When you're in your hive, click the little circle button in the middle at the bottom of the screen. I think you should be able to edit your hive even though in the tutorial.

isnt matching landforms much better than matching likes?

For harvesting, matching landform increases agility (speed), but not capacity. Matching likes increases how much they can hold.
