Ewan McGregor recently talked about the possibility of a Kenobi Season 2 - even hinting that Disney and Lucasfilm are looking into it. Given the current state of Star Wars on TV... can they afford not to? I think no.

Nah, I am against Ecks (in the specific case of this video, I usually like his stuff). Disney has every choice they want. And they will choose any of them they want. You want a thing they messed up worse than even their WORST of Star Wars stuff? Dinotopia. It was a bit of some semi-picture books about a secret island that had dinosaurs still, seems to take place during the age of sail/exploration. Surprisingly deep lore for something that is literally two books with very heavy illustrations, including the actual key code to translating dinosaur written language into English. Its an adventure in the first book about finding oneself on the island, and integrating into the culture of it. In the second one, its about dealing with an ancient civilization's relics, including a "red sunstone" that is both potent but also why the old civilization died, along with their mechanical dinosaurs (yes, this old age went at gone, but the actual normal dinosaurs and the people who live with them survive past that). Disney: Its all white and black now. Oh, hey. A crystal is missing. Now all the dinosaurs, especially flying ones, want to kill everyone unless they fix the crystal tower. DOOOOOOOM! Oh, crystal restored. Everything good. Screw you, original source material!

@dynastes4938
@dynastes4938 2 часа назад
@@silverdeathgamer2907 Race and gender for themselves are *very specifically* *not* the problem. The problem is that the underlying politics are being prioritized over narrative structure and quality of writing. The Reeva subplot would never have been forced in if they hadn't needed a "spot" for a female black heroine in a prominent spot. I agree, a black Obi-Wan would make little difference (other than Ewan no longer being there, of course, but assuming that an equal actor would succeed him), if the script was good otherwise. But that is the precise point: That question isn't the one that is being asked first. Instead the first thought is "How do we get this character in there?!" and this is then pursued at any cost. The script is being modified to fit it, written around it, no further fucks given, although it is clear from the start that the fandom wants a focus on Vader and Obi-Wan. That approach does not work. Don't get me wrong, I do not like to overemphasize these things and, believe me or not (I am sure you will after this rant :P), I do not get all that bothered with them most of the time. Sometimes "woke" aspects are implemented rather well even and the story does not suffer, like with Netflix's Sandman adaption. Story and cinematography clearly came first there and that is the way it should be. Star Wars, however, has forced these politics down people's throat at the expense of the plot very often and very aggressively by now. Take Episode VIII alone and tell me that that movie isn't riddled with them. The entire Finn arc could be cut from the plot and the movie would turn out the same, there is no pay-off to it, not character development, just no narrative reason for it to be there. Other, of course, than to tell us "war is bad, so is slavery". Well, yeah ... no shit.

When I learned Acolyte had a bigger budget than most of the movies I realized it was pretty much impossible for it to succeed. Especially since you can't necessarily measure if a show that's only on streaming services isn't making its money back, because it's not necessarily about getting high views if other shows on the platform are getting views. The raw viewing numbers don't necessarily tell you what shows are keeping people subscribed and which ones are just "there" when they have nothing else to watch
@dynastes4938
@dynastes4938 9 часов назад
You might think that, but engagement actually tells you a lot. Yes, it is not as simple as "tickets sold", but a combination of people watching the show, a subsequent wave of new subscribers and overall view time can still determine success to a point. You are right, however, for it to be even worth the consideration of a second season at that budget, it would have needed to be a giant success. I have no idea how anyone at Disney thought that likely :D

Most importantly: Qui-Gon Leaving Qui-Gon in gives SO MANY options for flashbacks and training. Obi-Wan still needs to learn (from Qui-Gon, so getting Liam Neeson back properly would be amazing) how to become a force ghost after death, that could take him down the path of coming to terms with Anakin - bringing the flashbacks. And seeing Vader being Vader and demolishing through towns and combatting his own relationship with the Emperor and his place in the Empire, all during a futile search for Kenobi, would be great to see.

Seeing the same past events from both Anakin and Obi-Wans perspectives and how differing interpretations drove them apart is really important I think. Obi-Wan really wanted the best for Anakin, he wanted to make Qui-Gon proud and fulfill his promise. Meanwhile Anakin felt constantly held back and talked down to. This is shown a lot in Episode II, but the Clone Wars series doesn’t do that great of a job at exploring it further.

