Honest XDiavel S Review by a Diavel Owner (after the event, in-car vlog)

I went up to LA for the Ducati XDiavel Xperience Tour event and was pleasantly surprised by what I discovered. So much win on this machine. For those who don't know, Ducati regularly has open test rides for the public. This wasn't a paid or invite-only review. They didn't know I was going to be there. These are just my thoughts as an owner of a first generation Diavel Carbon.

Beautiful bike, but I just don't dig the forward controls. I hope they keep making the standard controls.
@MotoErgoSum
@MotoErgoSum 8 лет назад
+Tactical Priority They verified at the event there will be mid controls. They're just not available yet. If you look at the point between tank and seat, there are plates on either side of the bike that very likely hide additional bolt holes for mid controls, or there will be a whole different plate set for the controls. What I wonder is if you also have to relocate the rear master cylinder. I assume so.

Great honest review. I just bought the 2017 X Diavel S and I agree with you 100%. My other bike is a 2014 ZX14r and let me tell you this bike is special. I've been trying to put it into words but I can't. The torque, the handling, the technology, the bike is amazing! Give it a try, you'll like it!

Warning to all I just spent over $8,000 + on my 15,000 mile Desmo service! I did the Desmo service which was about $2,200 before parts of about $600+, I added new tires , sprockets, chain and battery during the Desmo service, I was around $4,000 with the Desmo service and new parts mentioned but during the 15k mile Desmo servicing they discovered my wiring harness was broken around the steering head, it was routed so it kinked and after being kinked repeatedly the wires inside started breaking down / apart, they tried to patch it but the previous owner already had that done ant it did not really fix the cause, they said it needed a new harness and it was going to be $3,000 in addition to the $4,000 I owed, I have an extended warranty that paid for the harness and they also found the clutch slave cylinder and the neutral gear sensor was bad so it was going to be around $4,000 being paid by the warranty in addition to the $4,000 I paid!! PLUS they kept the bike for 4 months! I brought it in before Xmas, their Ducati expert was in Italy for 2 weeks as he did every year to update his skills and then Xmas hit then the harness issue and getting the work approved by the warranty company all took 4 months and all together $8,000+ with my $4,000 and the warranty company paying $4,000+, If I had not bought the warranty I would have had to pay over $8,000 to tune up my $10,000 Ducati !!! I bought it for $10,400 3 years ago, essentially if it fell over and was damaged that badly it would have been totaled, I was amazed the warranty company paid it all cause I am pretty sure the dealer damaged the gear position sensor doing the clutch slave cylinder job, they paid so all was good , I was freaking out at looking at $4,000 for my servicing until the rest came up , now I am glad it was only $4,000 not $8,000+ the total cost it ended up being! Now when I see all the great deals on low mileage Ducati's I think about the servicing bill being $4,000 to $8,000 and say new with warranty might be best today.

Sorry for the late reply. This got flagged and I didn't see it pop up. Dealers of any brand can be real thieves if you can't diagnose issues yourself. I had the wiring issue at the steering stem. Akron, OH fixed it for cheap and actually got out the soldering iron and heat shrink to do the job right. I would have done it myself but it was already in for service and I was aware of the problem. Only thing that annoyed me about the service bill was how much they charged for spark plugs. Should have ordered those online rather than paying full dealer MSRP. :| Maybe the previous owner of your bike butchered the harness in other ways. CANBUS bikes are notorious for having the various systems act up if they detect any change in voltage. Make sure you check with people on the Diavel Forum before getting anything electrical installed. HID headlight ballasts of various brands have been trouble. Sorry to hear you got a bad deal from the previous owner. Hopefully the dealer set everything straight for you.

+Caleb Whitted Seating and general rider ergonomics. The seat itself is worlds more comfortable because it's dished out where your tail bone is. Pretty much exactly what I wanted from my seat reshaping video, but ran out of foam to shave down and realized I'd need to recover to really get the shape I wanted. The XDiavel is generally more relaxed and comfortable for cruising. The Diavel is a more 'sit up and beg' streetfighter style position. It also looks and feels much larger than the XDiavel, even though it weighs a tad less.

