I love this portrayal of Pale King as desperate and fearful, losing his mind as he tries everything he can to contain the Infection. It's much more emotionally impactful than "He was a jerk to his kids and he loved buzzsaws," although I like that version too.

I loved it when The Pale King flinched after the "Promise me a kiss" line. You've just gotta love small details like that since they really bring an animation to life!

1:04 is a m a z i n g. I can feel the waves of regret pouring off of him from the screen. He's literally just looking out on a sea of *his own dead children.* Its all just incredible!

"No cost too great" man seeing everyone he basically sacrifice to attempt and stop the radiance disappear behind him is quite a sight especially since everything failed

“Worse than being remembered as a villain, is to be forgotten.” That’s basically the vibes that hollow knight gives me. And so does this splendid animation.

This video alone was enough to get me back into Hollow Knight, good job. I just love the attention to detail. If I may, I will attempt to break it down in terms of events. Just a little warning, this comment is LONG, like stupid long. I also have a little tendency for drama so expect some vocabulary of that kind. 0:00-0:30 Radiance : The King stumbles upon a guard fallen to the infection, the Radiance manifesting through it in either a physical or symbolical manner. "The moth tied to his [God's] hand," being the infected guard laying as a trap for PK, tied to the Radiance via her hivemind. If I had to situate this in the canon lore I'd say this event would fit somewhere between her first return as the infection and a little before PK devised his plan to permanently seal her away. He is wary, not knowing what has happened to the guard, and he nearly falls to the trap. However, something must have happened, since he managed to break out of Radiance's grasp. 0:30-0:46 Bargain : I bet using Hera was just for the convenience of it, wasn't it? Anyways, Hera pops up, the hard to please of the Dreamers. She offers the final piece to sealing the Radiance, but bargains for something. If you're even somewhat familiar with the story, then you know what it was : a child. A successor. Hornet. PK reluctantly agrees, you can see him flinch as she circles him, only to flinch even harder at the word "kiss". Clearly he isn't a fan of the idea, but he must protect the kingdom no matter the cost. Their relation is an uneasy one, as they both look away at the "Don't return to it," line, preceded immediately by an image of Hornet when she was young. Even if the Pale Lady understood why this was done and held no grudge, PK himself didn't feel this way, he felt shame, and Hornet must've been a constant reminder of that shame for him. He sired a child only so her mother would act as a seal to protect Hallownest, how do you want him not to feel guilty for that? 0:46-0:52 Illusion : This part looks to me as him reassuring his people, making to look as a wise and good leader. The lyrics "so with advice of the dead," might as well be him confessing but twisting the truth to the populace. He never took advice of the Dreamers, he only requested of them to play this role to help in the kingdom's perpetuation. In this place, he made them heroes, figures to be celebrated for their "selfless" deed. Also, the light he shines over the image of Hera, him and Hornet could be representative of hiding the truth, for it may have been unbearable to him. 0:46-1:02 Guilt 1/2 : PK snaps, literally, he has a breakdown. His shame and guilt are too much, and all he has done for the sake of Hallownest comes back to haunt him as everything falls apart around him. The Dreamers and the line "three voices return I'm all alone," could be him hallucinating or being visited by their spirits when they were still strong enough to do so at will. Spoiler : It is said and/or heavily implied in game that the Dreamers have weakened over their long period of slumber, barely able to intervene in the real world anymore. PK turns to a black egg, alike the one found in the birthplace, connecting to the Void being used as a defense against the infection. However, he sees the Radiance in the reflection, implying even he can't keep her out of his mind, either he his starting to succumb, or he is worried of the havoc she may unleash upon the world if unproperly sealed and getting free. If she is the one to say "Say hello, honey I'm home," and not the one this is directed to, so saying this to PK, she may even be taunting him, trying to find a weakness to exploit. 1:02-1:12 Guilt 2/2 : Here the focus shifts to his own offspring, who he sacrificed hundreds, thousands of in the hope of creating something powerful enough to contain the Radiance. Something too empty, in any manner possible, to be manipulated by her. His sanity is clearly going down, reminded of the children he lost in this quest to stop the kingdom's fall, his feelings gets the best of him, and he falls as Void surrounds him, presumably consuming him as a shadow looms over him, maybe a mass of Void about to fall upon PK? This could be a way to signify his death in the Dream world. 1:12-1:35 Memories : PK recalls upon important moments and persons he shared his life with, his wife and son, who he eventually was separated from. A small interlude happens from 1:16 to 1:19 where the Void is slowly killing him, his tears mixing with the shadowy liquid responsible for his death. Right after he recalls how everyone who has been important to him, be it for their use or his attachment to them, slowly vanished from his life, leaving him alone. One by one they go, in a surprisingly chronological order. 1:35-1:57 Lost ruler : This section is bland, we only see him after his death, sat on his throne in the White Palace, now forever stuck in the Dream World, with his guards and his retainers oblivious to their surroundings, forever on duty, awaiting orders that will never come. At the end, the Knight comes, and although PK's life had ended on a sour note, away from all and on his own, this one surviving child of his will carry on his legacy. They will reignite the kingdom's hope. The time has come for the light to be extinguished.