This might be an unpopular opinion but Lucasfilm/Disney made a huge mistake listening to that very loud nostalgia driven fans demanding a Kenobi show not thinking about whether that would make actually sense without breaking any continuity. ANH is pretty clear on a couple of things here: The last time Kenobi was called Obi-Wan was before Luke's birth. The last time Kenobi served under Bail Organa was in the Clone Wars. Leia never met Kenobi, otherwise she would have referred to it in her message and would have cared more about Kenobi's death. Kenobi did not have any encounters with the Empire after the end of the Clone Wars anyone in the Empire knew about as Tarkin presumed Kenobi to be long dead. It is unlikely that Kenobi had any major adventures after going into exile on Tatooine as it is hard to go unnoticed by the Empire and Kenobi did not give any hints in the OT that he did. Kenobi and Vader did not meet again after Anakin's fall as they only talk about the time when Vader left Kenobi while still being the learner but never about any sort of confrontation after that. And when Tarkin wondered about Kenobi still being alive Vader could have mentioned that but he did not. Because they never met. With all these facts one has to question whether there is any story about Kenobi worth to be told between RotS and ANH without breaking continuity. There is none. Obi-Wan's story was already told. Four movies, a TV show of seven seasons and loads of extended media. Even Kenobi learning about cosmic force is not really worth to be told, we already had that story with Yoda in grander scale. People claim to care about continuity of all kind of things for actually new stories but when nostalgia kicks in like for some popular character, for some reason they do not care anymore. And in order to fulfill that demand Disney just did the same and basically delivered a poorly written fan fiction. Lucasfilm/Disney needs to focus way more on the characters whose stories and sometimes even fates are not yet told. Although their first seasons were poor, if Lucasfilm learned their lesson about not neglecting writing quality they can still save Ahsoka, Mando, Boba, Thrawn and all the others whose fate remains yet unknown. Star Wars has enough of characters popular enough to not have the need break major continuities in order to make a series about a fan favorite (who already has enough stories about him) worth to be watched.

I think a season 2 should be based around Qui-gon teaching and trying Obi-Wan the secrets of the force that he and Yoda had learned. And to do so, Obi-wan must accept his past with Anikan and... So, instead of harrying the shuttle with TIE fighters so they could disable it up close and capture it, he had the star destroyer shoot at it with the turbolasers. It's like trying to shoot a small passenger cruise ship down using a battleship's main guns. Then, instead of having the star destroyer continue after the smaller ship and going after Kenobi by himself, in the shuttle, he used to land on the planet anyway, he has the whole war ship chase after Kenobi and doesn't just simply unleash the TIE fighter complement and completely destroy the shuttle before it escapes. And it's not like it would be just fan service. Fan Service would be trying to gather as many remaining clone wars characters and shoving them into episodes. A Darth Vader show could fill in the blanks regarding why Vader was feared outside of his interactions with the core Skywalker Saga characters. The average citizen of the Republic, Empire, or random Rebel, isn't going to know of or even believe in Vader. A Vader show could make every action against the Empire and Vader seem even more desperate.

Everybody has their own views of 'Why X show/film was bad' (Some perhaps more valid and less screechy than others), but until they address that issue, their writing problem (Followed by their on-and-off directing problem), I just don't see how it's going to get better. All the stories and concepts in the galaxy won't mean anything if they're written with half-eaten crayons.

Honestly, for me, the whole 2nd half of Kenobi felt like two guys drafted it in a bar on a napkin, called it in the next day, telling the writing team to make something out it by the next day, so that they could jump into the filming the next day when they returned to work recovered from their hangovers. Because the writing slipped down hill from the very moment that Reva kidnapped Leia for the 2nd time. The only things good about it from then on was the “duel” between Vader and Reva, Obi-Wan giving Luke that toy and Obi-Wan meeting Qui-Gon’s Force ghost. And at the time, I believe that they had suggested that they had developed a plot for a show at a bar just like that in some interview with Filoni and Favreau.

I'm mostly frustrated that so much of Disney's production had good individual elements... A scene here, a character there, maybe a story concept, but so often they fail to stick the landing. They seem to always manage to fumble the writing, and waste the potential they have, or at the very least under-deliver. It feels like they're stuck in the same hole as 'it's a story for kids, it doesn't need to be good', but sometimes replacing 'kids' with 'fans' and I'm not sure which one makes me want to defenestrate their writers more. Except you, Andor, you're doing great. Keep it up.

