A family video from Mr. Leonard To "我的祖輩 Home Movie of Hong Kong 1930s". Part 1 - Port Cunnington Lodge Roger Williams Somewhere In Time 宋王臺 - 3:20 (Maksim Mrvisa - Somewhere in Time/The Old Woman)
Excellent!! At last we can see a movie about the life of the Hong Kong middle class in the olden days, not always about Sheung Wan, Wan Chai, the New Territories etc etc etc those relatively poor dustrict!! Well done!!👍👍👍👏👏👏
Grateful thanks to Mr Leonard To for sharing this family film with us. It is a precious record of prosperous family life in 1930s Hong Kong. Maybe he was inspired to post it on RU-vid after seeing the many films by Mr Michael Rogge - a banker from the Netherlands who worked in HK in the 1960s. His many films are here on RU-vid.
I have watched this gem several times and will watch it again. Here is a Chinese family well-established and prosperous, with joy and confidence in their position. Full of humour and fun, with young women and boys enjoying their time together. I agree with Michelle Currier (lower down) who writes: "Makes me cry". There is so much hopefulness and peace in the film, it makes me feel emotional for the past. And a Hong Kong that has vanished!
Yes, elegant and happy. On a family outing there is plenty of humour from the young men. And the young ladies are relaxed, happy and well-dressed. I have watched this several times - each time I notice something new.....
I guess life could be simple and relaxed in those days, but the video might have failed to capture the other side of life in which many poor people had to struggle for their daily necessities in order to survive. But none of them were aware that a few years later all of them, be they rich or poor, would live in great miseries brought by the Japanese.
What a happy and healthy young people of those days. Sadly our very own country won't (. Not can't ) provide such country we people deserve. Maybe Chinese people don't deserve one. From Hker worldwide