This is great I can see your own unique take on this song it's really cool. I love the scene where the pale king is standing in the middle and everyone around him is disappearing it makes you realize just how alone he is when pale king dies.

I love the depiction of pk here, most of the time he ends up being demonized but he was just a broken desperate man. He lost his mind as he saw all that he worked for all who he cared for crumble around him. So lost that he would even sacrifice his own children to try to stop the infection. It's a sad story and I love that for once hes not just a monster

At 1:20 can we appreciate two things. Number one: baby Hornet. Number two: Quirrel has a bow tie.

i *cannot* stop watching this!! there's so many little details, from the pale king's expressions, to the flinch, the wonderful sketchy drawings... this is one of my favorite hollow knight animations/animatics now!! i also love the perspective we're given: we never get to see the pale king's side of the story- only the end result of his decisions. a lot of people in the fandom like to joke about him or even paint him as a villain, but personally, i think he's such a more interesting and deep character. in a way, he was a victim just as much as his citizens were, and this showcases that perfectly! thank you so much for making this :)

When I played HK and came accross the Pale King's corpse on the throne I thought of it as a pretty anticlimatic event. God this video really honors that broken bug's slow descend into decadence. That last shot of the king on his throne is such a ridiculously haunting moment omg. I'm so glad you made this video, it really makes a kinda dull moment into a fucking haunting reveal. I'm honestly so inspired.

this is one of my favorite hollow knight animatics and i just saw this today. the emotions, expressions, the part where the siblings are circling around pk while he looks like he's going bonkers is,,, astonishing. this is impressive, i love everything in this animatic

As funny as 'haha yeet the children into the pit for feeling' dad interpretation is, this interpretation feels way more satisfying and realistic. A guy who is cracking under desperation, a king who cared too much that it destroys him...

0:48 okay just wanna say I just love the part where the string breaks do almost demonstrate pale kind just losing it in the next few scenes, this animation also just, *mwah* chefs kiss, amazing. I liked how he flinched and he really seemed alive in the animation!

there's SO many great moments in this and i love how it makes the lyrics fit the lore! "A spider preaching with poison on it's lips, 'to get out of here is to promise me a kiss'" DAMN that fits well with Herrah because she IS a spider and the Pale King promised her a kid. The Infection showing up with "God returned with a moth chained to his hand" is GREAT, god is the moth! "Three voices ring out all alone" with the dreamers appearing is just poetic cinema honestly. There's more but those stuck with me the most this animatic is great honestly, and does catholic bugcore great justice

The animation is really good. I think that Pale King is an interesting character and I don't really understand why he is called the bad one. Fact, he did bad things, but he did it for his subjects. He did not want Radiance to convict others. In my opinion he could be compared with Asgore from Undertale. They are similar in some ways. Pale king simply chose a way that had this and no other consequences. This makes him an interesting character and you can analyze his actions for a long time. In RPG such a character is called Chaotically Good.

I love how well you portray all the dread the Pale King must’ve gone through and how much he lost. With a bleak ending. It’s ominous to see him just sitting there, knowing it’s a corpse, and only confirmed when Ghost finds him. Tidbits I love - Herrah blinking, Pale King terrified of his reflection showing infected eyes, and the failed vessels surrounding him and the *realization* of what he did.

Average low tier HK fan:fork man bad Casual high tier HK enjoyer:the pale king's poor choices could be explained by his constant fear of the radiance,ptsd from breeding with a worm spider thing,cheating on his wife WHILE mass producing and killing his children,helplessly realizing the people around him are either dying/going to die (isma/dryya), disappearing completey (hegemol/ze'mer/white lady) or just have a blinding faith on him (ogrim,pure vessel). i also like to think that the pale king knew about the grimm troupe (considering the white lady does) and that just adds more pressure ontop of all said beforehand because if the kingdom falls, the troupe will just clean up whats left and mind their own ritual business

Your pale king is great, the more angular face perfectly fits the serious tone. With all the light hearted HK animatics, this is a welcome change of pace

It's sad that everything was against the pale king, the guy just wanted to rule a kingdom. It's even more sad that everyone left him or died. He literally got swallowed by the void while trying to protect his kingdom and yet nobody knows,not even his wife.. christ, imagine if everyone didn't know you died. Terrible. I love your interpretation of the pale king,simply perfect .

Everyone hates on The Pale King for what he did, but he was panicked. He didn't know what to do. He was lost, and in the end, alone. He did what he thought was right. His kingdom was at risk, and he knew that, he did what he could.

