Thanks Sam again for this interesting episode. Yes, very local and traditional Chinese dishes, especially the curry mutton which, only the elderly chefs from the northern parts of China migrated to Hong-Kong can do it. In the popular hotels and famous restaurants in Hong-Kong, perhaps they may have these dishes in the manual, but, the price will be totally different and the taste maybe not that REAL; because 80% of the food cost will be generated into paying the estate lease, rental, staff salaries etc..... All in all, thanks for your informative presentations and explanations thereof.
Thank you Johnson for your thoughtful comment as always! The history behind this curry mutton food culture is fascinating, and you make a great point about the differentiation in price at different kinds of restaurants in Hong Kong- the difference can be HUGE!
It's not uncommon for people there to dine out most of the time, partly due to the long hours that people work and the easy availability of eateries everywhere in HK.
@@ceciliac2225 Open kitchen (often has a built-in washer/dryer) with a mosquito flat of 300 square feet or sometimes even below 200 square feet would be only large enough for one cooking element, half-size fridge and everything on the tiny side. There is no incentive to cook after a long day of work with a tiny flat returning home only to sleep.
@@canicetang8837 I have to say HK architects are very creative, manage to design 200-300 sq. ft. into self contained living quarters. These units (capsules) are sold for gazillion $.
Hi Sam, lovely to see a passionate gwei-lo recommending Hong Kong local food, love all your videos, and thanks a lot for your passion for introducing all the local treats and you don’t need to spend a fortune to enjoy Hong Kong food. Tell you what I am a local and your videos do introduce me to many local places I have never been. Thanks for all the hard work and looking forward to many more videos from you!!
Thanks for watching and your kind words, much appreciated! Very glad we can introduce even Hongkongers to local places they may not have yet been. More videos coming soon!
as a hongkonger, i pass by the street market many times but didnt try the restaurant upstairs! Will definitely give it a try after this video! love your vibe and video!
Oh boy that curry looked really really good. A full-bodied, multi-layered flavorful sauce. Was wondering if the roast goose may have tasted even better had you had that first and then the robust flavored mutton curry as second dish......But it's all good. Thx for this video.
Greetings from Oamaru Sth island New Zealand. Fatty browned cubed lamb or mutton with curry and potato with a little ginger casseroled is amazing. Casserole till potato starts to break up.😋
Assalamualaykum, I knew you was going to make a video on this place soon! Wai kee is literally my go to place in Hong Kong, the duck with curry & rice + cream soda hits different 😮💨😂
Sam is back! If I were to visit hk for 1 week (maybe 2 depends on vacation sch), what would be the top 3 places for some hk-culture food? Kept seeing hot pot and tea house popping up on my YT feed.
Hi headfakez, thanks for watching! Hmmm good question. There are so many good places in HK, but a good start would be a dim sum place (check out our sim sum video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-71YsrUd4aWE.html but Lin Heung is now closed), a dai pai dong (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IAkVd2oJZ_0.html) and a good cha chaan teng (Check out Cheung Hing in Happy Valley, which we covered here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rjHs4-F_aeE.html)
@@HongKongHoods thank you Sam! those dai pai dong looks like a cool place to start. Hoping to get to hk towards the end of the year. Looking forward to your next video!
Thank you Sam for introducing us to Bowrington area. Will visit there for sure next time! Great videos about HK food, love you posting the prices of the dishes too.
Hi Sam. Coincidentally I came across another food logging Hong Kong based channel today by "ichang". The couple ate the same dishes and spoke to the owner. He said his grandfather store was outside the wet market. Perhaps you guys collaborate in the future. I wonder a scenario where different bloggers appear on scene at the same time does it become a spaghetti western eat off. Any, great videos just patiently await for the next one.
Yes, before they moved into the current cooked food centre, they operated as 大排檔 dai pai dong (sidewalk snack booth) at 陳東里 Chan Tong Ln just outside the cooked food centre.
Hi Iann, sorry for the delay replying to this one, had family in HK last 2 weeks so it's been a little bit hectic! Thank you so much for this, that's such great info and kind of you to share. I've also checked out Ichang. I they're in Hong Kong, I may reach out to them for a collab - and yes, a spaghetti eat off sounds epic!
Thank you Robbie for this information and sorry for the delay replying! This makes me so happy to know... if only I had a time machine to experience Wai Kee when it was in its 大排檔 stage...
Hi Sam, been watching your videos since Japan Travel! Miss your content from Japan but I also love your HK content because I have family there! Thanks for your awesome videos! Just an idea, any thoughts of doing videos in Macau?
Hi there, thanks for watching, and glad you're enjoying the channel! Macau is an excellent idea now the borders are open again. Definitely something we may explore for future videos. Thanks for the suggestion!
As long as it's not pork or pork based or cooked in lard most Hong Kong Muslims aren't that bothered, although I wonder if the halal meat stall in the TST market sells halal meats?