+CLUTCH1st VLOGS Belt. I didn't know what to expect going in, but it's so smooth and quiet I'm sold. Not having to deal with cleaner and lube, keeping the lube off everything, not to mention the tens of thousands of miles we'll be able to go before swapping belts... I wish my Carbon had it.
@MotoErgoSum
@MotoErgoSum 8 лет назад
+CLUTCH1st VLOGS There's going to be a mid control option coming. Not sure how it'll mount, but I assume it'll require removal of the plates on either side of the frame near the swingarm pivot. Probably extra holes under there. The big question is how much will they cost... The DP sets for the Diavel are over a grand.

Looked at the two XDiavel models on offer side by side today. The standard XDiavel looks much more attractive to me in so many ways. From a styling point of view, I have a preference for the colour of the standard model (matte black) and it's black swingarm as opposed to the anodized swingarm on the S model. The difference in price between the two models will leave you with enough extra cash to accessorize from the very expensive parts catalogue... The Termignoni alone is just over 2K here in the UK! Wow!...
@MotoErgoSum
@MotoErgoSum 8 лет назад
+Renato Lopes It won't be a budget purchase by any means, but even in stock trim the bike's fantastic. The main difference between S and base is the 'bling' machining, wheels, gloss tank, silver swingarm, and bluetooth. IMO, the base would look badass with those blackout RSD wheels. 2k's a lot of squid.
@renatojlopes
@renatojlopes 8 лет назад
+MotoErgoSum Yes... You are right, don't forget the M50 callipers. A lot of it is styling/bling, but check out some of the bling you can add here for the difference in price, especially the last 4 items on that page: ducatistore.co.uk/shop/bike-accessories/diavel-x.html
@MotoErgoSum
@MotoErgoSum 8 лет назад
Renato Lopes Unless you want REALLY touchy brakes (what I prefer), the base has fantastic brakes. Just swap out the pads for EBC HH if you want stupid-fast braking power. I put those in my Speed Triple's stock calipers and they had me doing stoppies with ease.

In your opinion, does the xDiavel belt-drive limit the rear wheel travel? Belts need an idler/tensioner if they travel very far (like the Buells used) otherwise they loosen too much for the power put into them.
@MotoErgoSum
@MotoErgoSum 6 лет назад
It seems to have similar driveline geometry to the original Diavel. This means the front sprocket, swingarm pivot, and rear hub are almost in a straight line so any up and down movement in the rear doesn't affect chain or belt tension much. I'm able to adjust my Diavel with the wheel off the ground or on the side stand and it stays where I set the slack after I take it off the Moto Mfg stand. The XDiavel owners on the forums haven't been reporting any notable power losses with the belt. Most people coming from other brands tend to be surprised. Unless you're looking to add a blower for drag racing, it shouldn't matter. When I did the test ride the power felt about the same as my Diavel except much smoother and quieter. I won't be trading until they make it more passenger friendly. My son will be big enough to ride on the back in a few years and I want something with bags that'll store more than a sandwich.

Are you allowed to drive one-handed in the US?
@MotoErgoSum
@MotoErgoSum 8 лет назад
+TheJtkirk Of course. How else would we wave hello to one another with our middle fingers? On a serious note, I've never been pulled over for riding one-handed. You'd have to be riding really sloppily doing stuff that'd get you pulled over even if you were riding two-handed. Same for driving a car. I've done trackdays and so many miles in the canyons at this point that I can even hang off and look around freely around corners one-handed. Handy for cloverleaf freeway interchanges where you NEED to do a near 180 degree head check behind to see if some jackass is about to merge into your lane to exit as you're entering. I've had a few close calls that I've avoided getting hit because I did the head check and rolled on the throttle to GTFO.

I was wondering about the Diavel vs XDiavel too. Interesting you have the Diavel. I basically was asking myself do I want feet forward or back more? Could I have a secondary peg setup for when I wanted forward? The XDiavel S does look really good... does it look that much better in person too? You see the only experience I have with not having my feet under me was on a scooter which is a totally different thing... I didn't like my feet being out in front because I felt like turning in on it was really weird but again it was a scooter. Does this feel really planted and confident when you turn in but still let you flick it around? I like that it seems like you could do anything (cruising sporting and touring) and everything (regular commutes and uses) on an XDiavel and look normal in ATTGAT. Seems like they really refined the Diavel and improved it, is there anything you prefer on the regular?
@MotoErgoSum
@MotoErgoSum 8 лет назад
Forward controls are odd when you first try them, but after a while it gets second nature. Having both mid and forward controls is the best of both worlds for highway riding. If you're doing canyon riding and know how to spin a wrench it shouldn't be too much work to convert from mid to forward. If I end up trading up I'll probably have my controls set up for mid then use the forward mounts for highway pegs like my dad's old 85 Superglide. I could shift that thing with my heel.
@TheVigilantStewards
@TheVigilantStewards 8 лет назад
Cool, I guess I should just do some riding feet forward and see. Although the XDiavel is visually one up over the Monster IMO, I still think the Monster is awesome and is probably a better bike for me on the 821. I would only be interested if the XDiavel was an all around better bike and more comfortable for American roads. It does look fun :)