I've just been disappointed too many times. The games, the books, the movies, the TV series. I just can't with this IP anymore. Even when they give the things I wanted (Thrawn) they did it in a way that ignores whats already been established about characters. Why is Thrawn even in Star Wars Rebels? He had nothing to do with hunting for rebels or escaped jedi. Hes supposed to be off forging the empire of the hand, not chasing some annoying brat who somehow is out-shined by every side character in the show DESPITE BEING THE MAIN CHARACTER! So when I knew ahead of time that Thrawn was going to be tied to the Ahsoka show just because of his awkward inclusion in Rebels, I was already apathetic to it. Yet honestly, I think it was book of Boba Fett that probably sent me down the path of total apathy. I read the bounty hunter wars series and realized immediately this is not what we were getting. I'm just so tired of Disney thinking they can do it better than the decades of work that predates their ownership of the IP. I hate going in assuming the worst and being right again and again. This was a turn-key IP, its so easy to make success with and they just refuse to do it. Nothing left to do but just accept that im old and the world of creativity I grew up in, all those people are old now too, and the youth that moved into their place, can't outshine what was, but they sure can set it on fire.

If it ends up being another season set during his isolation on tatooine. I would love to see something like from the first couple of books in The Last Jedi kids books I read when I was young. Its such a great idea and would work really well with someone like Quinlan Vos. But it focuses on the struggle obi wan faced with wanting to serve the galaxy and fight against the empire morally but also know he needs to stay and protect Luke. And while he does leave tatooine in that series, its very very short and kinda has to happen so no one finds out about luke but I do agree that would be pretty messy.

Kenobi should always have been about two things: 1. Obi keeping an eye on Luke while living as a hermit. 2. Learning how to become a Force Ghost from Qui-Gon. Well, we all know how the show we already got dealt with this. Luke is there, but if we blink we basically miss him & he's overshadowed by his sister that should never ever get to know Obi as much as she did, even as a ten year old. And since Luke was chased by Reva, who should have been VERY dead before she even teleported to Tatooine & without receiving any medical care (that should not be able to save her anyway), & now a still living Reva is allowed to continue living knowing all she knows & Obi is OK with that. I don't think most are interested in a continuation that has totally destroyed canon, especially in ANH, to it's very core. And they brought Liam back as Qui-Gon for like ten seconds! Saying things that meant nothing & that we already knew or could guess. No training, nothing. And here's the really big issue with a potential continued show. Liam Neeson has firmly been perfectly clear about that he is NEVER returning to SW & playing Qui-Gon ever again! Not even as a voice only! If they are gonna make a continuation it MUST be about Obi learning how to be a Force Ghost now. How can he learn that if the man that plays the man that teaches him this thing now refuses to return since they very much ignored their final shot at it already? Are they gonna recast Liam? Good luck with that. Worked out "well" for the Solo movie - not. Are they gonna deepfake him? Liam is not dead yet so they can "Tarkin-steal" that without permission yet again. And if Liam doesn't wanna do this himself why would he give permission to AI? Are they gonna tell a different story than the path of learning how to be a Force Ghost? Well, news bulletin; that is already what the Kenobi show already is! A different story than the one they should have told & made! Kenobi maybe got some half-decent views but with each episode it dropped & the finale was no hit. People only tuned in because it was legacy based & the hype was therefor real - until we got the result that did anything but honor the legacy. They already had a good ship to jump on to, but decided to crash & burn it instead. Continuing the Kenobi show now is literary whipping an already dead horse, it's not gonna get back up & start running. And telling a different Kenobi story more focused on Clone Wars... That could have been interesting if the hype wasn't already dead. They HAD their shot at this. But it was a one time shot. Lucasfilm did not take it. Because they made the Kenobi show for the wrong reason. They didn't make it to please the fans. They only made it to shut us up so we would quit asking for it. We got something that has the name Kenobi on it. But it's not the Kenobi story we were looking for. The best thing to do now is simply to move along. Move along. Because if we do get more, how do we know they will make it for the right reasons this time? Or just because they are so freaking desperate for money?

