trash pile it was was largely due to bureaucracy as well. They movie we got was not the one they wanted to make.

while I can't buy into Lon's and Joe's appreciation overall for Mars Attack as a whole movie, probably my favorite moment is during the Tom Jones concert, the lights go off and come back on, and every band member has been replaced an alien. What makes it perfect is for the first couple seconds, each of the aliens seem to genuinely be into performing and playing their instruments, then do the frozen still and look around when they're caught.

This may be more of a Cinefix thing, but I'd LOVE a video series of Dan Murrell going through a director's filmography and doing a deep, critical/psychological dive into their patterns, trends, and preferences. That'd be fascinating

I love you all and everything you've ever done. Sweeney Todd is my favorite movie ever so I wish you had spoken more about it but I'm sorry. Wtf Lon. THE MAYOR IS NOT THE VILLIAN OF NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS!!!

They tried to “tease” next weeks not realizing Dan already mentioned it in the beginning.....Spider-Man Into the Spider Verse.

HEY! The Mayor isn't the villain of Nightmare Before Christmas, he's completely loyal to Jack the entire movie. Ooogie Boogie is the bad guy, the Mayor is just a nice guy with bipolar disorder. How DARE you besmirch the Mayor's good name, Lon?!?!?

I have a lot of nostalgia for Mars Attacks, as when I was about 3 years old I kept asking my mom to rent it and thought it was hilarious despite how much it freaked my brother out. Plus that cast...

My guess is the big shift in Tim Burton's career was the Superman Lives production. From his interviews in the documentary on that, it really sounds like that broke him and then his next film, Sleepy Hollow, is the first Burton movie that, despite its impressive qualities, feels like it's on autopilot. He's still got to do some more personal films with his cartoons (Corpse Bride and Frankenweenie) and his attempts at Oscar-bait (Big Fish, Sweeney Todd, Big Eyes) since then, but he's certainly not put the same energy into his big budget films that he did on the Nic Cage Superman.
