Day 9, Day 10, and Day 11 in Saint Emilion
First day: drove from Les Eyzies and stopped in Sarlat to check out the open market. Arrived in Saint Emilion and started off our stay with a walking tour of the city where we learned about Saint Emilion and visited the cave where he lived, as well as 8th century and 11th crypts. We tried the OG macaron, which was meant to be eaten as a pick-me-up for the Catholics while they fasted during lent. For dinner, we opted out of eating in a restaurant and went to the corner market to pick up bread, cheese, butter, and wine and enjoyed all of it from the comfort of our hotel room and bathrobes at Hotel de Pavie.
Second day: started off the morning with breakfast from Mie et Merlot. Steve picked up a croque monsieur, chocolate croissant, and tomato feta quiche. We were fueled and ready for all-day winery tours with our wonderful private driver and wine expert, Karim from Ophorus. Started off with Chateau de Tailhas where I discovered my love of pomerols. Next was Chateau Jean Faure where Steve indulged in a generous portion of wine tastings. Had a quick lunch break from Fromagerie La Moineaudiere where we stuffed our faces holes with truffle sausage, truffle gouda, and delicious sandwiches. We ended the wine tours that day at Chateau Tour Baladoz. For dinner, we ate at L'Envers du Decor and had creamy parsnip soup, cod, wild boar stew, spicy pineapple casserole, and a grand marnier souffle. Everything was *chef's kiss*.
Third and last day: began the day at Chateau Rayne Vigneau where I was able to enjoy all the sauternes (yum). Had lunch at Le Pistou in Martillac, where I was able to get a basic and delicious cheeseburger. Our winery tours in Saint Emilion ended with Chateau Haut Bailly and Chateau Malartic Lagraviere. Lots of wine was consumed. By Steve. 😂