My husband and I returned home after 3 years abroad. We loved eating out. We stayed for 2 months and had different meals almost everyday. The Bowrington mutton curry is my husband’s favourite. Can’t wait to return to HK again soon. Hong Kong is a wonderful walking city. So much to see, so much to eat, and such so much to do.. the city, the walking trails, the islands, not forgetting the shopping!
Thanks for sharing, I think your husband has excellent taste and I hope you get to revisit some of your favourite spots when you return to Hong Kong. It certainly is a great walking city, with so much to eat and do!
Sam, its great to see your video again introducing this popular cooked food centre. For those who really wish to try out Wai Kee‘s signature dishes, order the curry lamb and roast duck without rice and complement them with a large bottle of Blue Girl lager beer 🍺 🤗
I would suggest to drink one of those beers that are made more locally like Huizhou (Carlsberg, San Miguel, Heineken, ...) & not Blue Girl that is imported from Korea.
Thank you Sam again for another great video of Hong Kong. Haven't seen much of your videos so hoping you will be posting more as HK rules have now relaxed so will be visiting soon 😊
Bowrington Cooked Food Centre, HK. I googled it and on the results page look on the right side and a quick run down of the place along with map. Click map and zoom out. It's in Causeway Bay. Hope this helps.
Both this video and the food covered were surprising. Look forward to more such surprises in the future. Hong Kong is so much more than what it looks like from the outside. Thank you Sam and team. Keep up the good work.
you should find somewhere else to taste Lamb Belly with Bean Curd Sheet in Claypot (枝竹羊腩煲). It taste much better in mutton curry in term of cooking style
Hi, as a local I find a lot of other countries' food that are in HK but got influenced by HK culture and altered to fit HKer's tongue. It might be a good idea to make a video on cuisines that originated from other countries that are influenced by HK. Such as "HK style chili" which is a rich, slightly spicy chili mixed with either chicken, Sirloin, fried fish or pork chop with rice.
Some family friends took me to a place next to the wet market in Kowloon city which was packed and was/is a Muslim restaurant serving mutton curry. One of the best I’ve ever had. Also have lamb and beef grilled patties which were my favourite. Don’t know the name but might be a branch? Most people coming from China would have based themselves in Kowloon city first. Having googled it, not the same people. This is a halal restaurant but mainstay of beef. It’s on 33-35 tak ku ling road.
Hi Cho, thanks for watching and commenting! Would this restaurant happen to be Islam Food? We've covered it in our Kowloon City video. Ceck it out here and let us know if this is the place you visited!: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8abORIePuTw.html
@@HongKongHoods Hi Sam. It could possibly be Islam food. I remember the stools outside. Don’t remember inside being so big but it was a few years ago. Definitely remember the beef patties which are amazing! My mum has friends who own a small chain of bakeries a bit further away from centre. Can’t remember the name but they have some of the best baked buns. Most of the ones you get in the chains like maxims etc aren’t a patch on theirs! I’ll tell you the name when I find out
Hi Sam. Really love your videos and the indepth history to them. You seem to cover pretty much everything (certainly the most popular).....except one where it's just in passing like the duck rice here and the Hainan Chicken Rice. But the Cantonese roast rice (or noodle soup) is (or at least was) a very big thing in Hong Kong. Roast Duck/Goose Rice, Roast Belly Pork Rice, Char Sui Rice, Hainan (White Chopped) Chicken Rice, Braised (Soy) Rice. Suckling Pig Rice. And their noodle equivalents. Suckling Pig and Roast Goose seen as a cut above Belly Pork and Roast Duck. They come with 1/2 a salted egg, ginger/spring onion oil, a token gesture of a Chinese leaf vegetable to add colour contrast rather than to be healthy. I would say, at least during my time there, it would be one of the top 3 in terms of foods (second only to Dim Sum/Yum Chaa and maybe breakfast noodle soup varieties (fish balls/beef brisket) and congee with fried ghost. I don't think you've covered this except in passing? Why is that?
Thanks for watching and welcome to the channel, really glad you're enjoying our videos! Also thanks for explaining about the different meats and their status among Hongkongers. I love all the meats, and will definitely look to do more episodes involving the different kinds of roast meats, and congee and breakfast soups in the future... with so much great food around, we just haven't gotten around to them yet!
Great video. Hope you’re ok, you look as if you’ve lost some weight! Returning to HK in October after a 4 year absence. Will definitely try some places you’ve featured on your videos.
Hi Kent, thanks for watching, and yes, doing great, the weight loss is healthy- mostly through jogging! Glad you enjoyed the video, and I’m sure you’ll love your trip here in October, an energy has certainly returned to the city!
I am happy that you love the local food , and I believe that the food culture in HK is very charming although you may not know how to speak and read Chinese😊 By the local Hong Kong citizen
Hey! I didn't see a single ethnic muslim person in your video! LOL I wonder how this places dish compares to the well known epic curry mutton restaurant in Kowloon City.