Okay so I'm coming back to this animation cuz it's still epic and dang, the improvement since this animation is crazy! Comparing it to the king & lion heart animation, you can really see how ur style got better since this one ^^

honestly, i feel sorry for the pale king. i mean yeah he killed thousands of his children and done terrible things but, he didnt want, he had to. the radiance is making him do this stuff to stop an plauge and even then, he fails.

Poor PK. Regardless of if you love him or hate him and of his sometimes bad decisions, PK is one of the saddest and most tragic characters in this game. Yeah sure, he took over parts of other people's territories, but he made pacts with the Mantises, Mosskin, Deepnesters,Bees, and Moths. On the other hand, the Radiance just destroyed the man. She took everything he had and cared for and made it fall to ruin. Pale King isn't the best person, but Radiance went overboard with her revenge. She could've demanded to stay separate from Hallownest like the Bees or Mantises and have her worshippers remain with her, but she went out of her way to make this man(and everyone else) suffer instead.

Have you ever considered how weird the radiance’s character design is, her puffy chest is three time the size of her head with three head-sized coronal spikes and hips twice the size of her abdomen and legs the length of the radiance’s entire body. Her wings are bird-like not chitin, but the spikes are the shape of her crown despite it looking bone like? The symbol surrounding the radiance is a compass rose that has inward protrusions yet rotates

when i first heard the song it felt like it was MADE for HK, especially with the moth that knows a different way, "don't remember it, don't return to it" being similar to the lore tablet before the abyss, the spider mother basically describing the relationship between the pale king and Herrah, i didn't even realise that the 3 voices from the gramophone could be interpreted as the 3 dreamers, great job!

This is a fantastic video and makes the Pale King look like the amazing, tragic hero he is. In Hollow Knight, it's strongly implied that at the time of the Pale King's arrival the majority of the world was bereft of meaningful life, that the overwhelming number of bugs having nothing beyond base instinct and that the Pale King tried his best to grant free will to the bugs and let them carve their own path. The Radiance despised this, wanting everything to exist as part of itself. From how the remaining moth functions, it seems that they alone could exist inside the dreams offered by the Radiance, her chosen people or anointed lieutenants. No cost was too great because, for the King, he was quite literally fighting to grant all bugs the ability to self-determine. He was willing to sacrifice countless children and even offer himself on the sacrificial altar if he could guarantee a future for the mortal bugs. And, from the indication that there are now scattered settlements that can travel and interact, it seems that even in his defeat the Pale King still won. Hallownest could fall and never be saved by Ghost, and the Pale King's goal of granting the bugs self-awareness and control over their own fate would still have come to fruition. Suck it, Tang Moth. Even if your plan hadn't been stopped, your ambitions could never match that of the Pale King.

I love the fact that instead of bringing back a light in this game, you literally smother it, and erase all trace of it. It’s *so* cool, and in my opinion makes the game even more satisfying to complete.

This made me go from a PK hater to making him my favourite character, oh my god, the poor dude. All the sacrifices he made, all for nothing. This animatic made me think more about the living hell it must have been for the pale king to try and run a kingdom where an angry goddess is taking over the minds of you subjects and you have to cross lines you might never have if you hadn't been pushed. He's still not my favorite character, but in a way. this made me pity him 10/10

Ok i watched this on repeat way too many times, i saw no comments mentioning how well animated that husk on the beggining is Now that i am thinking, is there any mention that the king wanted SPECIFICALLY the moth kin in his kingdom? If not, it just makes his story even more cruel, a enemy he didnt even want to make destroyed his life's work and a lot of other things, or he brought it upon himself wanting the moth bois, idk Also this is awesome, i love every part of this

Man, this animatic utilizes so many of my favourite concepts... the greater threat first revealing itself in the form of a corrupted symbol of order (the infected sentry), painful memories and underlying grief shown in brief and symbolic flashes, the wide shot of what once was now slowly fading away bit by bit, the ending mirroring the beginning and bringing everything full circle through the tie-in with the game, overall using the lyrics and flow of the song to parallel some very clever visuals, and of course, the Pale Fork's gorgeous chad jawline. Not to even mention all the lovely little details everyone's been pointing out! I find myself rewatching this one a lot, it's just so good. Phenomenal job! So glad to discover little gems like this from the fandom, they really add a whole new layer to the game

While this is accurate I feel most people underestimate the pale king. This was a higher being revered as a god who was much stronger than the pure vessel. I feel he could put a decent fight against the radiance itself, albeit not winning.

the final scene kinda makes me think maybe the pale king isn't dead but due to the void is severely weakened almost like a vegetable and it's us that deals the final blow ending his suffering and stagnation. a bit dark sure but it kinda looks like it from what he's gone through :/

This is certainly one of the most well-drawn animatics I have ever seen about hollow knight, and the small details just help bring the overall emotions and beauty of the antimatic along with the lore portrayed here from hollow knight together.