yeah nice review bro. I agree that having both Diavel and XDiavel would be the perfect pair. God knows why they even used the name "diavel" with the X, apart from the rear tyre they are not simular in anyway.... weird. I keep watching these xDiavel vids, its only a matter of time :)
@MotoErgoSum
@MotoErgoSum 8 лет назад
+minatormyth Powerband is similar. Same crazy acceleration, but it's remarkably smooth and refined on the X. Riding position is different, but the agility is about on par with the X, even though it has a longer wheel base. From my POV, they're creating a family of bikes in the performance cruiser range. The previous Diavel is somewhere between the Streetfighter, Multistrada, and Monster. The X is that blend taken more in the cruiser direction. It's honestly a full-on cruiser with touring compromises for styling. Mostly the tail is too small. Looks great, but I'm not sure how someone would mount saddlebags and a tail pack on it. That's why I suspect they'll have a Strada version in a couple years. Long story short, the future is BRIGHT for Ducati if this is the direction they're heading. I'd love to have that belt drive on my Diavel. Hope an aftermarket company gets wise and makes a conversion kit. A while back there was a company making a belt conversion kit for the 955i Speed Triple...

+MotoErgoSum Yeah thanks fir that man. I know Ducati has a bright future, i visited the factory last year, a great experience indeed. Made me appreciate my Diavel more. @XXXDeadhead
@XXXDeadhead 8 лет назад
+MotoErgoSum sat on the standard Diavel for awhile today - the stance on the lower back is a bit tense compared to the XDiavel - so I would assume the mid pegs would be more cozy on the X but still feel exactly like a less top heavy Diavel

@MotoErgoSum
@MotoErgoSum 8 лет назад
+David Borisyuk What's hard to repair? I hear accessing the rear header is a pain, but it's probably not nearly as bad as my Diavel Carbon. At least this bike you can just take off the seat to remove the tank. Previous Diavel you have to strip everything off (tachs, intake covers, lower tach shroud, tank cover). Half hour later you can finally access the fuel cell. Having tuned my Diavel, I wouldn't bother swapping out the headers on either bike. They're friggin' huge stock. Just needs a bassy uncorked slip-on.

@MotoErgoSum
@MotoErgoSum 8 лет назад
+SuperGuDo Not sure what you mean by boldness. IMO, the ride quality matches the Ducati appeal. It has the fantastic handling characteristics and massive acceleration of the Diavel. It's just been beautifully refined and focused on the core attributes that make the original Diavel great. I wish there were more videos online of uncorked XDiavels. It just sounds wicked. Pure chest-thumping bass.

+SUB. DELINQUENT If ABS and DTC were forced on 24/7 I'd agree with you, but you can turn all of that off. Completely optional. Most of the time I ride around with my Diavel set to Sport, full power, DTC off. I leave ABS on because the only time it really kicks in is when you actually need it. Side-by-side testing has shown ABS universally stops you faster than even the most skilled near-lock braking maneuver, especially on loose stuff or in the rain. DTC is just a handy safety net in case you're off your game and just want to get home to your family at the end of the day in shitty weather. I only really use it when I see a really mess coming up or the rain starts dropping. Worked great when I was living in Baltimore and Ohio. Handled monsoon thunderstorm level rain with a shrug. Nice to have on a heavy fat bike that breaks the rear tire free on hot dry pavement. On my 955i Speed Triple I never needed it because that bike is so damned easy to throw around and recover from slides. Used to practice near-lock braking drills in the rain back in Ohio until I got to the point where I could slide the rear and modulate the front juuuuuust to the point before locking up. Same on the 1098 (zero aids). Those drills saved my ass quite a few times on the 1098.
