I did the same with scrap metal. To line holes up I used a sheet of sticky label paper and adhered them to device and lined up holes. Marked screw points on paper then lined up sticky paper to metal bars and marked location and drilled holes.

Agree, this mod is well within most peoples ability, very little diy skills needed, in fack none to speak of, and cheap. Although i did need steel drill bits and the like, so i spent a little more, all from amazon including the steel plate. Now just need to set aside some time

Ivan, I had recently received my Honeycomb Alpha & Bravo units and as I contemplate mounting them, along with the Meza-Steam Gauge Cockpit Simulator Panel Kit, I certainly appreciate your video. The use of the bracket seems like a viable solution for your application, but I would caution the removal of screws from either unit because a screw could also be an internal fastener between the Yoke or Throttle housing and a switch, indicator, or actuator. With my unit spacing the Alpha & Bravo units in accordance with the panel requirements is a primary concern. I like how you secured it underneath the desktop. I may secure the A & B units on top of a 1" x 6" wood plank and sandwich it underneath the bottom of my desktop. Ivan, whatever I decide, thanks for getting me thinking about my options for this fabrication. Enjoy your simulator and may God Bless.

Thanks for your thoughts. I at one point considered the option of building a small shelf under the desktop to accommodate the Honeycomb units, I ended up going a different route of mounting as in the video. I have had no issues with instability. I am on them fairly frequently, but I do think it would be safer to mount on a shelf under the desktop or just on top of the desktop.

Was getting ready to go to a HD in the morning when this video reminded me I have a bunch of these in the garage. Now it’s 1AM and the drill is getting broke out.

Wow!!! Just saw the commercial version for 50 bucks wow!!!

There are several commercial variants out there. Depending on if you have access to the drill bits used in the video, this way is way cheaper and far more flexible. If you don't, you really only save about 15-20 bucks, but sometimes it's fun to make stuff with your own hands.

I would stagger the middle bracket closer to the front and the side brackets further back would cut down on the giggles yours seems to have. Not doing what you did, I even consider 3 brackets in the back and 3 up front considering your setup and not wanting any giggle at all. But as a wood hobby-ist, I'd prefer to make a wooden harness that your controls would fit in to be as solid as possible. The wiggle (no matter how slight) would feel cheesy to me. Cheers!

That makes sense. I did think about having something like you described, but just never did it. Thanks for the input!

I love the idea, however I have a question/concern. In the video, at about 8 minutes, it looks like there is a lot of wobble on the alpha and especially the bravo. How does it do when manipulating the yoke... do you get a lot of bouncing on the alpha and the bravo units, or is it more stable than it looks?
@IvanSkyFlight
@IvanSkyFlight Год назад
It's way more stable because for the video I just basically got it in place and didn't fully tighten or have the round part of the C-clamp directly on the metal strap tie. Having said that, it's not as stable as having it mounted on top of the desk that's for sure, but I would say for my setup, it's about 80 percent as stable which is plenty for me.

@@JW-jl8iq I don't have the middle piece anymore, but I am almost positive it's 12 inch 12 gauge strap tie from Home Depot. The side pieces are 8 inch 12 gauge strap ties.

Honeycomb recommends not doing this. The top mount can not handle the stress.