I think one problem with the Star Wars fandom is that it takes the mainstream shows WAY TOO SERIOUSLY. It's clear from the very start of Lucas's vision that these shows were not to be taken too seriously, or be meticulously accurate - Star Wars is a show targeted for a mainstream audience. It's awesome that the shows and the universe have expanded in many ways, including adding detailed lore content, that was brought out in games like KOTOR. But I think the hardcore fandom just fails to admit that the core Star Wars experience is targeted for the mainstream audience, and in my opinion is way too hard on these shows. Even though I'm not too big of a fan of these shows, it's what brings in the money, is inspiring to kids and brings in new fans who dive deeper into the genre - the mainstream shows play a key role in keeping Star Wars alive and giving us hardcore fans the less often seen hardcore content we enjoy too.

Kenobi season 2 should not be Kenobi season 2. It should be "Vader season 1" - Shift the POV to Vader, explore dark, adult stories with Anakin coming to terms with being Vader, and have it be FULL of flashback scenes with Anakin and Kenobi during the Clone Wars. Contrast those experiences with what Vader is in the "now" of the show. The perspective shift will allow for a more clean start, the "Vader" name will certainly draw people in, and there will be lots of story opportunities that don't break established lore, while still including lots of Kenobi. Adding to this, a Vader show would also give Disney a way to soft-introduce both Starkiller and Cal Kestis into live-action, but have their stories be seen from the Vader perspective. There's a lot of potential here. Plus, there's the whole purge thing with Vader hunting down Jedi.

Disney can do characters all day, that's not an issue. *The problem is that Disney never understood the cornerstone to a **_fandom_** is LORE.* The depth of escapism people look for. Andor did good because it was hinged more on exploring the world as fans always are want to do, providing unique and new perspectives and interesting situations from which characters and conflict can spawn. When you don't do this, you might get great characters or good entertainment, but you don't grow the roots of a fandom. Stories that are way too character-driven can suspend an audience for the time they're watching; a fandom is composed of people looking for deep, deep escapism that goes beyond the short-term screen time... something that spawns discussion, additional immersion, pokes at what-if scenarios, and allows exploration or reimagination of the lore. These shows aren't doing that, so they come off as empty. They're either recycling tropes or trying to build on already deeply established concepts that are doomed to dead-end like continuing Vader and Obi-wan in a clash; there's not enough there to build a whole show. Worse, when you get the writing staff being told to push for an agenda to appease an audience that doesn't exist with this, they start grabbing real-world concepts and shoving [Woke] concepts in that constantly reminds the audience about the real world which is the EXACT OPPOSITE of ESCAPISM. . What LucasFilm needs to do now is stop recycling through old ideas and cliches; Star Wars is devolving into "show rot"; there's almost nothing else left to do in the existing Skywalker Saga. They can't rely on people coming back to something nostalgic and familiar to draw in more people because Star Wars is already peaked out... it's almost incapable of growth. It's time to progress Star Wars in new directions. There's a huge galaxy out there and they're too scared to let go of Skywalker stories and thinking people will be awed about Jedi. Explore other aliens. Make up cultures. Why not a show about a shipyard crew? What about something like how the X-Wing series was invented, or other ships in winning designs? That would breathe SO MUCH LIFE into Star Wars. Or what about the stressors in the New Republic? Disney just threw us straight back to the recycled gritty rebellion against a Palpatine-led evil faction. We never got a chance to see much of the New Republic. What about the Hutts? Why don't we see an origin story to Jabba's rise in power? Give us new factions and different wars. I also think taking a step after Rey and start having the Yuuzhan Vong encroaching on the galaxy.

Maybe a good way to continue the “Kenobi” show while giving in to Ewan’s request to be in the Clone Wars armor, could be to write and expand the moments of Ben Kenobi talking to and training Luke between the major scenes of A New Hope. Allow for a bigger connection between Kenobi and Luke with telling of stories from the Clone Wars or beyond. Not sure how people would take those scenes of Ewan being in Alec’s shoes, but it may be a good way to tell those flashback stories, just my opinion.

I'm kinda satisfied with where the Obi-Wan show is right now. You can tell that it seemed like the plot was wrapped up in a bow, and it usually isn't like that when there is going to be a second season. Usually the end of the first season would tease at something that would happen in the second season if a show had a second season. That just didn't happen with the Kenobi series.