Thanks for watching! There were people of different ethnicities in there, I guess our shots didn’t capture that! If you’re talking about Islam Food in KC, the mutton curry compares well. Different taste to the food as Islam Food mutton curry is slightly thicker I’d say from memory, but both are stellar and fine examples of Islam cuisine in the city!
惠記very famous on the Goose and curry Lamb. How can he know this local restaurant? He shouldn’t order the goose with rice only the goose. He ex-chef opened a restaurant besides him
Thanks Gordon! We found this restaurant the same way we always do, by keeping our ear to the ground and doing lots of research! That’s a good tip on the roasted goose, certainly could have done without the rice with that- window for next time. Hope you’re enjoying our channel!
Hey, thanks for watching and the kind words! I’m from Manchester, England. Hope you’re enjoying living in HK, and that you find the vids helpful and inspiring!
Next time tell your other countries friend of the good news is from March 1st in HK is no longer mask mandate and next time other countries people come to HK after March 1st, 2023 no need to wewr your own mask allowed to come into HK without mask is okay no more mask laws and no more pay fine and jail from March 1st no need to wesr mask no more penalty and jail.
I agree that in sticking just to Hong Kong Island, you'll miss out on so much great food in other parts of Hong Kong - but there are also some great spots on the Island!
As you know already Eastern China(Xinjang province) is home to Uyghur Muslims. Is there a community of them in Hong kong at all? especially given that this place served Halal food?.
That's a great question, and I'm really not sure about the Uyghur community in Hong Kong... it would be great to know the size of the population here in HK!
To British people watching: do you find places in Hong Kong British? To me as a Hongkonger many public buildings built in the 70-80s looks like those in London!
I grew up in between the U.S and U.K in a mixed Muslim/Christian household, I'm not personally religious at all however with that being said I'm incredibly respectful of what both sides of my family where raised with. though. I eat pork but my Dad doesn't though despite not being a remotely religious person, that's just how he was raised.
Thanks for sharing about your family's mixed heritage! That sounds incredibly culturally rich, and I'm sure it has shaped you. Pork is delicious, but likewise, we respect the choices of those that choose not to eat it. I guess restaurants like this provide a great place where people from many walks of life can converge and enjoy delicious food!
@@HongKongHoods My Dad doesn't mind cooking it though because he's lived in the west for a very long time now, I for one basically grew up on it and still do occasionally eat it, delicious it certainly can be! diversity is a beautiful thing, luckily where I am in the east end of London you get people from all over.
Not sure to be honest Julian, we filmed before it got hot in Hong Kong, so wasn't paying too much attention. A brilliant local gem regardless though- definitely recommend!
Thank you for your sharing Hong Kong’s food and everything 👍🏻😊👍🏻 I feel very familiar and warm as I watch your video.Especially I am in overseas now. Support you and your sharing 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hey Sam, a link from your japanguide 3 day road trip in Kyushu video redirected me here. I returned recently from our trip there and just wanted to say a big thank you for that marvelous video. I have to say I was extremely excited from watching your guide before getting to go, and very happy to say the trip was as great as you presented it to be in the video, the likes of Beppu, Yufuin, and Kurokawa Onsen. Happy to see you continue killing it here, now in my hometown of HK. Cheers to you!
Hi Victor, that's awesome that you found me through the japan-guide videos, they bring back such good memories of my years living in Japan! Hope you enjoyed your time in Kyushu and glad the video helped- it's such a marvellous place! Also thanks for the kind words about this channel, really happy you're enjoying it!
Just order a curry lamb with rice and a single roast duck leg. Then you won't be wasting an extra dish of rice. Happy eating, this place is really a gem in the city.
Hi Sam, I'm coming down to Hong Kong for a much needed visit. I've been there numerous times in the past but this will be the first time that I will visit HK on a specialised diet (for health purposes). I hope you can feature restaurants or food joints in HK that offer low-carb/ketogenic diet food staples. I know it's a bit of a tall order since HK/Chinese cuisine is high in carbohydrates (rice, the siu mai, pork buns, etc.). Cheers!
Hi and thanks for watching, hope you enjoy your trip here! Yes, you’re right, unfortunately a lot of Chinese food is high in carbs, so that might be difficult for this channel! Will bear it in mind incase we come across any places such as this though!
Great video ! The store owner was present in the video wearing the cap with the blue mask on ! His grandfather opened this restaurant back in the 1930s as a street stall on the ground level near the same area to serve the Muslim community that would visit the nearby mosque before they moved the store to the market when it opened in the late 1970s !
Thank you for that, it's so interesting to know these things! I wish I could go back in time and see it as it once was! And yes, the guy in the cap was the owner's son. I was lucky enough to speak to him a little bit, but he didn't want to talk on camera, unfortunately.
@@HongKongHoods honest, most of your awesome clips are "down-to-earth" and relevant to HK. just reminds me of my wonderful childhood days on the streets of HK 😝😝😝 I will always ❤HK.
